2024 Paris Olympics: Surfers Show Off Floating Village in Tahiti

As a dedicated follower of sports and athletic competitions, I have seen my fair share of athlete accommodations throughout the years. However, nothing quite compares to the luxurious living conditions of the Olympic surfers in Tahiti for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Surfers didn’t see the cardboard bed news because they were not in Paris.

In fact, contrary to popular belief, not all athletes participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics will reside in Paris. A notable exception are the surfers who will be lodged on the French island of Tahiti instead, which is approximately 10,000 miles away from the Olympic venue.

Despite this, Tim Elter, a German surfer, gave a peek into the living quarters of him and other surfers, revealing they’re thoroughly enjoying their time on the Polynesian island. In truth, Elter showcased his accommodation on board Aranui 5, where all the surfers will be staying for the upcoming two weeks, in a TikTok video posted on July 21st.

Tim’s room boasts a genuine, spacious bed instead of a flimsy cardboard one. Moreover, it boasts a balcony providing stunning vistas of Tahiti’s water and greenery. Fans were thrilled with the perks enjoyed by Olympic surfers, praising their views, comfortable beds, air conditioning, and privacy.

“One fan exclaimed, ‘Parisian athletes will be taken aback when they witness this,’ to which Tim responded with several laugh emojis and agreed, ‘They indeed will.'”

Near the secluded Teahupo’o village on Tahiti’s shore, the Aranui 5 cruise ship is currently accommodating 48 athletes. These athletes will participate in 10 surfing competitions. As per regulations for the 2024 Paris Olympics, this was the sole suitable lodging option for the surfers, as reported by NBC Los Angeles.

The reason is that Olympic villages need to be no more than 45 minutes from their competition sites. Unfortunately, Tahiti lacks suitable accommodations for the surfers that meet this requirement. The Aranui 5, on the other hand, boasts 105 large rooms and various facilities including a restaurant, four bars, two conference rooms, two lounges, a dance room, and a library, as stated on its website.

I’m an avid follower of the Olympics and this year, as one of the over 14,000 athletes competing in Paris, I’ve had to make do with less than luxurious accommodations. Just like Tom Daley, the British Olympic diver, demonstrated on TikTok, we’ve been assigned those notorious cardboard beds once again in our very own Seine-Saint-Denis village.

Despite rumors, the cardboard beds are not so the Olympians won’t have sex with each other.

I’m absolutely infatuated with those legendary Japanese beds from the renowned company. You won’t believe this, but here’s the kicker: the amusing aspect is that there was no factual basis to the rumors circulating about them being anti-sex! I had a heart-to-heart conversation with Brett Thornton, their COO, who shared this revelation with me and added a playful twist by jokingly referring to it as a “blessing in disguise” for their brand.

Thornton remarked that the eco-friendly aspect of being able to easily clean and recycle them sets these beds apart for the first time.
