As a long-time gamer and avid Marvel Comics fan, I’ve watched Mystique’s tumultuous journey through the X-Men universe with bated breath. The Krakoan Age brought new hope for our shape-shifting mutant terrorist, but now that it’s over, I can’t help but feel a sense of unease. Mystique’s chaotic past is once again coming back to haunt her, and as a fan, I’m on the edge of my seat waiting to see what comes next.
During the Krakoan Era, Mystique the enigmatic shape-shifter and mutant terrorist experienced significant transformation. She perished while aiding the X-Men against Orchis, an anti-mutant group, but was brought back to life by The Five. Following her resurrection, she became a member of Krakoa’s Quiet Council. In this new chapter of her life, Mystique reaffirmed her marriage vows with her deceased spouse Destiny, disclosed the truth behind Nightcrawler’s birth, and cultivated a fresh bond with Rogue, who was now leading the Uncanny X-Men. However, the era of mutantkind under Krakoan rule has come to an end.
In July, the first issue of X-Men marked the beginning of a new phase, From the Ashes, for the X-Men comic series line. This storyline will carry on in October with the debut of Mystique’s long-awaited solo comic book series since 2003.
After the collapse of the mutant state, Mystique’s harsh tactics are needed again to safeguard mutants. In the five-issue series by Declan Shalvey (“Moon Knight,” “Dead Man Logan”), Mystique’s violent actions attract Nick Fury’s notice, leading to a dangerous game of hide-and-seek throughout the Marvel Universe. With a lengthy hit list and criminal record, Mystique dons a new costume for her latest adventure, evoking her beloved early 2000s spy stories as she assumes an essential role in the present mutant scene.
As a seasoned intelligence officer with years of experience chasing down elusive targets, I can tell you that tracking a subject with a contradictory history is one of the most challenging and frustrating investigations. It’s like trying to hold water in your hand – just when you think you have a grip on the situation, it slips away, leaving you feeling bewildered and uncertain.
As an avid comic book fan, I’m thrilled to share that in October, I’ll be getting my hands on the first issue of Mystique, featuring stunning interior artwork by Shalvey and a captivating cover. But that’s not all! This exciting new series will also offer variant covers from an impressive lineup of talented artists.
