Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

As a film and TV critic with a background in Spanish language and culture, I have had the pleasure of discovering some truly exceptional shows that have not only captivated global audiences but also pushed boundaries in their respective genres. One such series that stands out to me is Money Heist, or La Casa de Papel as it’s known in its native Spain.

I’m thoroughly enjoying the superhero drama Supacell, which has been dominating the Netflix rankings and sparking conversations among viewers. It’s not hard to see why.

The series combines thrilling storylines found in Marvel and DC universes, while giving significant attention to sickle cell disease and highlighting the experiences of Black residents from South London.

Among all the shows debuted on the streaming platform in early July, the series has gained the highest viewership, outpacing hits such as Bridgerton’s third season and Vikings: Valhalla.

In other parts of the top 10 on streaming platforms, Netflix consistently demonstrates the success of its acquisitions through viewer favoritism, with the newest addition, “Honor,” taking the leading position.

I had the opportunity to watch a heart-wrenching two-part movie recently, featuring the talented Keeley Hawes in the lead role. This film is based on a true story that left me in shock and disbelief. Banaz Mahmod was the victim of an unspeakable crime, brutally taken from us in what is referred to as an “honour killing.” The horrifying truth unfolds as we learn that this heinous act was orchestrated by none other than her own father and uncle.

netflix now offers the chance to watch the ITV drama online, sparking more discussions about the authentic incidents and making the genuine tale more accessible to numerous new audiences.

With a wealth of entertaining options available, you won’t run out of things to watch on the streaming platform between shows like Bridgerton and Rick and Morty, along with new sensations such as Eric, Big Boys, and Kin. And don’t forget about the latest original productions, including Baby Reindeer, 3 Body Problem, and Ripley, which have all received Emmy nominations for this year.

You have an abundance of options on Netflix, making it understandable if you find yourself unsure of which show or movie to watch next. Allow us to help guide you through the selection.

As a movie enthusiast, I’d like to add that if you believe there’s a must-watch film missing from our list, please feel free to share it with us on Twitter @RadioTimes. Enjoy your streaming experience!

Honour

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Netflix has shown for a long time that they offer not only an abundance of original content but also bring to light shows that might have been overlooked by some. This 2020 drama, which sparked intense emotional conversations when it first aired on ITV, is now accessible on Netflix. As a result, a larger audience is likely to be moved by the heart-wrenching events depicted in the series.

In just two short episodes, the series “Honour” doesn’t offer a lengthy viewing experience like many others. However, these two episodes pack a powerful emotional punch as they recount the events leading up to Banaz Mahmod’s murder and the subsequent pursuit of justice for her killers. Keeley Hawes and Rhianne Barreto give mesmerizing performances as DCI Caroline Goode and Banaz’s elder sister Bekhal Mahmod, respectively. The series sheds essential light on honor-based abuse through its compelling narrative.

Supacell

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

In this intriguing superhero story created by Rapman and featuring Tosin Cole, the lives of five seemingly disparate Black residents from South London unexpectedly intertwine as they inexplicably gain superpowers. As Cole’s character, Michael, discovers he can harness these abilities, he becomes convinced that uniting this diverse quintet is the key to saving his fiancée’s life after being mysteriously transported into the future on their engagement night.

Some viewers might be growing tired of the superhero genre, but Supacell offers a refreshing take by presenting a distinctive story and tackling themes of race and power in an original way. The production feels authentic and relevant to its time and location. – Paraphrased by me

Outnumbered

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

As a huge fan of Outnumbered, I’m thrilled to hear that the BBC sitcom is coming back with a one-off special this holiday season. If you’re like me and want to get in the mood, now might be the ideal time to revisit all five seasons, which are conveniently streaming on Netflix.

Andi Hamilton and Guy Jenkin’s show introduces us to the Brockman clan as their kids develop through various stages of life. The main cast includes Hugh Dennis, Claire Skinner, Tyger Drew-Honey, Daniel Roche, and Ramona Marquez. This production is notably distinguished for its innovative acting technique: the two youngest siblings adlibbed their lines, while the elder ones relied on scripts.

As a long-time fan of sitcoms, I can wholeheartedly agree with James Hibbs’ assessment. Growing up, I’ve watched many shows that tried to follow the lives of families or children as they grew older, but few managed to maintain their comedic charm and relatability like this consistently funny sitcom does.

In simple terms, this six-part documentary series provides an in-depth look at the minds of world-class sprinters, showcasing their mental fortitude that allows them to dedicate their lives to professional sprinting. The first season includes athletes such as Sha’Carri Richardson, Noah Lyles, Shericka Jackson, and Zharnel Hughes, among others.

The documentary series is an excellent lead-up to this summer’s Olympics, igniting viewers’ interest in athletics on a global scale. It offers a more comprehensive perspective on the sport than typically shown. Like most Netflix documentaries, the production quality is top-notch. However, it may not delve as deeply into the athletes’ minds as some audiences anticipate.

Rick and Morty

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

In simple terms, the seventh series of Rick and Morty is now available on Netflix. This installation introduces new voice actors for the main characters, which is a casting choice that may spark debates among fans.

