Twisters: Movie Fans Are Angry About One Missing Detail

As a long-time film enthusiast and avid gamer, I’ve seen my fair share of romantic endings in movies. But none have left me as perplexed and disappointed as the ending of “Twisters.” Now, before you accuse me of being old-fashioned or out of touch, let me clarify that I’m all for progressive storytelling and subverting expectations. However, when it comes to a film that so blatantly sets up a romantic relationship between its two leads, only to deny its audience the satisfaction of a kiss at the end, it’s hard not to feel shortchanged.

The movie “Twisters” has made its debut in cinemas and is currently drawing rave reviews from both critics and viewers. The opening day box office collections surpassed expectations, and on Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts a remarkable 78% approval rating among critics and an astounding 92% score from the audience. Critic Charlie Ridgely from ComicBook awarded it a well-deserved 4 out of 5 stars, praising it as a nostalgic revival of our beloved blockbusters. However, despite the widespread appreciation for the film, one issue has sparked debate on social media: the lack of a kiss between Glen Powell’s character Tyler and Daisy Edgar-Jones’ Kate in their otherwise blossoming romance. (Spoiler alert: potential spoilers for “Twisters” ahead)

The film “Twisters” hints at a romantic connection between Tyler and Kate, as indicated by several scenes and the movie’s conclusion where Tyler pursues her at an airport, a classic romantic trope. Nevertheless, despite the build-up, they do not share a kiss during the tornado warning. Some viewers found this to be playful, while others felt disappointed, expressing their disappointment on Twitter about the absence of a significant romantic scene in “Twisters.”

If you prefer to work with 35mm film for your photography projects, it would be fitting if a kissing scene was mandatory, as suggested by Brian Duffield in a humorous tone. Alternatively, if you fail to do so, there might be consequences, albeit extreme ones like being jailed, as he sarcastically implied. Abolishcxps lamented about the lack of romantic moments in today’s movies, reminiscing about iconic kissing scenes at the end of classic films like Twisters.

“@bccbecca wrote: I enjoyed Twisters up until that point, but the lack of a final kiss was disappointing.” @TomiLaffly remarked: “The excellent job done on Twisters could have been enhanced with just one grand romantic kiss in the end. It’s a missed opportunity for added impact.”

Surprise: Director Lee Isaac Chung filmed a kissing scene between Powell and Edgar-Jones, but it ended up being removed from the final cut. A clip of this scene has recently resurfaced on Twitter and can be viewed here.

At the end of the “Twisters” movie screening, @doinkpatrol playfully declared to the audience that the scene featuring Glen and Daisy’s kiss had been omitted. Angered fans have gathered, and according to @sydglenx, they’ve taken matters into their own hands by occupying the AMC theater. In a passionate plea, @beforekermit urged, “Give us back the original cut by Lee Isaac Chung!”

Why Was the Twisters Kiss Cut?

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the film’s creators discussed the absence of kissing scenes in Twisters.

“I find it a bit disappointing that they didn’t opt for using it. Perhaps it’s due to my skills, I’m not sure.” (Maintaining a light-hearted tone)

Chung expressed that the public’s preferences regarding on-screen kisses have shifted. He attempted to include one in his work, but the response was deeply divided – this wasn’t due to how well the kiss was executed.

Chung shared an alternative take from that day which he found more appealing. He believed it concluded the scene effectively and left room for viewers’ imagination regarding a potential kiss between the characters. By doing so, they could preserve a sense of privacy and celebrate the story’s conclusion in a fitting manner.

Edgar-Jones remarked, “It was enjoyable and rejuvenating not to conclude with the predictable cliche of two equally enamored individuals, matching in love, intellect, and comprehension of the elements.”

“According to Chung, if the story concludes with a kiss, it may give the impression that Kate’s entire journey was just about getting that kiss. However, it would be more satisfying for her character to have the ability to continue her actions with a smile at the end.”

In simpler terms, although Chung’s perspective is valid, it’s important to acknowledge that Twisters is primarily a romance movie with a predictable happy ending. It’s natural for audiences to anticipate a heartfelt kiss after the intense experience of watching the film. To illustrate this further, consider Twister (1996), which combined disaster and romance elements. In the climax, Helen Hunt’s character, Jo, and Bill Paxton’s character, Bill, shared an emotional kiss just moments after surviving a colossal tornado. This kiss did not detract from Jo’s triumph in any way. Ultimately, we believe that women are empowered to battle tornadoes as well as share romantic moments with attractive partners.

The kissless Twisters is now playing in theaters.
