As a seasoned movie critic with a deep appreciation for the stage, I can’t help but be thrilled by the return of Imelda Staunton to the London theatre scene in the beloved musical “Hello, Dolly.” With a career that spans over four decades and numerous accolades under her belt, including four Laurence Olivier Awards and a Golden Globe nomination, Staunton is a force to be reckoned with.
Imelda Staunton is well-recognized for her roles in Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix as Dolores Umbridge, or in the last two seasons of The Crown where she portrays Queen Elizabeth II. Her acting in The Crown’s fifth season even gained her a nomination for the Best Actress Award at the Golden Globes.
But, did you know Staunton began her career on the stage?
An BAFTA-honored actress kicked off her acting journey in 1976 with repertory theater. Since then, she’s graced the stages with diverse roles in plays like “Wizard of Oz” and “Uncle Vanya,” as well as musical productions such as “Guys and Dolls.”
Staunton has received four Laurence Olivier Awards: three for Best Actress, which she earned for her musical roles in Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, and Gypsy, and one for Best Supporting Performance, acknowledging her work in A Chorus of Disapproval and The Corn Is Green. She’s also been an impressive nominee a total of 13 times.
Currently, Staunton is back on stage in the musical “Hello, Dolly” which had its premiere at the London Palladium this month.
In this production of “Hello, Dolly,” the 67-year-old actress will be working once again with director Dominic Cooke, whom she previously collaborated with on the successful revival of “Follies.” Alongside Staunton, the cast includes Jenna Russell, a multiple Olivier Award winner, Andy Nyman, famed for his play “Ghost Stories,” and Tyrone Huntley, who gained recognition for his portrayal of Judas in “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

What is the Broadway musical Hello, Dolly about?
Hello, Dolly can be traced back to 1938 with Thornton Wilder’s The Merchant of Yonkers. This farce inspired the 1964 Hello, Dolly musical which was performed on Broadway.
In my experience, one of the most memorable adaptations of “Hello, Dolly” was the 1969 movie version, featuring Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthau in the lead roles. This film was truly a sensation, bagging an impressive three Academy Awards, such as for Best Score in a Musical Picture. Furthermore, it was deservingly nominated in no less than four other Academy Award categories, including the coveted Best Picture category.
In the musical, Dolly Levi, a meddlesome socialite, sets out from New York City to arrange a marriage for millionaire Horace Vandergelder in Yonkers. Yet, her plans shift when she decides that her next assignment will be finding a husband for herself.
How long is Hello, Dolly in London for?
Hello, Dolly will be at The London Palladium Saturday 6th July to Saturday 14th September 2024.
As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the London Palladium, a Grade II listed West End theatre, is conveniently located on Argyll Street in the heart of Soho. With its central location, getting there via public transport is a breeze. Hop off at Oxford Circus station if you’re using the Bakerloo, Central, or Victoria lines, or Bond Street station for the Elizabeth, Central, and Jubilee lines. The ease of access to these transportation hubs makes this iconic theatre an ideal destination for any film lover’s adventure in London.