Despite taking a break, the science fiction series returns with more thrilling journeys, witty humor, and profound dilemmas. New surprises await viewers in this latest installment, yet the program remains true to its signature blend of chaos and comfort that keeps audiences engaged. – Paraphrased version by AI.

Bridgerton

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Before the end of 2020, Netflix wasn’t known for producing great period dramas. But all that changed during the holiday lockdown when everyone was seeking joy. On Christmas Day, Santa Claus magically dropped a fantastic series onto Netflix for us to enjoy with our boxes of Quality Street chocolates. Based on Julia Quinn’s beloved books, Bridgerton follows the romantic journeys of eight siblings living in fashionable Regency London.

In the beginning, Daphne, portrayed by Phoebe Dynevor, went up against her equal in the form of the Duke of Hastings, Regé-Jean Page’s captivating character. Later on in season 2, the storyline centered around Anthony Bridgerton and his budding romance with Kate Sharma, a fresh addition to the series.

Currently, the attention shifts to the developing romance between Nicola Coughlan’s character Penelope, a friend, and Bridgerton’s Colin (Luke Newton), who is a son. Although their storyline does not grab our interest as quickly as before, it remains an engaging watch.

You definitely shouldn’t miss out on tuning in to discover more about Penelope’s double role as Lady Whistledown, as this mysterious figure continues to cause trouble for Colin in the new season. With its entertaining plot, stunning costumes, captivating performances, and contemporary music, this series is an delightful escape from reality – and has been a huge hit among viewers. – Emma Bullimore/Morgan Cormack

Big Boys

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

I’m thrilled to share that I recently discovered this delightful, humorous, and emotionally resonant sitcom created by Jack Rooke. Not only has it recently been added to Netflix, but Channel 4 has also greenlit a third season! This presents an ideal opportunity for those who haven’t yet had the chance to experience it – or for fans like me who want to revisit the joy – to catch up and savor every moment.

Drawing inspiration from Rooke’s personal story and background, the show centers around Dylan Llewellyn’s character, Jack, a 19-year-old introverted young man who begins his university journey while still mourning the death of his father. At Brent Uni, he encounters Danny, played by Jon Pointing, a 25-year-old student with a rough exterior but hidden mental health struggles. Their bond quickly strengthens, and the series explores the highs and lows of their university experience.

The series is filled with exceptional acting, particularly by Llewellyn and Pointing. It has a delightful feel and is overflowing with optimism and affection for its characters.

Despite bringing on more chuckles than outright laughter, it’s still an enjoyable watch. With thought-provoking messages hidden within and a lovable cast of characters, investing time in this will be worthwhile.

Scavengers Reign

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

In its initial stage, this adult animated show debuted on Max, an American streaming platform. Later, it shifted to Netflix, aiming for a renewal for a second season. The narrative revolves around the remaining team members of a spaceship that experienced a crash landing on an enigmatic and threatening planet. Inhabited by harmful and peculiar extraterrestrial beings.

As a longtime fan of science fiction and fantasy shows, I can confidently say that the world building in Scavengers Reign has left me utterly captivated. Having watched countless series over the years, I’ve come to appreciate the intricacies of well-developed ecosystems, and this show delivers on every level.

The show introduces us to its eclectic band of survivors in a short amount of time, featuring the vocal talents of Wunmi Mosaku (Loki), Sunita Mani (GLOW), Alia Shawkat (Search Party) and others. Prepare to be on the edge of your seat as they navigate one perilous situation after another. The stunning animation and expertly crafted direction make for a visual experience that rivals Hollywood blockbusters.

Sweet Tooth

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

In essence, Sweet Tooth presents a post-apocalyptic scenario where vast areas of humanity have been decimated by an enigmatic plague. Simultaneously, strange occurrences began: children were born with unique animal traits, such as Gus (Christian Convery), who possesses the ears and antlers of a deer.

Children believed to hold the solution for an inexplicable disease on the verge of wiping out humanity face danger from unscrupulous figures intent on exploiting them for nefarious experiments. Accompanied by his guardian, Jepperd (Nonso Anozie), Gus endeavors to maneuver through this perilous landscape and unearth the truth about his past.

As a longtime fan of heartwarming and engaging shows, I can’t help but be thrilled that Sweet Tooth’s third and final season is now streaming on Netflix. Having followed this unique and captivating tale since its inception, I can confidently say that the series has delivered a satisfying conclusion, leaving no stone unturned. And if my excitement isn’t enough to convince you, consider this: Sweet Tooth has amassed an impressive 20 nominations at the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, with the show taking home a total of four awards. Eric

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Right from the start of this show, there are many appealing aspects – it’s colorful, mysterious, fast-moving, and boasts an impressive soundtrack. However, this ’80s-themed series isn’t just about disco and nostalgia. The enigma of missing Edgar soon unfolds, revealing a family’s deepest fears coming to life. This isn’t the kind of show you can casually watch on your phone during quiet moments.

In Edgar’s case, there are numerous hints, misleading leads, and fleeting moments that it’s crucial not to overlook. The story explores complex themes such as corruption, abuse, and racism through this intriguing narrative. Benedict Cumberbatch gives a standout performance as Vincent, Edgar’s father, a character we’re supposed to dislike. As viewers, we find ourselves becoming emotionally invested, yearning for answers, and unable to look away until the very end.

