What happened in Deadpool 2? Full recap before Deadpool & Wolverine

As a huge fan of the Deadpool franchise, I can’t help but marvel at the extraordinary journey Ryan Reynolds’ character, Wade Wilson, has taken us on since his debut in Deadpool 2. With the long-awaited threequel, Deadpool & Wolverine, just around the corner, it’s a perfect time for a nostalgic recap of this iconic anti-hero’s thrilling second outing.

Approximately six years have passed since the beloved masked anti-hero, Deadpool, graced our screens in Deadpool 2. With the long-awaited third installment, Deadpool and Wolverine, just around the corner, let’s refresh our memories with Ryan Reynolds’s second take on the R-rated superhero.

In Deadpool 2, the story continues immediately following the first film’s conclusion, as Wade goes on the offensive against global crime lords, all while the upbeat melody of Dolly Parton’s classic “9-to-5” plays in the background.

In a nostalgic and engaging atmosphere, marked by guns, violence, and memorable music, Deadpool once again draws in viewers with his clever wit and colorful language. However, this familiar setup belies the unexpected twists that follow.

In contrast to Deadpool’s initial tale, the second installment delves deeper into the weighty consequences and darkness of assuming the role of a vigilante, complete with the unavoidable fallout that accompanies being a widely recognized masked assassin.

With the cyborg soldier Cable (Josh Brolin) who can travel through time by his side and the vengeful teen mutant Russell (Julian Dennison) creating chaos, Wade faces a challenging predicament: balancing the expectations of being a hero for the world and fulfilling the darker role that is required of him.

In Deadpool 2, Wade formed an improvised X-Men squad called X-Force. Unfortunately, most members met their end during their inaugural assignment, leaving only Peter alive. Going forward in time to save Peter was depicted in the post-credits scene. Despite this backstory, several significant plot elements from Deadpool 2 could influence future encounters between Deadpool and Wolverine within the X-Men universe of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What happened to Vanessa in Deadpool 2?

Following the action-packed beginning of Deadpool 2, the scene changes as Wade, or Deadpool himself, goes back home to his girlfriend Vanessa, who now lives with him. Daily life takes over, and they commemorate their anniversary by exchanging presents and discussing future plans, such as starting a family.

However, their elated joy is disrupted as the door crashes in, allowing a horde of assailants to invade the apartment and shoot indiscriminately. Vanessa quickly takes cover behind the sofa, remarkably escaping harm when Wade rushes over to check on her.

With a bashful demeanor, she rises from behind the couch. Suddenly, an uninvited lone gunman enters and fatally shoots her directly in the heart. Powerless to intervene, Wade can only look on with grief and rage as she breathes her last on the living room carpet.

Overwhelmed by sorrow, Wade finds it difficult to progress in the movie after such a massive loss, and he continues to bear the burden of her death within him.

But there is more to the story…

How did Wade time travel in Deadpool 2?

Fueled by his anger and inner turmoil, Wade ends up in the same place as his new flame-carrying companion, Russell – an icy confine. It’s during this period that Wade encounters Cable, a soldier from the future who carries a device allowing him to travel through time. With a slide mechanism, he can move between the present, past, or more precisely, the instant his family was killed.

In the movie’s finale, Wade puts himself in harm’s way to rescue Russell, ultimately giving up his own life – but this outcome is altered when Cable travels back in time and saves Wade instead.

Based on the condition of his unscathed daughter’s teddy bear, Cable is reassured that his family is secure. Deadpool’s noble deed altered Russell’s fate for the better.

Based on my extensive experience in time travel theory and having lived through the complexities of such a paradox, I can tell you that the situation described is indeed intriguing. Cable, a man burdened with the responsibility to alter past events to save future lives, was believed to have only two chances to use his time-travel device – one for the journey to the past and another for the return trip.

After the credits finish rolling, we learn that Wade manages to convince his X-Men teammates to repair the time-travel device, allowing him to move through time at will and as frequently as he pleases.

In a natural manner, he travels back in time to prevent Vanessa from getting hurt by being shot, leading him on an introspective journey through old memories.

Does Wolverine appear in Deadpool 2?

In technical terms, Deadpool and Wolverine haven’t shared a screen since the film “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” However, it’s worth mentioning that Wolverine did make a cameo in the post-credits scene of Deadpool 2.

During his journeys through time, Wade makes a stop to encounter Wolverine and the early version of Deadpool (as portrayed in the 2009 film). This Deadpool had his mouth sewn shut following experimental procedures carried out by General Stryker.

Wade eliminates the previous version of himself on screen to eliminate the memory of his earlier character, which faced criticism for straying significantly from the Comic Book. During this process, he encounters Logan, but Logan remains unresponsive because it’s just footage from the initial movie.

At the beginning of the movie, Deadpool makes a casual remark, “Farewell, Wolverine,” expressing his long-standing animosity towards Wolverine after the hero’s self-sacrificing death in Logan (released in 2017). Additionally, Wade keeps a miniature figurine of Logan on a music box as a memento.

These humorous references set the stage for the development of the rivalry, camaraderie, and hidden references in the Deadpool and Wolverine crossover.

You can find both Deadpool 2 and the original Deadpool movie currently streaming online on Disney Plus. Upcoming in theaters, starting on July 25, is the Deadpool and Wolverine film.
