Donkey Kong Bananza Director is “Aware” of Slight Performance Drops During Destruction

After a highly successful debut, Nintendo Switch 2 is set to release another high-profile exclusive game titled “Donkey Kong Bananza” this week. The 3D platformer looks impressive in every aspect, including the confirmation of Pauline and the diverse range of Bananza Powers, as well as the involvement of the team behind “Super Mario Odyssey” in its development.

As a game designer working on this project, I’m thrilled to share that our goal was to maintain a seamless chain of destruction across levels. To achieve this, we knew we needed an abundance of destructible elements, something only possible with the Nintendo Switch 2’s impressive capabilities. It boasts a vast screen real estate and supports a myriad of materials and large-scale demolition.

To make the experience even more rewarding, we dedicated significant resources to perfecting the visual, auditory, and tactile aspects of destruction. From the explosive sounds to the satisfying crumble of objects, every detail has been meticulously crafted to ensure you feel the power of your destructive prowess!

Nevertheless, astute players might have spotted minor slowdowns in the gameplay. Director Kazuya Takahashi admitted that these issues could surface during “significant alterations and devastation within the environment.

In our work, several aspects need attention. Initially, we strategically incorporated hit-stop and slow-motion effects to highlight collisions. Secondly, due to the voxel technology employed, there might be instances of significant environmental alterations or destruction, which could lead to a temporary decrease in performance. Nevertheless, Takahashi and his crew focused primarily on ensuring enjoyment and playability during these extensive transformations, aiming for a generally seamless experience.

To get a detailed analysis of the game’s performance, we’ll need to dive right in! Keep an eye out for further announcements about Donkey Kong Bananza, which releases on July 17th for the Nintendo Switch 2. The King of Kong embarks on a journey deep into Ingot Isle, where it’s rumored that one’s heartfelt desires will come true. Alongside him is Pauline, who’s also looking to find her way back home. Notably, players can enjoy co-op gameplay with Pauline as a playable character!

Through gathering Banadium Gems, players can enhance Donkey Kong’s skills. Additionally, there are numerous costumes to be found, each offering special advantages when used by the team.