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Many individuals have not yet discovered the treasure trove of Hindi shows on Netflix. If you haven’t explored gems such as Delhi Crime or Jamtara – Sabka Number Ayega, consider giving them a try and adding them to your queue. Heeramandi: The Diamond Market is a captivating fiction that blends the intrigue of those thrilling productions with an account of Lahore’s historic courtesan mansion.

In the backdrop of India’s struggle for freedom, Heeramandi is a story that highlights the efforts of a band of women to be heard and respected in the realms of politics, business, and love. The series is filled with captivating Bollywood-esque performances, heartwarming romances, heartbreaking deaths, and tragedies, ensuring that viewers will find it hard to look away.

Kin

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

The Irish crime drama, which unexpectedly appeared on RTÉ and later BBC One in the UK, captivated audiences with its compelling storyline and impressive cast. Led by Charlie Cox from Daredevil and Aidan Gillen and Ciarán Hinds of Game of Thrones fame, viewers were drawn into the complex power struggles of the Kinsella crime family in Dublin.

As a long-time fan of crime series, I can wholeheartedly appreciate the unique charm of Kin. It may not break new ground or offer anything particularly original or innovative, but that’s not what it sets out to do. Instead, it masterfully tells age-old crime stories in a fresh and engaging way, introducing complex characters that leave us craving to know more about their backstories.

Dead Boy Detectives

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Approximately two years have passed since The Sandman was first introduced, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the second season. To hold us over in the meantime, a fresh series entitled Dead Boy Detectives has emerged, set within the same captivating universe. Inspired by Neil Gaiman’s source comics, this intriguing new show revolves around Charles and George – two teenage specters who operate as earthbound detectives. They tackle enigmatic supernatural cases and assist other spirits in their journeys to the afterlife.

As a longtime fan of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman comic series, I approached this new adaptation with high expectations. Yet, despite some initial reservations, I found myself pleasantly surprised by this unique and captivating show.

Baby Reindeer

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Many people are certain to discuss the seven-part drama that initially seems like a comedy, but upon closer examination, proves to be a heart-wrenching story as we delve into the true experiences of comedian Richard Gadd.

After writing and producing the series based on his experiences as a one-man theater performer, Gadd takes on the role of Donny Dunn, a struggling comedian who earns a living working at a pub.

In this scenario, at that location, he encounters Martha, a woman who appears fragile, and an unusual attachment to him emerges, leading her to stalk him persistently. The incessant contact from Martha creates an unsettling atmosphere, yet it is the profound examination of trauma within the show that leaves a lasting impression – ultimately boosting Gadd’s recognition.

If you’ve seen “I May Destroy You,” you’ll notice some resemblances to that Michaela Coel production. However, in this case, Gadd takes an unblinking look at his own history and mistakes.

Ripley

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

In the past, many adaptations of Patricock Highsmith’s Ripley novels have existed, with the 1999 film “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” featuring Matt Damon, being the most renowned. Nevertheless, none have remained as true to the original texts or captivating as this recently released Netflix series in black and white, starring Andrew Scott.

I was completely drawn in by Scott’s chilling and enigmatic portrayal of Tom Ripley, a master con artist, as he insidiously infiltrates Johnny Flynn’s character, Dickie Greenleaf’s, life in the 1960s. This show is a brilliant blend of tension and style, boasting stunning visuals and exceptional performances that leave you on the edge of your seat. The plot twists and turns in unpredictable ways, keeping you guessing and eliciting more than a few surprised gasps from me as I watched each episode unfold.

3 Body Problem

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

As a long-time fan of both David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’s groundbreaking work on Game of Thrones, and Alexander Woo’s contribution to True Blood, I have eagerly anticipated their latest project, 3 Body Problem, since the announcement in 2020. Having grown up immersed in science fiction literature, especially Liu Cixin’s novel of the same name, I can only imagine the depth and complexity this series will bring to life on screen.

Over eight episodes, a team of five scientists join forces with a detective as they face an unexplained phenomenon causing nature’s laws to falter. What endangers Earth, and can they prevent humanity’s downfall? This polished new series, filled with recognizable actors, is poised to captivate sci-fi enthusiasts and leave audiences pondering if there are future seasons in store. – Morgan Cormack

The Gentlemen

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

In the newest production by Guy Ritchie, rural estates, poultry costumes, and marijuana intermingle. This latest project of Ritchie’s harks back to its initial television conception, which was envisioned before its 2020 cinematic debut. The eight-episode series introduces us to Eddie Horniman (Theo James), an unexpected inheritor of his father’s vast country manor, which turns out to be a thriving marijuana farm.

In my experience, things become significantly more complex when some menacing individuals set their sights on the project I’m involved in. This pushes Eddie deeper into the criminal underworld than he ever intended to be. Starring familiar faces such as Vinnie Jones, Ray Winstone, Max Beesley, and Joely Richardson, this series is hard to resist binge-watching. – A concerned follower

One Day

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

As a movie buff, I can tell you from my personal experience that a series like “One Day” is bound to spark diverse opinions among viewers. However, if you’re in the mood for a heartfelt and poetic romantic tale, this new drama is definitely worth your time and attention. With its 14-episode runtime, it may seem like a significant investment, but trust me, it’s essential to fully explore the two-decade journey of Emma (Ambika Mod) and Dexter (Leo Woodall)’s lives.

