As a devoted Star Wars fan with years of immersion into the expansive galaxy far, far away, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and appreciation for the recent discussions surrounding the unique portrayal of lightsaber “bleeding” in The Acolyte. However, it is essential to acknowledge that this concept was not only explored in the latest Disney+ series but also made its debut in an unexpected way through Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, a game released last year by Respawn Entertainment.
This article contains spoilers for The Acolyte and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
In the final episode of Star Wars’ newest live-action series on Disney+, The Acolyte, there’s much to explore and discuss, even if you haven’t watched it yet. With some distance from its premiere, it’s safe to say that conversations abound regarding this intriguing show. One point of contention that has emerged frequently is the portrayal of a lightsaber’s power source – the Kyber crystal – and how it transforms from a brilliant blue hue to an ominous red.
In more simplified terms, fans of Star Wars have been intrigued by the idea of lightsaber bleeding since Ahsoka, a book by E.K. Johnston, was published in 2016. This concept was further depicted visually for the first time in Marvel comics issue Darth Vader #5, released in 2017. However, it’s essential to note that an instance of lightsaber bleeding has previously been shown on screen, but only in video games.
Star Wars: Jedi Survivor marked its one-year anniversary in April, with Respawn Entertainment being the first to introduce this storyline on screens. In the game, Cal Kestis stumbles upon a hidden Jedi from the High Republic era trapped in a bacta tank and saves him. However, instead of expressing gratitude, the rescued Jedi succumbs to the hatred and anger that had built up over the centuries after being abandoned by the Jedi Order.
In simpler terms, Dagan Gera (played by Cody Fern), a character in The Acolyte, is the one who makes Star Wars fans witness the unique spectacle of a lightsaber crystal bleeding. If you’re eager to explore this phenomenon further outside of The Acolyte, there are more opportunities coming your way. What sets Dagan apart from Osha is that he deliberately and consciously bleeds the crystal himself, defying the Jedi Order that abandoned him. These distinct scenes raise questions about how Star Wars might employ this process in future stories and reveal new ways a Force user’s lightsaber could glow scarlet.
Mostly, I just couldn’t let Dagan Gera be erased.
