Doctor Who praised by BBC in annual report as ratings continue to grow

As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for British television, I couldn’t be more thrilled to hear about Doctor Who’s continued success and growth. The BBC’s annual report is further proof that this iconic sci-fi series continues to captivate audiences both young and old, not just in the UK but around the world.

The BBC’s annual report commends the success of Doctor Who, with viewership numbers for the latest season 14 increasing on BBC iPlayer.

In the report, the popular science fiction show was frequently highlighted as a major draw for the corporation’s large viewership. It was also noted for its significant economic influence in Wales and throughout the United Kingdom.

At the same time, it was announced late in the previous year the establishment of the Whoniverse, designed as a exclusive platform for housing an extensive collection of “Doctor Who” shows, encompassing over hundreds of episodes from both the classic and contemporary series.

In simpler terms, the report announced Doctor Who’s thrilling comeback on TV for the new season. It also revealed that the BBC and Disney had joined forces to turn Doctor Who into a worldwide sensation for British viewers and people around the globe.

Mentioned among this year’s notable content were the special programs for the 60th anniversaries, along with Eurovision broadcasts and the release of the third season of Planet Earth.

According to The Times’ most recent data, the new season’s drama is currently the highest-rated among BBC’s young audience (aged under 35) for the year.

Overnight ratings for the season had been lower than is typically the case due to the show’s new release strategy – which saw each episode debut on BBC iPlayer at midnight on Fridays, several hours before the BBC One broadcast on Saturday evening.

A representative for the program noted that it’s no longer just about overnight ratings, explaining: “In today’s on-demand viewing culture, the number of people tuning in after the initial broadcast is significant and should be accounted for as well.”

The latest Doctor Who series debuted on iPlayer approximately 23 hours prior to its regular TV transmission, and so far, around 6 million people have watched the first episode with the viewership still increasing.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be back on your screens this Christmas, with Doctor Who making its comeback on both BBC iPlayer and BBC One. And if you can’t wait any longer for more adventures through time and space, don’t worry! Previous seasons are already available for streaming on BBC iPlayer.