The connection between these characters on screen might falter occasionally, but One Day still manages to hook you with the age-old theme of “the right person, wrong time.” From attending their graduation ball together to becoming significant figures in each other’s lives, get ready to reach for a tissue during the later episodes and be moved by Woodall’s powerful (and heartfelt) acting.

Deadwater Fell

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

David Tennant, recognized by some as the charming ex-Doctor in Doctor Who and Crowley in Good Omens, displays another side of his acting range in Deadwater Fell. In this production, he portrays the complex character of Tom Kendrick, a beloved GP.

Tom is well-respected among the close-knit community of their picturesque village, with everyone admiring him as a devoted family man. However, this image is shattered when his wife and three children tragically perish in a house fire. Suspicion falls upon Tom as neighbours begin to suspect arson. But did he truly commit this heinous act? In an emotionally charged performance, Tennant raises thought-provoking questions that linger long after viewing. The cast also features Cush Jumbo, Laurie Brett, and Matthew McNulty.

Chimp Empire

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

If you believe you’ve watched every type of nature documentary format, prepare to be surprised. Chimp Empire, a four-part series narrated by Mahershala Ali, is a must-see. Directed by James Reed, known for “My Octopus Teacher,” this production uncovers the largest chimpanzee community found in Uganda’s Ngogo Forest.

In my experience as a movie reviewer, this series spans a year and delivers just as much intrigue and power struggles as an episode of Succession. Witness the fierce competitions for dominance, the formation of alliances, and the sparking of new rivalries. Each chimp brings their unique personality and character to life in a way that is not only crisp and comprehensible but also incredibly engaging and thrilling.

Friday Night Dinner

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

As a movie lover, I’m thrilled to share that since this Channel 4 sitcom came back on Netflix earlier this year, it has been rapidly gaining popularity and climbing up the charts. And it’s no surprise why! This delightful and quirky show, where a British Jewish family gathers for dinner every Friday night, is truly one of the best comedies to come out of Channel 4. With its offbeat humor and endearing characters, it never fails to make me laugh.

I’m blown away by the superb performances of Tamsin Greig, Simon Bird, and Tom Rosenthal in their roles as the Goodman matriarch and her feuding sons. Among them, Paul Ritter’s portrayal of the eccentric father Martin truly stands out – it’s nothing short of phenomenal. There are rumors of an American adaptation, but I believe the original still has a lot to offer audiences, and I hope it continues to thrive for a long time.

Beef

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

In simple terms, this comedy-drama series is produced by A24, a well-known film company known for its high-quality productions. You can trust them to deliver an engaging experience. The show features Steven Yeun and Ali Wong in the main roles. It explores the consequences of a road rage altercation between Danny and Amy, which has the potential to severely impact their lives.

The show skillfully combines humor and seriousness, using witty banter to contrast the story’s grim undertones. At its core, it explores the importance of sharing emotions and connecting with others, rather than keeping them bottled up inside – a profoundly existential theme. With exceptional lead performances, it effectively conveys this powerful message.

If you have doubts, know that “Beef” triumphed at the 2024 Golden Globes, with Yeun and Wong receiving accolades for their outstanding performances in this winning limited series. – Paraphrased by me

The Crown

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Certainly, the line separating reality and imagination may have grown more blurred in its final stages, yet who wouldn’t be captivated by peeking into the secretive world of this globally renowned dynasty?

Claire Foy and Matt Smith brilliantly brought to life the challenging partnership between a young Elizabeth and Philip, requiring them to endure the strains of responsibility and scrutiny from the public. Meanwhile, Vanessa Kirby enchanted audiences with her intricate portrayal of Princess Margaret.

Over the passing years, I’ve had the privilege of watching Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham Carter spearhead an exciting new phase in the monarchy story. With captivating performances from Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin, we delved deeper into the complexities of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s tumultuous marriage. In its final seasons, Imelda Staunton masterfully stepped into the lead role, while Dominic West, Elizabeth Debicki, and Jonathan Pryce were just a few of the brilliant actors who graced us with their presence in pivotal roles.

With an impressive number of award nominations that left the producers in awe, this groundbreaking show became a pivotal moment for Netflix. It bestowed prestige, recognition, and attracted a vast, new viewership. These curious viewers, enticed by the allure of The Crown, took their first steps into the streaming service realm.

Squid Game

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

if you haven’t watched the worldwide phenomenon “Squid Game” yet, get ready for an exhilarating, violent, and thought-provoking experience. This groundbreaking South Korean show focuses on a group of deeply in debt people who are offered a life-changing opportunity: to compete in games that are reminiscent of popular childhood pastimes, with a grand prize of 45.6 billion won at stake.

Although the large cash reward might make the games seem effortless, they are in fact quite challenging and result in the unfortunate demise of many losing participants.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming conversations surrounding the second season of Squid Game now that its spin-off reality series has been released. The first season of this groundbreaking show has undeniably left an indelible mark on streaming history, becoming one of the biggest hits for the platform. And it’s no wonder – Squid Game is a masterpiece of television that delivers in every aspect. It boasts exceptional acting, impeccable writing, and brilliant direction. Plus, it offers a thought-provoking critique of the ruthless competition that permeates our capitalist society.

