As a long-time fan of Doctor Who, I have grown accustomed to the many twists and turns that come with this beloved series. However, Jodie Whittaker‘s departure as the Thirteenth Doctor left me feeling a bit disappointed, especially regarding the lack of resolution between her character and Yaz’s unrequited feelings.
Jodie Whittaker, who previously starred in “Doctor Who” as the Thirteenth Doctor, is discussing the controversial ending to her tenure, focusing on the absence of a romantic relationship between her character and companion Yaz, portrayed by Mandip Gill. With both actors set to return for Big Finish’s forthcoming “Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures,” it’s important to address the fans’ anticipation of a romantic connection in the final episode, “The Power of the Doctor.” Unfortunately, that episode did not meet their expectations.
After Yaz revealed her emotions to the Doctor during “Legend of the Sea Devils” in Doctor Who, the Doctor did not respond in kind during “The Power of the Doctor.” Some viewers were disappointed by this turn of events, but Whittaker and Gill are guarding the Doctor’s last moments for their own sake.

As a devoted fan, I can relate to Whittaker’s feelings when she described shooting her last Doctor Who episode. The experience was incredibly special for me too. The scenes inside the TARDIS were particularly moving, capturing the essence of our final day together. We filmed those first and then climbed on top of the TARDIS for a heartfelt farewell. Following that, we shot in isolation the regeneration moment. Though these sequences don’t follow each other chronologically in the storyline, the way we filmed it created a beautiful progression between our characters and their relationship.
Whittaker playfully remarked, “There are still more stories of the Doctor and Yaz waiting to be shared.” She added with a smile, “Who knows, we might even end up sharing a kiss on an adventure!”

In the Big Finish’s “Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures,” Whittaker discussed her character’s comeback. She mentioned that these audio productions put a greater emphasis on thrilling experiences rather than romantic entanglements.
Whittaker describes these stories as focusing more on the adventure of each episode than the Doctor and Yaz’s relationship. It’s like following these characters on their journeys, observing their interaction and camaraderie. They also exhibit a mutual protective instinct towards one another. However, their dynamic may have deeper layers that we haven’t discovered yet. So, there could be an episode revealing more about their bond.
Mandip added, “We have the luxury of time to discover new things, but for now let’s focus on this current experience.”
Whittaker and Gill’s televised Doctor Who adventures are streaming now on Max in the United States. Big Finish Productions plans to release Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures in July 2025. The series is available to pre-order on the Big Finish website.
