Taika Waititi gender-swapped Lisa Kudrow’s Time Bandits character because ‘it felt boring’

As a long-time fan of Lisa Kudrow’s acting prowess, I was thrilled to learn that she would be joining Taika Waititi‘s new Apple TV+ comedy series, Time Bandits. However, it came as a pleasant surprise when I discovered that she very nearly didn’t get the part due to her character being originally male.

In a surprising reveal, co-creator Taika Waititi disclosed that Lisa Kudrow came close to not landing her role in Apple TV+’s “Time Bandits,” as her character was initially written for a male actor.

In the latest show, we meet young Kevin, an enthusiastic history lover portrayed by Kal-El Tuck. Unintentionally, he travels back in time and finds himself among a rowdy gang of bandits, with Penelope (played by Kudrow) leading the group.

Kudrow shared her initial thoughts on the script: “Initially, the role I was set to portray was male. This kept drawing my attention to pronouns and such. Yet, despite this distraction, I sensed the humor and quality in the script were strong.”

Waititi explained, “We went through an extensive casting call for every role, initially considering male actors since that part was written for a man. However, I found myself growing tired of the same old thing.”

“I’ve been pondering lately how many shows feature male team leaders, and it seems rather monotonous to me.”

Jemaine Clement, a collaborator, remarked, “Moreover, you’ve proposed Lisa for various projects we’ve discussed before. This is the initial opportunity for the two of you to team up.”

Waititi expressed that although he held a deep appreciation for Kudrow due to her iconic performance in Friends, it was the comedy show The Comeback that truly solidified his admiration for her talent.

In my opinion, “The Comeback” is an extraordinary show, and she single-handedly brought it to life. As I watched the production unfold, I couldn’t help but think what a comedic genius she is. I’ve been a fan of hers for quite some time now, and we’re truly fortunate to witness her talent.

Kudrow contributed significantly to the script as well. Clement shared that during filming, there would be takes where the humor didn’t quite land. However, Kudrow had the ability to regroup and add a humorous remark at the end to salvage the situation.

In the initial episode, there was an improvement we appreciated. It involved her remarking, “That was quite an unnecessary use of time travel,” after which she would casually make such comments.

Kudrow acknowledges that her past experience in comedy didn’t significantly aid her in tackling a fresh project. She adds, “Each comedy has its unique rhythm, so I’m not sure if it provides any advantage.”

“At the start, I often feel uncertain and anxious, wondering if I’m up to the task and if they made a mistake bringing me on board.”

Time Bandits is available to stream now on Apple TV+.
