Marvel's Kevin Feige Teases the MCU's "Mutant Era"

As a long-time Marvel fan and avid gamer, I can hardly contain my excitement for what’s coming next to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The MCU has been evolving at an incredible pace with the Infinity Saga and Multiverse Saga, but now, Kevin Feige has dropped another bombshell – the Mutant Saga.

As a dedicated gamer and avid Marvel fan, I’ve been eagerly following the latest developments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With Kevin Feige at the helm, Marvel Studios has been dropping intriguing hints since Comic-Con in 2019. Following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, mutants and other beloved characters like the Fantastic Four became part of the MCU family.

As a long-time fan of Marvel Comics, I’m beyond excited about the upcoming collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine, hitting theaters on July 26th. This isn’t just another addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but rather the beginning of a new era. With an R rating, this Phase 5 installment marks a bold move for the studio, following in the footsteps of the grittier and more mature tone set by the R-rated Blade reboot on the horizon.

In simpler terms, Feige explained during a press conference (as reported by The Playlist), “Now that we have X-Men characters, or mutants, previously unseen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the movies following Deadpool and Wolverine will mark the start of the Mutant era in our universe.”

Marvel Studios has recruited Michael Lesslie, the writer behind “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” to draft the script for their upcoming unannounced X-Men reboot. This project is yet to be officially declared by Marvel Studios, but there’s a strong possibility it may be announced during their panel at SDCC 2024 this week. When the X-Men eventually join the MCU in live-action form – which might be in a rumored “Avengers vs. X-Men” film – they will introduce a diverse roster of characters drawn from various X-Men universes.

Feige explained to io9 that at Marvel, they frequently use the expression, “an abundance of choices.” In the Deadpool & Wolverine film, as well as all the Fox X-Men productions, there are numerous beloved X-Men characters. Moreover, there are many iconic X-Men characters yet to be introduced on the big screen. Therefore, we can anticipate a blend of familiar faces and newcomers when it comes to the X-Men cast. Alongside Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, this ensemble could feature Patrick Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier (recently seen in Doctor Strange 2) and Kelsey Grammer’s Beast (introduced in The Marvels).

Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine is in theaters July 26th.
