Watch Hugh Jackman React to Deadpool's Hugh Jackman Jokes

As a long-time fan of both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman‘s iconic superhero roles, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I heard they were finally teaming up for “Deadpool & Wolverine” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The anticipation was palpable, as their real-life friendship and the much-publicized “feud” between Deadpool and Wolverine added an exciting layer to this highly-anticipated collaboration.

The decades-long friendship between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, who previously clashed on screen as enemies in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” back in 2009, has put their differences aside. In Marvel Studios’ new film “Deadpool & Wolverine,” hitting theaters this week, they reunite as friends and once again embody their iconic characters. After much persuasion from Reynolds, Jackman emerged from his superhero retirement, changing his mind about leaving the claws behind in 2017’s “Logan.” While “Logan” marked the end of Jackman’s 17-year tenure as Wolverine in nine X-Men films produced by Fox, it represents the start of a potential new chapter and strong bond between them within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

For Reynolds, the co-writer and producer, seeing Deadpool and Wolverine team up is the culmination of all the witty references to Jackman/Logan/Wolverine that Deadpool made in the 2016 film “Deadpool” and its 2018 sequel “Deadpool 2”.

“When he announced he wouldn’t act as Wolverine anymore, I reacted with surprise and disappointment, saying something like, ‘Really? Why quit on us?'” (Reynolds to BBC Radio 1)

I personally believe that the first two Deadpool films were thoughtfully crafted tributes to Jackman by Reynolds. From a People Magazine cover announcing him as the “Sexiest Man Alive,” to intricately designed props like an impaled Logan music box, to the post-credits scene in Deadpool 2 that corrected the mistakes of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, were all elements Reynolds referred to as a long-term initiation ritual.

Since 2016, Reynolds has advocated for a Deadpool/Wolverine film. He successfully brought the red-suited, potty-mouthed mercenary to life in the R-rated hit “Deadpool.” Notably, this release coincided with Jackman’s decision to leave the X-Men universe behind.

Jackman shared, “The first 40 times I watched Deadpool, I couldn’t get enough of it. Admitedly, I saw the initial screening in a private theater that Ryan arranged before its release. This was only three days after I declared I wouldn’t be reprising my role as Wolverine again. I recall thinking, ‘Oh no, I may have made a mistake.’ It took us nearly six years to reach this point.”

Reynolds jokingly commented, “That note was the most doubt-inducing one I’ve ever come across, in terms of being written, filmed, produced, and secured.”

Marvel’s film “Deadpool with Wolverine,” where you’ll find returning actors such as Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Karan Soni (Dopinder), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Rob Delaney (Peter), Dafne Keen from “Logan” as Laura/X-23, and Matthew Macfadyen and Emma Corrin portraying Agent Paradox and Cassandra Nova respectively, is set to hit theaters on July 26th.
