As a long-time fan of Coronation Street, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and sadness as I read about the departures of yet another group of beloved characters from the show. Having watched these stories unfold for decades, it’s hard not to form an emotional connection with the residents of Weatherfield.
Keeping up with the constantly changing plotlines and characters in Coronation Street’s drama-filled world can be quite a challenge.
In the year 2024, events unfold with great intensity as mysteriously, Lauren goes missing, and Paul Foreman’s battle against Motor Neurone Disease persists.

LEAVING
Paul Foreman (Peter Ash)
When is Paul Foreman leaving? Summer 2024.
As a devoted cinema-goer, I’d put it this way: Later in the year, I’ll sadly bid farewell to Paul Foreman from Coronation Street. His character will be stricken with a heartrending diagnosis – Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
The soap in collaboration with the MND Association is delving into how Paul and his family are coping with his worsening Motor Neuron Disease condition in an upcoming storyline.
MND, or Motor Neuron Disease, is a severe condition that causes the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to deteriorate at an alarming rate. These nerves are responsible for transmitting signals that enable movement, leading to muscles losing their functionality. Sadly, this debilitating illness can also impair patients’ senses, including vision, hearing, and touch.
Actor Peter Ash expressed that Paul was taken aback by the diagnosis and chose to conceal it from his loved ones while he processed the information personally.
Before starting to write about Motor Neuron Disease (MND), I had limited knowledge on the subject. I’m deeply thankful to the MND Association for their guidance and assistance throughout this process. Actors taking on roles that explore real-life issues carry a significant responsibility. We’re mindful that some viewers may be personally dealing with this condition in reality, making it all the more crucial that we handle the subject matter sensitively and accurately.
Consciousness and knowledge are crucial. In just a brief period, I’ve gained so much insight from being part of this narrative. It’s our hope that Paul’s experience sheds light on the symptoms and the daily challenges of living with Motor Neuron Disease for others.
The character will therefore die when the storyline concludes.
Rowan Cunliffe (Emrhys Cooper)
When is Rowan Cunliffe leaving? 2024.
The Institute’s storyline may be approaching its conclusion, possibly signifying Emrhys Cooper’s departure from his position as Rowan Cunliffe.
The tabloid The Mirror reveals that Rowan’s character will exit the story before it reaches its conclusion, as depicted on screen.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve come to realize that Rowan’s character had a predetermined expiration date in the storyline, which advanced the plot.
So, how will the villainous Rowan depart?
Gail Rodwell (Helen Worth)
When is Gail Rodwell leaving? Late 2024.
After an impressive 50-year run, “Coronation Street” veteran Helen Worth is bidding farewell to her iconic character, Gail Rodwell.
I’ve spent half a century acting on the street, but I’ve chosen to say goodbye and leave the show. My departure will be marked by an significant storyline that impacts the Platt family.
Next month, Helen will begin shooting her farewell narrative for the films, with the moving segments set to be released towards the end of the year.
Helen expressed that this year seemed ideal for her to bid farewell to the show, having spent an incredible 50 years in what she cherished as the best job and location. She made up her mind at the beginning of the year and shared her decision with the producers, who were supportive and considerate in their response.
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to receive exceptional scripts regularly and to collaborate with talented actors, skilled directors, and an excellent production team.
It’s hard to believe that five decades have passed so quickly, and I haven’t fully grasped the idea of departing just yet.
Iain Macleod, the Executive Producer, remarked: “The terms ‘legend’ and ‘icon’ are frequently employed nowadays, but they truly fit Gail and Helen Worth. Although Helen is modest, I can assure you she won’t mind my saying this! For fifty years, Helen has skillfully portrayed Gail in Coronation Street, keeping her at the heart of some of the most impactful storylines. Many of these were born from Gail’s unfortunate knack for selecting unlucky husbands.”
“I’ve got to tell you, Gail has provided us with endless enjoyment through her work. But let’s not forget that Helen is an absolute pro and a truly lovely person off-screen. The entire team behind the scenes will feel her absence as much as the viewers will miss seeing her on their screens. We wish Helen all our best for her future endeavors.”
RETURNING
Martin Platt (Sean Wilson)
When is Martin Platt returning? Later in 2024.
According to reports, Sean Wilson will once again take on the character of Martin Platt for the departure plotline of his ex-wife Gail Rodwell, which is expected to unfold towards the end of this year.
According to The Sun’s latest update, Gail’s reunion with Martin is said to be temporary. This romantic turn of events may bring Gail a satisfying conclusion and the stability of her relationship with arguably her most consistent husband. ITV has not yet commented on the rumors regarding Martin’s return.
Martin was a regular character on the soap opera from 1985 to 2005, with occasional visits to see his son David Platt up until 2018.
We wonder what David will make of Martin’s comeback and reunion with his mum!
