Deadpool & Wolverine multiverse scene includes one huge shock

As a huge fan of comic books and movies, I’ve followed Henry Cavill’s journey as Superman with great interest since Man of Steel came out in 2013. His portrayal of the iconic character was both powerful and nuanced, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of disappointment when he announced his departure from the role earlier this year.

Warning: contains spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine.

The Deadpool & Wolverine production showcases various cherished (as well as less recognized) Marvel characters, both old and new. However, it left audiences in awe when an unexpected guest star from the competing DC Comics universe made a shocking appearance.

As a film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: During Deadpool’s thrilling, chaotic journey across the multiverse in search of a cure for his dying world, Henry Cavill makes a brief yet memorable appearance on my screen.

The previous actor of Superman is an excellent addition to Ryan Reynolds’s long-awaited sequel. Some comic book fans are still debating if Cavill should have continued in the iconic DC character (David Corenswet has now replaced him in the role).

In other words, why did this unexpected appearance occur in the Marvel Cinematic Universe storyline, and could it have implications for future developments?

In this article, I’ll share with you some intriguing insights and hypotheses about the portrayed Wolverine versions in the movie that have gained a lot of popularity among fans. So, keep reading!

Deadpool & Wolverine’s shock Henry Cavill cameo explained

During his journey across different universes, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) comes across a potential Wolverine match that looks highly suitable to him.

In the background, the car dubbed the “Chatty Merc” moves steadily toward a man, engrossed in fixing his motorbike, clad in a white vest reminiscent of Hugh Jackman’s portrayal.

I was taken aback when I finally came face-to-face with this iteration of Wolverine, only to find that it wasn’t Hugh Jackman under the suit, but instead, Henry Cavill.

It’s no surprise that Deadpool expresses his enthusiasm for the beloved actor, assuring fans that Marvel will give him better treatment than his past employer. This is a subtle reference to Deadpool’s controversial departure from Superman’s team. However, Cavill’s portrayal of Wolverine remains unimpressed.

He easily sends Deadpool packing with brute force, and does not reappear in the film.

Is Henry Cavill playing Wolverine in the MCU?

After Henry Cavill unexpectedly left the DC Extended Universe, some fans have suggested that Marvel should offer him a significant part in their rival franchise as a replacement.

In other words, the encounter between Deadpool and Wolverine in this particular instance is likely to be well-received by fans, but it may not have any significant implications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future developments.

Rather, this could very well be the last time we see Cavill’s Wolverine.

An effective way to rephrase this would be: In “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness,” John Krasinski made a surprising cameo as Reed Richards, also known as Mr. Fantastic, within an alternate reality segment.

In reaction to fan requests, the producers decided to bring Tom Holland and Emily Blunt on board the Marvel Cinematic Universe, casting them as Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, also known as Sue Storm, respectively, in this movie.

Marvel Studios chose Pedro Pascal, star of “The Last of Us,” over John Krasinski to play Mr. Fantastic in their new Fantastic Four film despite Krasinski’s strong desire for the role.

It’s possible that something comparable is happening in this situation. Some fans have suggested Cavill as a potential replacement for Jackman as Wolverine, but it’s likely that Kevin Feige has his own plans for the character.

Wolverine variants montage explained

While Cavill may garner the most interest, there are other notable Wolverine versions in this series worth mentioning. Here’s a quick rundown:

  • First appearance Wolverine: A version based on Wolverine’s debut in The Incredible Hulk #180/181, who is fighting the enormous green rage monster just as he did in that original comic. Alas, Hulk is only seen from behind, so there’s no cameo from Mark Ruffalo. If you like this, check out the animated film Hulk vs Wolverine for more.
  • Age of Apocalypse Wolverine: An unkempt Wolverine variant inspired by the 1990s comic book event Age of Apocalypse, in which Professor X’s son David Haller (aka Legion) travels back in time and inadvertently kills his father. This allows the powerful villain known as Apocalypse to conquer the Earth.
  • Patch Wolverine: A variant of Wolverine who wears an eyepatch and is known to frequent the casinos of Madripoor – a dangerous place that made its MCU debut in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Logan first used the Patch alias in the 1980s, and it has recurred in the pages of X-Men comics ever since.
  • Old Man Logan: While 2017’s Logan movie was an interpretation of the acclaimed Old Man Logan storyline, this sequence sees a more direct translation from comic book panel to screen – complete with cowboy hat.
  • “Short king” (comic accurate) Wolverine: This inclusion appeases fans who have long argued that Hugh Jackman (6ft 2in) is too tall to play the canonically short Logan (5ft 3in). The film digitally imposes Jackman’s face on a much smaller body and, admittedly, it does look a little daft.

Why did Henry Cavill lose Superman?

Behind the scenes of Cavill’s departure from Superman, there seems to be some ambiguity. It looks like there was a misunderstanding or miscommunication among Cavill, Warner Bros executives, and Dwayne Johnson.

In 2022, the two film actors worked together on the production of “Black Adam.” Johnson had frequently mentioned that this project would shift the balance of power within the DC universe, but unfortunately, it failed to impress both critics and financially.

Due to this, Cavill’s surprise appearance in the after-credits segment, intended to set up a Black Adam follow-up involving Superman, failed to materialize. Instead, Warner executives passed on the DC Universe leadership to James Gunn, who chose to pursue an entirely new direction.

Although the cameo was marketed as Henry Cavill’s triumphant comeback as Superman and potentially the start of an impressive new chapter for the character, it turned out to be his final performance wearing the cape.

In December 2022, the actor shared on Instagram: “Despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise, I won’t be coming back as Superman. The studio asked me to announce my return in October before they made their decision, which makes this news difficult, but such is life.”

“The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that.”

Fans of Cavill have expressed their disapproval over his replacement by David Corenswet in “Pearl,” believing he was unfairly let go. This viewpoint is also shared by the Deadpool character in the cameo, as depicted in the scene.

As a movie critic, I’ve grown accustomed to Reynolds’s character’s non-stop chatter, but he’s made it clear that he feels Marvel hasn’t given him the recognition he believes he deserves. The question remains, though, if Cavill is being seriously considered for a prolonged stint in Marvel’s franchise or if this is just another instance of Hollywood gossip.

Regarding the new Superman movie, Gunn expressed his preference by stating: “Instead of sticking with Cavill’s portrayal of Clark Kent, I ask: Who should I choose to play Superman in this film? And for me, it’s not Henry [Cavill] for this particular story.”

“Henry is a person I admire and believe has wonderful qualities. Unfortunately, I feel he’s being taken advantage of by many individuals, even from his previous workplace. However, it’s important to note that the superiority or strength you speak of does not belong to Henry.”

Deadpool & Wolverine is out now in cinemas.