Even those without an interest in social commentary can still find enjoyment, as the show offers plenty of heart-pounding survival scenes. The impact of these sequences is heightened due to the series’ strong focus on developing compelling characters, making it easier for viewers to become invested in the contestants’ journeys.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Despite favorable critiques from audiences and critics, Edgar Wright’s 2010 film adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World underperformed at the box office, leading many to believe that we had seen the end of his unique interpretation of this beloved series of graphic novels.

Over the past ten years, the film’s popularity has significantly increased, along with the rising fame of its stars: Chris Evans (Captain America), Aubrey Plaza (The White Lotus), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), and Kieran Culkin (Succession). Recognizing this resurgence in interest, Netflix decided it was the perfect moment for a revival.

In this animated version of the story, Michael Cera (from “Barbie”), who is known for being a slacker, takes on the challenge of dating the mysterious Ramona Flowers ( portrayed by Mary Elizabeth Winstead from “Ahsoka”). To have a chance with her, Scott Pilgrim must defeat each of Ramona’s seven exes. The creator of the original film, Edgar Wright, returns as executive producer to ensure a more accurate adaptation. The animation style mirrors Bryan Lee O’Malley’s unique illustrations and includes tributes to various pop culture influences.

In our five-star review, we’re thrilled to share that the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off adaptation doesn’t diminish the beloved film or original content, instead enhancing it. The series is a must-watch, bursting with visually stunning scenes that will undoubtedly leave you amazed. – David Craig

Friends

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Friendswas the revolutionary sitcom of the ’90s and early 2000s, spawning countless imitators. With its unmatched cast and their exceptional chemistry, each member perfectly fit their role, making it impossible to pick a favorite. The success of Friends was truly electrifying.

Although some people might argue that the show lost steam towards the finish line, in reality, its quality remained consistent. The series continued to be amusing and heartfelt from start to finish, even if certain elements now seem outdated. Nevertheless, it addresses universal themes and portrays a stage of life that will resonate with countless viewers.

For several years, Friends has been a highly sought-after streaming show with massive popularity. Recently, HBO Max invested nearly half a billion dollars to secure its exclusive broadcasting rights in the US. Lately, the sitcom has experienced an unexpected surge in interest due to the sad passing of Matthew Perry.

The way James Hibbs or David Craig portrayed Chandler Bing in comedy is a legend that will endure in history.

Taskmaster

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

During the ongoing broadcast of this comedy competition series on Channel 4 (previously known as Dave), fans have the opportunity to watch the first 13 seasons on Netflix at their leisure. In this program, Greg Davies and his assistant Alex Horne challenge five famous individuals with tasks that range from mildly ridiculous to completely unusual.

I’ve had the pleasure of watching “A Bit of Fry and Laurie” for quite some time now, and I must say, it’s a truly addictive and endlessly renewable format. With an impressive 16 seasons under its belt, it’s clear that this show isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Lupin

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Prepare for more intriguing escapades from Assane (Omar Sy) in the upcoming third instalment of Lupin. Fans have been eagerly waiting for this moment to discover what becomes of our clever and elusive hero, who went into hiding at the conclusion of season 2.

In the final episode of season 2, Assane accomplished much, yet he’s not received warmly in Paris as he’s become a top fugitive target in France. He successfully put Hubert Pellegrini under arrest and exonerated Babakar’s name; however, his return to Paris is complicated by the need to mend relationships within his family.

Once again, there will be surprises, unsavory antagonists, and we can merely cross our fingers for Assane’s safety. – Paraphrased by me.

Sex Education

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

For Sex Education enthusiasts, there’s both exciting and disappointing news. The show is back on, bringing essential messages, spot-on humor, and authentic portrayals of sexual experiences. However, this season marks its last.

As a big fan of Sex Education, I’m excited yet sad to hear that the fourth season might be its last. But based on Morgan Cormack’s description, it seems that this final farewell won’t disappoint us with its lack of twists, character development, or emotional goodbyes.

Top Boy

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

As a passionate cinephile, I’ve been captivated by the intriguing journey of creating crime drama “Top Boy.” It first graced our screens for two seasons on Channel 4 back in 2011 and 2013. But unfortunately, it seemed like its storytelling days had come to an end when the broadcaster decided to put it on hold in 2014. That is until Netflix entered the scene a few years later, driven largely by the enthusiasm of Canadian rapper Drake. Now, I’m thrilled that all five seasons of this gripping series are readily available for streaming on Netflix.

Ashley Walters and Kane Robinson play the roles of Dushane Hill and Sully Sullivan in this crime drama series set on the Summerhouse Estate. In the last season, the drug bosses are compelled to face the destructive consequences of their actions. The show masterfully combines heartfelt personal narratives with larger story arcs. Don’t miss out on the thrilling and climactic final episodes.

One Piece

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

As an avid fan of Eiichiro Oda’s record-breaking manga series from Japan, I’m thrilled to announce that a highly anticipated live-action adaptation is now in production.

One possibility: The story centers around Monkey D Luffy, played by Iñaki Godoy, and his band of pirates on a thrilling voyage across the sea in search of the coveted “One Piece” treasure, which will bestow upon Luffy the esteemed title of Pirate King.

