Disney Lorcana Reveals Shimmering Skies Set Championship Prize (Exclusive)

As a dedicated Disney Lorcana TCG player and avid collector, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the newest addition to our beloved game – the Mirabel Madrigal Set Championship prize card! The exquisite artwork of Mirabel standing proudly in front of her Casita is simply breathtaking, and the fact that she brings a massive 5 Lore when quested just adds to her allure.

Disney Lorcana’s upcoming prize card showcases an impressive new interpretation of Mirabel Madrigal from Encanto. Exclusively obtained by ComicBook, this is a sneak peek of the championship prize card for Shimmering Skies‘ expansion – an Enchanted card depicting Mirabel in front of her cherished Casita. The freshly unveiled Mirabel Madrigal – Family Gatherer card boasts an unprecedented amount of Lore, rewarding players with 5 Lore points each time she is played for a quest. However, the significant Lore bonus comes at a price: only those with five or more characters already in play may add this character to their game.

As an excited fan, I’d love to share that you have the opportunity to discover both editions of this card. The enchanted version will be awarded as a prize for the top 8 competitors in the Shimmering Skies championship tournaments taking place at local game stores. Meanwhile, the standard edition is displayed below for your perusal.

To gain insights into the process of selecting Set Championship cards in Ravensburger and the feedback received from the game’s organized play team concerning these championships, ComicBook interviewed Megan Hanson, the Global Organized Play Manager for Disney Lorcana TCG at Ravensburger North America.

“Does the ComicBook game have particular rules for deciding which card will be awarded as the Set Championship prize?”

Megan Hanson: When selecting a character card, we take into account several aspects. Typically, we aim to choose beloved Disney characters from each collection. Occasionally, we can connect the character to the set’s theme or storyline, as seen with Ursula in “Ursula’s Return.” However, our decision may also be based on appealing artwork, such as the new Mirabel card. We have already chosen the Set Championship cards for the upcoming sets, so fans should look forward to discovering which ones they are.

Several players have participated in various Set Championship tournaments in an attempt to obtain a full set of four Set Championship prize cards. Did the Organized Play team expect this trend?

Players seize every chance to exhibit their abilities. Some are drawn to the rewards of the game itself, such as the cards, while others find joy in the thrill of victory. Regardless of their reasons, they all share a common desire: to have as many chances to win as they can.

To meet the demand of players for obtaining desirable items, we are exploring methods to modify the prize structure at Set Championships. For the upcoming and current championships, we will distribute eight promo cards per event instead of the previous quantity. Furthermore, we have plans to implement additional changes in the following year.

If you’re a less experienced Magic: The Gathering player aiming to win a Set Championship tournament for your Mirabel-loving daughter who enjoys the Shimmering Skies set, what suggestions can I offer?

Hanson: Through consistent practice, you’ll achieve advancement. Similar to mastering any ability, the more you engage, the more knowledge you gain. Seek out individuals who are eager to improve and engage in numerous activities with them. I enjoy being around those who excel beyond me; it’s akin to leveling up in reality. Additionally, experiment with various decks. Discover interconnections and identify what suits you best while adhering to the current trend.

I ponder whether the Set Championships significantly shape the atmosphere for the larger Challenges scheduled to unfold towards the end of the year.

Hanson explains that Set Championships offer a peek into the exciting decks that could emerge in subsequent Challenge tournaments. As the initial stage of competitive play, they provide players with an opportunity to experience the thrill of competitive events and fine-tune their decks, all while avoiding the overwhelming presence of thousands of other competitors. This early competition serves as a catalyst, igniting the passion for the upcoming Challenge events.

Might Lorcana Organized Play host additional smaller-scale tournaments if the Set Championship format proves popular?

Hanson shares that they have numerous exciting plans and enhancements in store for the Organized Play Program, encompassing both competitive and social aspects. Further details will be disclosed shortly, so keep an eye out.

Beginning August 9th, Shimmering Skies will become available at local game stores. Meanwhile, mass retailers will stock the game from August 23rd onwards.
