Joker 2 casting director praises Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn
At the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, I was thrilled to attend a panel where Francine Maisler, the casting director for “Joker 2,” shared her glowing review of Lady Gaga’s performance in the film. In my opinion, this talented actress and musician truly shines while tackling such an iconic role.
“Maisler expressed how impressive she is in the role, stating, ‘She’ll leave you all amazed.’ I didn’t propose Lady Gaga for the part. That was Todd Phillips’ idea before me. However, let me tell you, she truly shines – her performance is astonishing. After seeing it, I was taken aback. Although we knew her capabilities from ‘A Star is Born,’ I thought this would be more of the same. But no, she’s not only holding her own against Joaquin Phoenix, but also delivering a genuine and captivating performance – one that doesn’t get lost in the intensity of her role.”
What is Joker 2 about?
The musical version of “Joker: Folie a Deux,” directed by Todd Phillips, tells the dark love story between Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn. A significant portion of this film is expected to unfold inside Arkham Asylum. Joining the cast are Zazie Beetz, Brendon Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Jacob Lofland.
In her own words, Beetz expressed, “The film’s musical aspects resonate deeply with me. I wasn’t taken aback since Todd has a knack for infusing creativity into his characters. Musicals have always held a special place in my heart as they allow characters to express their emotions so intensely that they can only sing and dance about it. I can relate to this feeling personally, as dancing and singing have been a powerful form of release for me during challenging times. I recall an instance when I was going through a particularly tough phase in life, and I found myself dancing and crying alone. This expression perfectly encapsulated my emotions at that moment. Given the Joker’s complex nature, it seems natural to me that he would express his feelings through song and dance.”