Can the legendary One Piece be discovered? Absolutely, with the assistance of teammates Nami (Emily Rudd), Mackenyu Arata (Zoro), and Jacob Romero Gibson (Usopp) by his side, the captivating character will keep his fingers crossed in anticipation.

Heartstopper

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

In simple terms, this LGBTQ+ television series has touched the emotions of audiences worldwide as it chronicles the journey of two schoolboys, Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) and Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), from friendship to romance during an important school year. Unlike other high school shows with their focus on drugs, sex, and melancholy such as Euphoria, this program opts for a more lighthearted approach, appealing to viewers of all ages through its adorable moments rather than high-stakes drama.

In the second season, the story explores deeper themes as our characters deal with various challenges at home and struggle with mental health issues among other hardships. Our Heartstopper season 2 critique reveals a more assured and intricate series in the newer episodes, which may even win over those who were doubtful after the first.

As a passionate viewer who’s always on the lookout for heartwarming and engaging series, I can’t help but recommend “Heartstopper” to anyone who asks. With its brisk 25-minute runtime, this show is perfect for those of us who can’t get enough of a good thing. And if you’re like me, a hopeless romantic, then you most likely will be hooked.

The Witcher

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

In the third season of “The Witcher,” which premiered on Netflix in 2023 and marked Henry Cavill’s final portrayal of Geralt of Rivia, the mutant monster-hunter’s journeys with sorceress Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and Cintra’s Princess Ciri (Freya Allen) continued. As conflict engulfed their fantastical realm.

Packed full of unusual creatures, rapid-fire action sequences, and a colorful cast of characters, it’s no wonder that The Witcher has become one of Netflix’s most successful series. This intriguing show, inspired by the same collection of novels as the earlier Witcher video game, has undoubtedly brought joy to its creators as well. In fact, sales of The Witcher 3 game experienced a significant surge of 558% after the release of the Henry Cavill-led adaptation.

In Season 3, Cavill concluded his tenure as the primary character, paving the way for Liam Hemsworth’s entrance in Season 4. This transition makes it an ideal moment to explore The Witcher series; at the very least, you’ll find yourself humming a catchy new tune. – Huw Fullerton

Black Mirror

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

After a four-year hiatus, Black Mirror came back for its sixth season in 2023. Instead of continuing with tech-centric tales like before, the new episodes explored historical settings and included an exceptional “Red Mirror” episode that didn’t rely on technology at all.

While James Hibbs’ original text effectively conveys his thoughts on the themes of “Black Mirror,”

Narcos

If you’ve already binge-watched “The Last of Us” and “The Mandalorian” featuring Pedro Pascal and are still craving more, consider revisiting one of his earlier works that helped establish his fame.

After the conclusion of Breaking Bad, Narcos made its entrance on the scene, needing to set itself apart. It achieved this with great success by presenting a partially factual account. You

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

At the close of 2018, you captivated the globe with the debut of your psychological thriller on Netflix. Viewers have been unable to look away since then. The series, which started in New York City, introduced us to Joe Goldberg (portrayed by Penn Badgley), a character who is both unsettling and somewhat endearing, as he became increasingly infatuated with Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail).

Over a span of ten episodes, his craving evolved into an unhealthy obsession that left us cringing in discomfort. The Netflix show manages to elicit chuckles at times, but as the narrative takes a darker turn, so does the growing unease of the audience; it’s a type of series best avoided before bedtime for those with sensitive nerves.

In seasons 2 and 3, Joe resided in California, facing competition and partnership from Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti). However, the structure changed in season 4 with Joe assuming a new identity in London and socializing with elites, including Charlotte Ritchie portraying a frosty art gallery curator.

Wednesday

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

In today’s TV landscape filled with reboots, remakes, and revivals, it was just a question of time before the Addams Family received a modern update from Netflix. Fortunately, this new take brought on board Tim Burton, the mastermind behind gothic whimsy, to helm the coming-of-age horror-comedy series “Wednesday.” The talented Jenna Ortega was brilliantly cast as the title character, Wednesday Addams, who gets sent to Nevermore Academy after accidently releasing piranhas on Pugsley’s bullies.

On Wednesdays first day at the supernatural school, she showed indifference. However, her apathy turned into involvement when a murderous creature emerged and she employed her psychic talents to investigate, clearing her parents, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez Addams (Luis Guzmán), of any suspicion regarding the crime committed at the school.

Although this eight-episode series occasionally veers into overly dramatized teenage storylines, akin to those degraded by shows like Riverdale, its striking visuals, consistent mood, and Ortega’s captivating acting make this a visually appealing and engaging spectacle. – Paraphrased by me (AI)

The Sandman

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Fans have been eagerly anticipating this screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s beloved comic book series for three decades. Despite some delays along the way, the end result was well worth the wait. According to our own glowing review, it’s a masterpiece that could only have been imagined by Dream himself.

In this intricate storyline, a god-like being responsible for crafting dreams faces a perilous journey to various distinct realms and chronologies. This voyage is driven by an urgent need to rectify the chaos caused by his prolonged imprisonment – a captivity lasting over a century. Throughout his quest, he comes across diverse beings and challenges, resulting in an enchanting yet frequently somber narrative. — Paraphrased version by me.

