As a dedicated gamer and avid fan of the DC Universe, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that Matt Reeves was bringing a new perspective to Batman with “The Batman” in 2022. The standalone film was a breath of fresh air, marking the beginning of a new era for the iconic character, untangled from the larger cinematic universe since “The Dark Knight Rises.” I was thrilled to see the potential for a new storyline and a more gritty, grounded take on Batman.
As a devoted fan of the Caped Crusader, I’m thrilled to be part of Batman’s fresh start in the DC Universe. In 2022, “The Batman” brought us an all-new experience with Robert Pattinson leading the charge, marking the first time the Dark Knight stood alone on the big screen since “The Dark Knight Rises” in 2012. With this movie, we saw a new world for Batman, untouched by other cinematic universes.
Matt Reeves Addresses Arkham, Gotham PD Cancellations
Not all of those developing spin-offs got the green light.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Matt Reeves shared insights into the progress of developing spin-offs for his expanding Batman film series.
While working on the script for “The Batman” movie, I found myself thinking, “You know what else would be interesting? Creating some related shows.” This idea was a major reason why I chose to sign our deal with Warner Bros. instead of other studios.
Reeves referred to his agreement with Warner Bros. and Warner Bros. Television, secured not long after “The Batman” finished playing in theaters. Impressively, HBO executives expressed interest in Reeves’ ideas, but they emphasized a particular point.
Reeves remarked, “They responded with enthusiasm, expressing their preference for focusing more on the main characters.”
During that period, Reeves and his team were working on three potential spin-offs: “Arkham Asylum,” “Gotham PD,” and “The Penguin.” Unfortunately, “Arkham Asylum” and “Gotham PD” were canceled. However, elements of their narratives were incorporated into the final product that emerged as “The Penguin.”
As a devoted fan of both cinema and television, I’ve witnessed countless projects that seemed to linger in development hell for years before finally seeing the light of day. But with “The Penguin,” it was an entirely different story. Having followed the buzz surrounding Colin Farrell’s exceptional performance as the Gotham City villain in “The Batman,” I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement when rumors began circulating about an HBO series in the works.
Intriguingly enough, the film hints at the Riddler’s primary suspect being none other than the Penguin, who appears to be an informant. Reeves subtly suggested this twist in The Penguin’s tale. With the power vacuum created in the story, people underestimate the Penguin and fail to recognize his true identity.
Max will begin showing “The Penguin” on September 8th. “The Batman Part II” is predicted to start filming in the year 2025.
