Mario + Rabbids Creative Director Announces Ubisoft Departure

As a long-time gamer and avid fan of the Mario + Rabbids series, I was taken aback by the recent news of Davide Soliani’s departure from Ubisoft after 25 years of service. Soliani’s announcement on Twitter left many fans, including myself, feeling a sense of loss as he had been an integral part of the team that brought the beloved crossover series to life on Nintendo Switch.

In an unexpected move, Davide Soliani has disclosed that he is departing from Ubisoft after having worked there for 25 years. Notably, he has been instrumental in developing the Mario + Rabbids series on Nintendo Switch for over a decade. Soliani made this announcement via his X/Twitter account and expressed gratitude to fans, as well as sharing a memorable image of the unveiling of “Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle” at E3 2017. While Soliani gave a hint about his future plans, it remains uncertain where he will go next. We eagerly anticipate that his upcoming project will generate the same level of success as the Mario + Rabbids games.

“Hello everyone, after an amazing 25-year journey, the last 11 of which were spent working on Mario+Rabbids with Nintendo and our dedicated player community, I have made the difficult decision to leave Ubisoft to pursue a new challenge. I’m unable to share any details at this time. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your support throughout the years.” – Soliani.

As a dedicated fan of the Mario + Rabbids series, I can’t help but feel a pang of concern with the recent news of Soliani’s departure. Ever since the launch of “Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope,” there have been hints that this beloved franchise might be nearing its end. Last year, Grant Kirkhope, the talented composer behind eight years of Mario + Rabbids music, announced that his tenure had concluded with the game’s DLC completion. The underperforming sales of the sequel didn’t bode well for the future, and now it seems the team is focusing on new projects. It’s a sad thought, but I can only hope that this isn’t the final chapter for Mario + Rabbids.

Soliani’s deep-rooted love for the Mario series made him an ideal choice to lead the Mario + Rabbids project. During E3 2017, he won over Nintendo enthusiasts with a heartfelt reaction upon the game’s unveiling. In his conversation with ComicBook in 2022, Soliani appeared optimistic about the prospect of a third installment, although it appears that isn’t in the cards anymore. It wouldn’t be astonishing if Soliani eventually joined Nintendo given his strong affinity for Mario titles. Until he shares his intentions, we can only speculate where Soliani might end up, but let’s hope he lands somewhere that will utilize his skills effectively.