Better Call Saul

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Initially, when Better Call Saul was unveiled, there was reasonable skepticism among the audience. After all, prequels don’t have the best track record, and following such an exceptional series as Breaking Bad seemed like a daunting task.

Of course, the solution involved finding its own ground while respecting the past and bringing some of the most intricately developed TV characters of the decade to life. Bob Odenkirk delivered a brilliant performance as Slippin’ Jimmy McGill, a character whose transformation from being so different from the seedy Saul Goodman leaves you feeling for him despite knowing his future metamorphosis.

As a long-time fan of slow-burn series, I must admit that this year’s finale was nothing short of exhilarating. While I had grown accustomed to the legal maneuvers and intricacies that defined the earlier seasons, the shift towards all-out mob warfare took me by surprise. And what a surprise it was!

Stranger Things

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

In the late 1980s setting, the sci-fi drama “Upside Down” produced by Netflix as an original series gained significant popularity. It captivated audiences worldwide, generating buzz and earning the title of a cultural phenomenon due to the intriguing occurrences in Hawkins, Indiana.

The meme culture surrounding this show sometimes overshadows its ability to be heartwarming, amusing, and frightening all at once. With its charming young characters, intimidating creatures, and hilarious moments from the start, Stranger Things continues to deliver in its second, third, and fourth seasons.

Initially, Stranger Things centered around the danger of a solitary monster crossing over from another realm, confronting a telekinetic adolescent girl named Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). However, as the show progressed, it expanded to encompass telepathic Mind-Flayers, romantic entanglements, adolescence, fashion, loss, and malicious Russians – not forgetting an emotionally stirring performance of Never Ending Story in season 3’s finale.

Mindhunter

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

David Fincher’s impressive two-season run of the psychological thriller series left a significant impact. In this time, “Mindhunter” featured Jonathan Groff as FBI agent Holden Ford, who collaborated with his partner Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) and psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv). Their mission was to interview serial killers in depth, gaining insights into their thought processes to prevent future atrocities.

The show is quite dark and mysterious, yet manages to maintain a witty tone. Performances by Groff, McCallany, and Torv are exceptional. Fincher has hinted that the series may be concluded for now, but let’s keep our fingers crossed that he reconsiders, as this complex thriller is a rare find in today’s television landscape. – James Hibbs

Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest TV series of the 21st century, if not of all time. The storyline begins with an engaging premise and continually gains momentum, culminating in a highly rewarding finale for a long-running show.

Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, and Bob Odenkirk delivered captivating, authentic performances as characters who found themselves in over their heads, whether intentionally or not. Giancarlo Esposito’s portrayal of a villain stood out memorably, earning him roles as a menacing antagonist in popular series like The Boys and The Mandalorian. – Paraphrased version

Peaky Blinders

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

As a seasoned fan of gritty period dramas, I can confidently say that Peaky Blinders sets a new standard for stylish and captivating storytelling. Having grown up in the Midlands during my youth, I’m no stranger to tales of organized crime and the intricacies of family dynamics. Set against the backdrop of Birmingham between the World Wars, this series takes us on an enthralling journey through the exploits of the Shelby crime family, led by none other than the enigmatic Tommy Shelby, brilliantly portrayed by Cillian Murphy. Having returned from the trenches with a steely determination, Tommy seizes control of Birmingham and expands his criminal empire beyond its borders. With each episode, I’m left breathless as I immerse myself in this thrilling world of family, power, and survival. The attention to detail in the writing, acting, and production value is truly exceptional, making Peaky Blinders a must-watch for any fan of gripping dramas.

Steven Knight, the writer of the show, constructed a tale encompassing themes such as gang conflicts, social and political ideologies, poverty, brutality, unity, socio-economic classes, family, and Tommy Shelby’s relentless pursuit to surpass his adversaries. However, despite his advancements, the haunting memories continue to chase him.

The Last Kingdom

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

For lovers of Game of Thrones, The Last Kingdom offers an engaging and historically grounded alternative. Featuring intense action and drama, this series draws inspiration from authentic British history. In the lead role is Alexander Dreymon (known for American Horror Story), portraying Uhtred of Bebbanburg – a brave warrior born to a Saxon nobleman, but brought up amongst Danish invaders. With these two vastly different worlds colliding, Uhtred finds himself in a precarious position, compelled to pick a side as England’s war unfolds.

In simpler terms, Dreymon stands out as the captivating lead of the series, as his mischievous character embarks on numerous intriguing journeys in an attempt to regain the land that belongs to him. David Dawson (Year of the Rabbit) garnered praise for his role as King Alfred, a religious monarch who is both an ally and adversary to Uhtred at different points in their lives. The intricate relationship between these two characters adds depth and tension to the first three seasons.

Using Bernard Cornwell’s well-known novels as inspiration, The Last Kingdom initially aired as a BBC Two production before transitioning into a Netflix original series. Despite not having the substantial budget of Game of Thrones by George RR Martin, The Last Kingdom has still managed to execute grand battles throughout its five seasons – filled with swords, horses, and, unavoidably, blood. – David Craig (Paraphrased)

Ozark

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

In the hit series “Ozark,” the story centers around Marty Byrde, played by Jason Bateman, and his family’s struggles after aligning with a Mexican drug cartel. The most recent season saw Marty and Wendy in a race against time to prevent Ruth, who had suffered a great loss, from seeking retaliation against cartel leader Javi. With the odds stacked against them, could this be the end of their tenuous alliance?

