A Complete Unknown Trailer Starring Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan Released

As a huge fan of Bob Dylan and his music, I am thrilled to pieces about the upcoming biopic “A Complete Unknown” by James Mangold. The trailer has only heightened my excitement, transporting me back in time to the 1960s New York folk scene and giving me goosebumps with Edward Norton’s portrayal of Pete Seeger and Timothée Chalamet’s authentic performance as young Bob Dylan.

Searchlight Pictures unveiled the initial preview for “A Complete Unknown,” a new biopic about Bob Dylan directed by James Mangold. This upcoming film delves into Dylan’s early career years and is set against the backdrop of the 1960s New York folk music scene. In the trailer, Edward Norton portrays Pete Seeger, serving as a narrative framework. During these segments, a young Bob Dylan (unspecified actor) strums “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” a track from Dylan’s 1963 album “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.” The trailer hints at a romantic entanglement between Dylan and Suze Rotolo, who graced the cover of that album, as well as folk artist Joan Baez, portrayed by Monica Barbaro.

In the trailer below, Elle Fanning portrays Sylvie Russo instead of Rotolo, who is absent from the film in a technical sense.

Rotolo, often considered Dylan’s muse for several early songs, had a turbulent ending to their three-year relationship. Dylan expressed his displeasure towards Rotolo’s family in an infamous 8-minute song, despite them never being supportive of the romance. In the 2007 film “I’m Not There,” Heath Ledger portrayed a character with a loose resemblance to Dylan’s relationship with Charlotte Gainsbourg’s Claire. Their on-screen chemistry recreated the iconic cover art for “A Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.” Rotolo was uncomfortable with being labeled solely by this relationship throughout her life, but she did utilize a cropped image of it for her autobiography’s cover.

In the film’s timeframe, Dylan gained worldwide recognition as the most famous folk singer, climbing to fame but losing favor among some friends and fans when he switched to rock music at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. The hints of the tumultuous relationship with Rotolo and the impending portrayal of his romance with Baez suggest a movie featuring significant rise and fall events.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

As a huge fan of music history, I can’t help but be captivated by the tale of a young Minnesota musician named Bob Dylan, portrayed brilliantly by Timothée Chalamet, in the movie “A Complete Unknown.” Set against the backdrop of New York City’s powerful music scene during the early 60s, this story follows my personal hero as he embarks on an extraordinary journey to fame. At just 19 years old, Dylan’s raw talent as a folk singer began to captivate audiences in concert halls and top the charts around the world. His enigmatic persona and poetic lyrics left people spellbound, creating a global sensation that would forever change music history. The pinnacle of this meteoric rise came when Dylan boldly challenged traditions by delivering an electrifying rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, leaving me – and countless others – speechless.

In “A Complete Unknown,” directed by James Mangold, Timothé Chalamet portrays a character reminiscent of Bob Dylan. Joining him are Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Boyd Holbrook, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz, and Scoot McNairy in this intriguing film. Don’t miss it when it hits theaters exclusively this December.
