As a longtime fan of Kyoto Animation and someone deeply affected by the tragic arson attack that occurred five years ago, I cannot help but feel a profound sense of sorrow and respect as I learn about the newly dedicated memorial for the victims. The outpouring of support from the community, both locally and globally, is truly heartwarming.
Five years have passed since the shocking arson at Kyoto Animation that left the world in disbelief. In this sad milestone, we remember the devastating attack that claimed the lives of 36 people and injured many more within the anime community. Since then, Kyoto Animation has been dedicated to establishing a permanent memorial for those who perished in July 2018. Finally, after years of hard work, this touching tribute to the victims has opened just days before the fifth anniversary.
As a local resident of Kyoto Prefecture, I have always held a deep connection to Uji, the place where the beloved Kyoto Animation studio is situated. The tragic arson incident that took place there this year left an indelible mark on our community. In an attempt to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in this senseless act of violence, we worked together with the studio staff to design a memorial.
The monument features a tall, almost 10-foot statue consisting of 36 white birds. Each bird symbolizes one of the arson victims. They are arranged with their heads pointing upwards. A commemorative plaque is attached to the base where you can read its inscription.
Sharing dreams and enthusiasm with one another, we create boundless dreams brought to life through animation. Each line drawn reflects decades of honed skill and deep emotion. From right here in Uji, Kyoto, these dreams take flight and soar into the world, heading towards a continuous future filled with unbroken promise.
If you’re planning to pay your respects at this memorial, it can be found within the Tea and Uji History Park in Kyoto. Kindly note that Kyoto Animation has requested that no flowers, candles, or other items be left at the site. Going forward, the area is intended as a peaceful space for contemplation following the tragic loss of over 30 lives at Kyoto Animation. The pain of this event remains raw for all those affected.
