Deadpool & Wolverine director relives moment he pitched awkward Marvel jokes to Kevin Feige

As a die-hard fan of the Deadpool franchise, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that Deadpool & Wolverine was officially joining the MCU. The thought of Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth poking fun at the Marvel Cinematic Universe and having awkward conversations with Marvel boss Kevin Feige was just too enticing to resist.

In the constantly shifting landscape of superhero films, Deadpool never fails to make light of the situation, and now his targets include the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In simpler terms, the first Deadpool and Wolverine film starring Ryan Reynolds is now an official part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This required the movie to poke fun at the franchise and its recent productions. As a result, director Shawn Levy had some uncomfortable discussions with Marvel’s head honcho, Kevin Feige.

I can still recall the experience of running some of those rough jokes by Feige during one of our meetings. It was my first time encountering this, and it happened when Kevin came to visit us in the UK at Pinewood Studios. We presented him with the scene where Deadpool expresses doubts about his recent successes.

I focused my gaze on the screen while Kevin sat on the couch nearby. I kept stealing glances at him, hoping he would find the situation amusing rather than sad. To my relief, he burst out laughing.

Based on my experience working in the film industry and having collaborated with numerous actors and directors, I can relate to what you’re saying about Kevin’s approach to making the Deadpool-Wolverine movie.

“And, to his credit, the only rule was if it’s funny, funny wins. He’s been an incredible partner.”

In response to being queried about the scenes that made him apprehensive to present to Feige, Levy mentioned, “One instance was when we discussed the latest sequence of Marvel movies. A few other moments caused similar uneasiness as well.”

“Deadpool stands out for its equal-opportunity offensive humor. Notably, when Deadpool meets Wolverine, he welcomes him to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a quip, ‘By the way, you’re joining at a low point.’ When we suggested this line to Kevin Feige, he found it amusing.”

“In my opinion, what makes the Deadpool series, starting with the first movies like Deadpool 1, featuring Ryan Reynolds as the bumbling perfection of God, so effective is the ability to poke fun at oneself. And Reynolds has consistently shown this readiness to make light of himself above all else.”

In an upcoming R-rated film, Deadpool, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, encounters Wolverine, played once again by Hugh Jackman. These Marvel characters are predicted to make appearances. With animosities running high between them, they must set aside their disagreements and join forces to vanquish a mutual foe.
