One Piece Producer Talks Dr. Kureha Casting

As a dedicated fan of One Piece, I was thrilled when rumors swirled about Jamie Lee Curtis joining the live-action adaptation as Dr. Kureha. Her passion for the series and our shared excitement made it seem like a perfect fit. Alas, executive producer Becky Clements recently dashed my hopes when she revealed scheduling conflicts prevented Curtis from taking on the role.

Fans of “One Piece” have longed for Jamie Lee Curtis to join the anime series, and the “Halloween” actress herself has expressed her interest. With Netflix’s live-action adaptation gaining popularity and leading to a second season, many believed that Curtis was a strong contender for the role of Dr. Kureha, the healer on Drum Island. In a recent interview, executive producer Becky Clements provided an update on Curtis’ potential involvement and hinted at the current progress in casting the Drum Island doctor.

Jamie Lee Curtis, who was set to play Kureha in Netflix’s live-action Straw Hat Pirates, unfortunately couldn’t take on the role due to conflicting production schedules. Despite her enthusiasm for the project, she has numerous films and TV shows in the works that clash with our production timeline. She deeply regretted not being able to be a part of it but had prior commitments that took precedence.

Who Will Be Kureha?

Fans may feel let down as Curtis is no longer under consideration for the part, but Clements suggested cryptically that Kureha’s actor has already been chosen. Regarding the live-action anime doctor, Becky announced, “We’ve discovered a fantastic individual for the role.”

Clements not only discussed Kureha but also revealed plans for the show to last for six more seasons during conversations about “One Piece” future developments. When inquired about the future of the Straw Hat Pirates, Clements expressed assurance, stating, “We have our ideas. Matt Owens holds them in his mind, we just need our collaborators who’ve been fantastic to be on board with continuing, but creatively, we are ready.”

Clements further explored the responsibilities of showrunners Matt Owens and Joe Tracz, who have been working closely together on the One Piece live-action project. Eiichiro Oda, the series creator, has once again been actively engaged in the production process this season. Both teams share a strong vision for the series, making their collaboration effective and productive.
