Eternals: Marvel Confirms No "Immediate Plans" for Sequel

As a huge fan of Marvel movies, I must admit that Chloe Zhao’s “Eternals” left me feeling disappointed and disheartened. The film, which was met with lackluster reviews and disappointing box office numbers, is currently the MCU’s worst-performing film in terms of critical reception.

According to Marvel’s benchmarks, Chloe Zhao’s “Eternals” underperformed both critically and financially. When it premiered, it was panned by critics and currently holds one of the lowest ratings within the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassed only by “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” Consequently, there’s been little demand for a sequel to this film, which Marvel Studios is carefully monitoring. Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, has stated that no plans are in place for “Eternals 2” at present.

I was thrilled to hear Kevin Feige share during the Deadpool & Wolverine press tour that no concrete plans for Eternals 2 have been set yet. However, he did hint at some recognition of related events in recent trailers, with the intriguing revelation of giant creatures emerging from the ocean.

Why isn’t Eternals 2 getting made?

The box office revenue for Eternals, amounting to over $400 million worldwide, paled in comparison to the earnings of other Marvel Cinamic Universe films. Some cast members even shared their disappointment over the movie’s underperformance and the emotional toll it took on them.

As a huge fan of cinema and an actor myself, I can relate to Kumail Nanjiani’s feelings towards his work in that Marvel movie he mentioned. When I hear him talk about how much he adores the film and takes pride in it, I’m immediately drawn in by his passion and enthusiasm. It’s clear that this role meant a lot to him on a personal level.

He found the criticisms of the movie harsh and felt overly concerned about them. He read through every negative review and scrutinized it closely. He believed there may have been some unusual circumstances contributing to the film’s poor reception, and not all of it was based on its true merit. The experience left him feeling unfairly treated, both for himself and for Emily, and he realized he couldn’t continue working under such pressure. So, he began counseling sessions and continues discussing his feelings with a therapist.

Eternals is now streaming on Disney+.
