Borderlands Director Eli Roth Hints at Possible Sequel Scene

As a long-time fan of the Borderlands franchise, I have to admit that I was disappointed to hear that the wedding scene between Wainwright Jakobs and Sir Alistair Hammerlock didn’t make it into the upcoming movie adaptation. In the games, this scene holds significant importance as it is a pivotal moment in the narrative of the DLC “Guns, Love, and Tentacles” for Borderlands 3. The Vault Hunters were invited to the wedding on the planet Xylourgos, only to be greeted with chaos when a cult worshiping the H.P. Lovecraft-inspired creature Gythian interrupted the ceremony.

In the upcoming release of “Borderlands” in theaters next month, fans will notice an absence of one particular scene from the video game: the wedding of Wainwright Jakobs and Sir Alistair Hammerlock. Despite both characters being present in the film, portrayed by actors Cheyenne Jackson and Charles Babalola respectively, this scene was unfortunately removed during post-production under the direction of Eli Roth. Although filmed for “Borderlands,” Roth described it as a “detour” that disrupted the movie’s flow and ultimately decided to cut it. However, he left open the possibility of revisiting the wedding in future installments.

In simpler terms, Roth told EW, “If we’re fortunate enough to make another film, we’ll have more material to work with. But it’s a challenge, and our duty is to the project and its narrative.”

It’s clear that a follow-up film largely depends on the reception of the initial movie. The gaming industry is thriving like never before when it comes to adaptations, but Borderlands‘s production has faced numerous challenges. Considering these hurdles, it’s understandable for fans to harbor doubts about the final product. Nonetheless, Roth’s discussion of a potential sequel shouldn’t be dismissed outright. Once the movie premieres on August 9th, we’ll see if both dedicated and casual viewers are clamoring for more.

In the expanded storyline of “Borderlands 3,” the marriage of Wainwright and Hammerlock was pivotal. The Vault Hunters received an invitation to their union on the planet Xylourgos. However, the celebration took a turn for the worse when a cult devoted to the Lovecraftian monster Gythian intervened. Based on Roth’s depiction of the excised wedding scene from the “Borderlands” film, it appears that these events might not have been included. The omission could prove beneficial if it serves as the foundation for a future “Borderlands” installment.
