Star Wars: The Acolyte Creator Reveals the Fight Club Homage in Season Finale

As a long-time gamer and avid fan of both Star Wars and David Fincher’s cinematic masterpieces, I was absolutely thrilled to see the intentional homage paid to “Fight Club” in the season finale of “Star Wars: The Acolyte.” The haunting image of Osha and The Stranger gazing out into the vast, ominous ocean was a chilling reminder of the destructive power of the dark side of the Force, as well as an intriguing nod to the final scenes of Fincher’s classic film.

As I sat there, watching the last few moments of “Star Wars: The Acolyte” unfold on my screen, I couldn’t help but feel a shiver run down my spine as Osha and The Stranger gazed out at the vast expanse of the ocean. Their words hung in the air like a promise, hinting that they were about to embark on a journey together, delving deeper into the dark side of the Force.

Headland explained that the outcome was a fortunate coincidence as well as deliberate: “During the blocking and setting up the scene, I discovered what it was and aimed to make it feel that way as accurately as possible,” he shared with the media. “These two characters have the power to destroy the world around them. The twist is that they won’t even come close to bringing down the part of society that insists they don’t belong.”

In Season 1 of “The Acolyte,” Osha experienced deep feelings of betrayal towards her ex-master Sol. Initially, it appeared that her sister Mae was embracing the ways of the Sith. However, ultimately, it was Osha who betrayed Sol and ended his life, aligning herself with The Stranger’s group. Although this narrative shares some thematic resemblances with “Fight Club,” where Jack / Tyler Durden and Marla, portrayed by Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter respectively, also grapple with betrayal, it does not follow the exact same path.

For me, “Fight Club” left a significant impact. The movie explores the feeling of being trapped by societal norms and structures. Tyler Durden is an intriguing character whose rebellious ideas, despite becoming increasingly dangerous, are incredibly alluring. This concept resonates with Manny Jacinto’s character in Episode 6 when he says, “When you have nothing left, that’s when you’re truly free.” This sentiment is borrowed from Tyler Durden. Once we let go of our ties to these institutions and fail to conform to their expectations, we can finally begin embracing who we genuinely are.

As Osha and The Stranger gazed out at an endless expanse of opportunities, the finale of “Fight Club” saw Jack / Tyler Durden and Marla observe the collapse of credit card corporations in the city. This symbolized a new beginning for those burdened with debt from these companies.

Season 1 of Star Wars: The Acolyte is now streaming on Disney+.
