As a dedicated fan of Cobra Kai, I can’t contain my excitement for the return of this action-packed series on Netflix! The sixth season is here, and it promises to be bigger and better than ever before. After the dramatic events of season 5 that left us with the downfall of one villain and the rise of another, I’m eager to see where the story goes next.
Retreat into the chaotic realm of rigorous martial arts dojos, erratic senseis, and unscheduled karate fights breaking out in various public areas as Netflix’s Cobra Kai kicks off its sixth season.
The last installment of this series is divided into three sections. The initial segment has been released, marking nearly two years since the fifth season concluded dramatically with the fall of one antagonist and the emergence of another.
Last year, the Hollywood production industry came to a grinding halt due to strikes initiated by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG). Contrastingly, the prior seasons had only taken a brief hiatus of nine to twelve months.
If you’d like a quick reminder of the essential Cobra Kai facts before starting season 6 part 1, then check out this summary instead.
Warning: spoilers for Cobra Kai season 5.
Miguel found his dad
At the most recent All Valley Tournament, Miguel’s back injury acted up, causing him to leave the event in a dramatic exit. He found no motivation from Johnny’s persistent urging for him to continue competing.
For a long time, he regarded his master as a paternal figure. Already, he felt disheartened by the thought that he would forever be in Robby’s shadow.
He swiftly traveled to Mexico with the objective of locating his biological father, an achievement that’s quite impressive given Mexico’s vast expanse.
Unfortunately, despite Hector Salazar’s deceptive appearance of being kind and caring at first, it eventually emerges that he is indeed the harmful criminal Miguel’s mother had frequently cautioned him about.
Instead, Miguel decided to end any deeper connection with him, finding relief as Johnny and Robby returned from their road trip having found the missing student.
Miguel and Robby made up (kind of)
For Miguel and Robby, the Mexico trip marked the beginning of healing their strained relationship. Their feud reached new heights when Miguel was brutally pushed off a tall building ledge by Robby, resulting in Miguel’s lengthy incapacitation.
After trying various methods to help the boys resolve their issues through enjoyable and non-violent means, such as creating a homemade escape room, Johnny realized that they might need to have one final physical confrontation in order to fully release their shared anger.
In the fictional world of Cobra Kai, this meditation method is effective, as evidenced by Miguel and Robby forming a tenuous friendship despite it not being commonly suggested in real life.
But there are more challenges to come in season 6…
The dojos enter the Sekai Taikai
International Sekai Taikai representatives explored the San Fernando Valley in search of suitable dojos to join their renowned tournament. Cobra Kai, now under the malevolent guidance of Terry Silver, and Miyagi-Do, headed by Daniel and Johnny, presented distinct training styles, creating intense competition.
In the end, the judges recognized valid points in both methods and awarded positions to the feuding organizations. This is an important plotline that will carry on through season 6, so remember to pay attention as you watch.
Silver eyes world domination (seriously)
In the fifth season of Cobra Kai, Terry Silver reaches a new low as he deceitfully accuses his ex-friend and partner, John Kreese, of attempted murder in order to seize complete power over their martial arts dojo.
The way this man teaches karate leaves some people concerned, as it seems to transform children into overly aggressive mini martial artists. He intends to expand his influence beyond the San Fernando Valley.
I’m privileged to be part of Silver’s ambitious vision as he outlines his strategy for growing Cobra Kai into a global network of dojos. This expansion will not only broaden our reach but also grant us a formidable force of dedicated trainees from various corners of the world.
Children would face continuous apprehension if they didn’t join Cobra Kai (implying potential harm, such as having their heads forced into a toilet).
Kreese dies (but not really)
In season 5, John Kreese was falsely accused and imprisoned for a severe assault that occurred, with his ex-student Stingray pointing the finger at him. However, it was actually Terry Silver who had instigated the attack and even bribed Stingray to support his deceit.
During a short meeting, Johnny and Daniel deceived Kreese with unkept promises, intensifying the animosity among them. Yet, for Kreese, there was a faint ray of optimism emerging.
Tory Nichols regularly visited her sensei in prison, maintaining faith in his intellectual prowess and training techniques. However, she distanced herself from him following Johnny and Daniel’s act of deceit.
Later on, it seemed that Kreese met a gruesome death by being viciously stabbed in the prison cafeteria. However, it was later uncovered that this was actually a clever ploy enabling him to flee from prison.
As someone who has spent years following the world of martial arts, I’ve seen it all – from dedicated practitioners pushing themselves to the limit for self-improvement, to unsavory characters manipulating the system for their own gain. In this particular case, I was shocked and dismayed to learn that both Silver and Stingray had been involved in a scandalous scheme to deceive the public and manipulate the outcome of competitions.
Everyone’s happy (but for how long?)
Cobra Kai season 5 ends on a generally positive note, in terms of the core personal relationships.
Miguel and Robby have made up with their partners Samantha and Tory once again. Their friendships with Samantha and Tory are strong once more. Similarly, Johnny and Daniel seem to have resolved their long-standing disagreement.
With Kreese still on the loose and the World Karate Tournament approaching, our band of quirky karate underdogs will face numerous challenges ahead. Don’t miss out on the action in season 6 part 1 to discover what happens next!
