As a devoted fan of House of the Dragon, I have been absolutely captivated by the latest developments in Rhaenyra Targaryen’s quest to secure her victory against the Greens. In episode 6 of season 2, we witnessed a heart-stopping moment as Ser Steffon Darklyn, one of Rhaenyra’s trusted Queensguard and a loyal knight from House Darklyn, attempted to claim Seasmoke, the dragon believed to be riderless.

In House of the Dragon’s second season, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) discovers a method to secure victory against the Greens, yet the route to achieving this is challenging – locating riders for the dragonless dragons residing in Dragonstone.
In the newest installment of the show, Ser Steffon Darklyn, a member of Rhaenyra’s Queensguard, makes a daring move to seize Seasmoke, the dragon that once belonged to her late husband Laenor Velaryon (played by John Macmillan). Laenor had abandoned Rhaenyra in season 1 and is assumed dead by many now.
While the plan looks to have worked at first, things go badly wrong.
Let’s clarify the identity of Ser Steffon Darklyn and the reason behind Rhaenyra’s selection of him to seize Seasmoke for us.
Who is Ser Steffon Darklyn in House of the Dragon?
As a devoted cinematic enthusiast, I can share that I held a significant position within the royal court. Specifically, I served as Steffon Darklyn, the personal commander of Queen Rhaenyra’s esteemed Queensguard. Hailing from the influential House Darklyn, which governed Duskendale with pride and tradition, my loyalty to both my queen and my noble lineage remained unwavering.
Previously, he had been part of King Viserys’s (Paddy Considine) Kingsguard. But as the Dance of Dragons broke out, he left King’s Landing and joined forces with Rhaenyra at Dragonstone.
When Rhaenyra sought riders for the dragons at Dragonstone, Steffon was among the first to volunteer. However, his claim on Seasmoke, the dragon, was disputed, and he met a violent end when the beast breathed fire and killed him in an gruesome turn of events.
Why did Rhaenyra choose Ser Steffon Darklyn to claim Seasmoke?
Rhaenyra hoped for a highborn rider for Seasmoke, reasoning that Ser Steffon had the best claim.
Of course, he was also loyal to her, so she didn’t need to fear a dragon rider turning against her.
During episode 6, it was revealed that there are other contenders for the dragons besides the characters we have seen so far. Among them are Addam and Alyn, the half-brothers of Corlys Velaryon, played by Steve Toussaint.
At the close of the episode, it seems that Addam has taken control of Seasmoke, the dragon once used by his half-brother, Laenor.
Who plays Ser Steffon Darklyn in House of the Dragon?
In simpler terms, Anthony Flanagan, famous for his part as Tony in the Channel 4 sitcom “Shameless,” portrays Ser Steffon Darklyn.
Yet, he boasts an impressive resume spanning both television and cinema, starting with a role on Holby City back in 2002.
In addition, I’ve appeared in several other notable roles throughout the years. For instance, I played Pete Bond in Life on Mars (2006), Kenny Archer in Cracker (2006), Craig Fletcher in Spooks, Fergus in Being Human, and Ewan Ross in Shetland. This equates to a rich and diverse acting portfolio.
Lately, Flanagan has taken on new roles including Thomas Kneedling in “Around the World in 80 Days” and Ben and Sam Snowden in “Gentleman Jack.”
He has made appearances in House of the Dragon starting from the second episode of season 1, and his role became particularly significant in episode 6 of season 2.
