As a devoted cinephile and former Olympic swimmer, I am thrilled about the upcoming Olympics. Apart from my TV duties, I’ll be tuning in for athletics and gymnastics. I remember London 2012 vividly, where I couldn’t help but get hooked on taekwondo despite not being a regular viewer. This time around, I’m particularly excited about British swimming.
Apart from your TV duties, what events will you be tuning in for?
I have a strong affinity for track and field events, as well as gymnastics. One of the joys of the Olympics is discovering new-to-me sports that captivate me. Previously, I found myself unable to look away from taekwondo matches. Everyone seems to become an instant expert during these moments.
What will be the big swimming stories at these Games?
I’ve always been inspired by the resilience of athletes, especially when they openly share their struggles and continue to push themselves to new heights. Adam Peaty’s story is no exception. After facing challenges, he’s back in top form and aiming for an impressive triple victory. It’s truly remarkable to see his determination and strength of character.
What do you think is behind the resurgence in British swimming?
Members of this young generation drew inspiration from London’s 2012 events and have since developed resilience under pressure. Pioneers such as Adam Peaty and Duncan Scott have blazed a trail for transformation within the competitive scene.
What would you tell any athlete who is going to the Games for the first time?
For me, London passed by in the blink of an eye. I’d advise seizing every moment and absorbing as much as possible. Otherwise, stick to your plan and follow through with your proven strategies during regular competitions.
After retiring in the year 2021, you’ve shared your experiences with dealing with mental health issues. What specifically have been the most significant hurdles for you in this regard?
In simpler terms, swimming was my familiar territory where I thrived during competitions. I used to have well-laid plans for the next year, month, or even week. However, unexpectedly, all of that structure vanished, leaving me with an abundance of time and energy but also raising the question, “What’s next?” Additionally, having a robust support system was a constant presence, but now that has shifted as well.
How do you take care of yourself?
I believe that taking care of both my physical and mental wellbeing is essential for living a balanced and fulfilling life. For me, this includes setting aside time each week for activities that promote health and happiness. I make it a point to go swimming once a week and visit the gym to keep my body in shape. Additionally, I prioritize connecting with others by talking to people, catching up with friends, and going for leisurely walks. These actions not only lift my spirits but also contribute to my overall mental health. Despite the challenges that life may present, I am determined to maintain this routine as a means of staying fit, both physically and mentally.
What’s your all-time most magical Olympics memory?
At the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Max Whitlock earned not one, but two gold medals in gymnastics. This was an emotionally charged experience. On the other hand, during the high jump event at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, athletes from Italy and Qatar chose to share the gold medal, creating a heartwarming moment filled with the essence of the Olympic spirit.
