As a longtime fan of both Deadpool and Wolverine, I have been eagerly anticipating the release of “Deadpool & Wolverine” with bated breath. Having grown up watching Hugh Jackman’s iconic portrayal of Logan in the X-Men films, and later falling in love with Ryan Reynolds’ irreverent take on the Merc with a Mouth, I was excited to see these two beloved characters share the screen.
Cynicism and superheroes have long been interconnected. Critics have voiced their concerns about the genre as a whole, while creators seek to add a darker perspective. This tension has fueled groundbreaking storytelling and provocative twists. The Deadpool films from 20th Century Fox, which entered the superhero movie scene in 2016 and 2018, were known for their R-rated humor poking fun at clichés and pop culture fads. Some fans found it hilarious, while others grew weary of it, particularly considering the films’ place within the limited Fox universe of X-Men movies. With this week’s Deadpool & Wolverine, the franchise is now part of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Multiverse Saga,” and the only Marvel Studios release for 2023, generating excitement among fans about its potential. I, too, harbored cynicism, fearing that the third installment might get lost in a larger playground and face increased pressure. However, Deadpool & Wolverine exceeded expectations, delivering an emotionally resonant, thrilling, and exhilarating superhero experience unlike any other in recent years.
In the beginning of Deadpool & Wolverine, aimlessly wandering is Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool/Wade Wilson as he ponders his identity and role as an antihero. However, his routine is disrupted when Agent Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen) and the Time Variance Authority intrude, forcing Deadpool to team up with the reluctant and weary Logan Howlett/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). As a duo, they embark on an unpredictable adventure filled with shocks, brutality, and the formidable menace of Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), Charles Xavier’s hidden mutant sister.
In simpler terms, the plot of “Deadpool & Wolverine” goes beyond what’s presented in its synopsis with numerous absurd and implausible scenes. The film features unexpected cameos, which are best experienced firsthand while navigating the story’s complex twists and turns. Unlike some recent multiverse superhero stories, these appearances are integral to the plot rather than being mere gimmicks that fall flat or exploitative. “Deadpool & Wolverine” offers a platform for these characters to have funny and fulfilling moments amidst the on-screen mayhem, contributing to the movie’s unique perspective on the evolving superhero genre.
In the film “Deadpool & Wolverine,” you’ll find an ample dose of that perspective, blending the ridiculous and unexpectedly heartfelt. Regarding the humorous side, this production is brimming with quips poking fun at Marvel Studios and their prolonged reign in pop culture. Many of these jabs gain more impact when delivered by the studio itself. Most remarkably, however, the majority of the jokes work exceptionally well, often due to the script’s agile ability to transition past or even acknowledge Wade’s repetitive one-liners when they no longer serve a purpose. Of course, there is always a risk that the humor in “Deadpool & Wolverine” may grow stale or outdated over time. Nevertheless, under Shawn Levy’s guidance, the movie refuses to lean solely on its comedy and instead offers a more nuanced experience.
Instead, Deadpool & Wolverine keeps a thematic core that tackles insecurity, failure, and loneliness at virtually every turn. While it takes a few beats for the surprisingly small-scale story to kick into high gear, those emotions certainly fuel our two protagonists, who are charting their own courses toward a future that will hopefully be a little bit kinder to them. But those emotions also seem to fuel the entire existence of Deadpool & Wolverine, as the movie argues that the ambition of breaking impossible box-office records and expanding a cinematic universe shouldn’t get in the way of telling a story that viewers actually care about. Even in a movie that will surely break box-office records, and in a cinematic universe that still continues to grow, it’s a sense of honesty that is refreshing.
In simple terms, the acting of Deadpool and Wolverine by Reynolds and Jackman respectively is equally enjoyable, an achievement made more remarkable due to their long history of portraying these characters. Reynolds brings a natural and humorous take on Deadpool, whether he’s making lighthearted comments or pondering his personal journey. Jackman’s Wolverine provides a gritty contrast with Deadpool’s antics, highlighting the best aspects of his performance in the X-Men series. Corrin’s Cassandra Nova is a horrifying and captivating villain on screen, staying true to her bizarre comic book origins. MacFadyen adds delightful flair to every scene as an over-the-top character, while Baccarin and Uggams reprise their roles as Vanessa and Blind Al, adding depth and authenticity to the Deadpool universe.
As a huge fan, I’d say that although it may not be the most visually stunning Marvel Studios production, Deadpool & Wolverine offers a pleasant improvement to the relatively dull visuals of the previous two films. The cinematography by George Richmond skillfully transports us between the film’s vast and intimate locations, maintaining the vibrant colors of the heroes’ meticulously designed costumes created by Graham Churchyard and Mayes C. Rubeo. The carefully placed needle drops in the soundtrack are instantly recognizable yet subtly unobtrusive, leaving viewers with a fresh perspective on certain songs moving forward. A significant part of this can be attributed to the brilliant fight choreography, which showcases grueling hand-to-hand combat that effectively utilizes the MCU’s first R-rating.
In the constant chatter about superhero exhaustion, excessive spoilers, and insufficient storytelling, it’s a refreshing surprise to encounter a new superhero adaptation that leaves us genuinely astonished – like Deadpool & Wolverine. This film stands out not only for its stunning twists but also for the heartfelt motivation behind them. Despite a few minor imperfections, the movie delivers an exhilarating blockbuster experience and showcases the delightful chemistry between its two main characters. The audacious production style and the exceptional acting of its talented cast make Deadpool & Wolverine an unexpected reminder of why we fell in love with superhero films in the first place.