As a devoted film enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement for the latest addition to Netflix’s lineup – Ozark season 4. This gripping series has me on the edge of my seat as I watch the Byrde family navigate through precarious situations where one false move could lead to their downfall. The suspense is palpable, leaving me eagerly anticipating each new episode. And let me tell you, the acting chops displayed by Bateman and Linney are nothing short of exceptional. If you’re in search of a thrilling ride filled with top-notch performances, I wholeheartedly recommend checking out Ozark season 4 on Netflix.

Midnight Mass

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

In contrast to Mike Flanagan’s previous shows on the streaming platform, Midnight Mass isn’t adapted from any horror literature. Instead, it’s an entirely new creation, with elements drawn from Flanagan’s own background as a former altar boy in the Catholic Church.

On Crockett Island, a secluded community, the peaceful routine is disrupted by the arrival of two intriguing newcomers. Among them is Father Paul, an engaging yet enigmatic clergyman who steps in as temporary replacement for the long-standing Monsignor John Pruitt. As Father Paul performs what seem to be miracles, the residents’ faith is challenged – some are doubtful, questioning the true intentions of this new priest.

Midnight Mass is an exciting, thought-provoking, and uniquely chilling new series. It delivers plenty of jumps scares, stimulating debates, and a few scenes that will be etched in the minds of viewers long after the credits roll. – Patrick Cremona

Money Heist

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Heist thrillers must strike a delicate balance between realistic and engaging robbery plots, and “Money Heist” generally achieves this by presenting two intricate heists orchestrated by the mysterious criminal mastermind, The Professor. He assembles an eclectic team of robbers named after cities to pull off daring heists in Madrid’s financial institutions while taking hostages. However, errors, emotional complications, and unpredictable relationships among the robbers, hostages, and law enforcement lead to unexpected twists, creating a race against time for all parties involved to outsmart each other before the situation escalates further.

At first, Money Heist was considered a flop when it debuted on Spanish television and received minimal marketing upon being added to Netflix. However, this show managed to captivate audiences around the world, drawing new fans into the intrigue of The Professor’s elaborate heists and his gang wearing Dali masks. An infectious tune even took over European music charts. Amazed by its success, Netflix commissioned three more seasons, with the concluding chapters released in two parts – the last one in December 2021.

In this crime thriller called “Money Heist,” the traditional heist genre is given a fresh twist with a feminine perspective, a Spanish cultural influence, and an intricately woven plot. The focus shifts from just the heist itself to the multidimensional characters and their connections. However, excess love triangles occasionally bring the storyline closer to daytime soap operas – at its peak, this show is a clever, groundbreaking, and thoroughly engrossing production that has rightfully earned its place among the most-watched non-English language TV shows globally.

The Queen’s Gambit

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Chess may not be considered an exciting spectator sport by many, and a limited series based on this game might seem unlikely to generate significant buzz. However, Scott Frank’s “The Queen’s Gambit,” which premiered on Netflix in 2020, defied expectations and became a massive word-of-mouth hit.

According to Walter Tevis’ novel, the story unfolds around Beth Harmon, a gifted orphaned chess player who faces continual battles with addiction as she ascends to the game’s pinnacle. Anya Taylor-Joy delivers an exceptional small-screen portrayal in her role, while Marielle Heller, Harry Melling, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster provide outstanding supporting performances.

As I sat down to watch this magnificent series, I was immediately captivated by the richly textured sets and meticulously researched historical details. The chess match scenes were staged with such skill and grandeur that I felt like I was right there in the thick of it. And the intricate plot kept me hooked for all seven episodes, leaving me eager for more. If you’re a fan of period dramas or just looking for an engaging watch, this series is not to be missed.

Over the course of six captivating seasons, this animated program featuring a horse with an alcohol problem stood out among many TV productions. It masterfully combined hilarious moments with heavy, thought-provoking themes, achieving a seamless balance that left viewers in awe and deeply moved.

Best series to watch on Netflix right now – updated (July 2024)

Orange Is the New Black stands out as one of Netflix’s most popular and longest-running original series. Created by Jenji Kohan, this groundbreaking show has gained acclaim for tackling complex human stories and boasting an exceptional ensemble cast. The story revolves around Taylor Schilling’s character, Piper Chapman – a 30-something woman who receives a 15-month sentence for transporting drugs. As she adjusts to life in Litchfield Penitentiary, she encounters a diverse group of inmates, each with intriguing and personal backstories.

As I watched the seven seasons of Orange Is the New Black unfold, I found myself deeply invested in the alliances that formed, only to be tested and sometimes broken at their core. Piper was always at the center of the action, drawing me in with her complex character development. The series tackled some heavy topics, making me laugh, cry, and feel the pain of corruption, prison privatization, racial discrimination, and sexism. In short, Orange Is the New Black is more than just must-see TV – it’s a crucial part of any viewing experience. – Helen Daly
