As a huge fan of both Lady Gaga and the DC Universe, I’m absolutely thrilled to see the pop superstar stepping into the role of Harley Quinn in “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Gaga’s unique artistry and ability to fully immerse herself into her characters is no secret, and her commitment to portraying Harleen Quinzel authentically in this Todd Phillips-directed sequel is truly exciting.

I can’t help but get excited as I imagine Lady Gaga stepping into her role for “Joker: Folie à Deux.” In this Todd Phillips-directed sequel to “Joker,” I, as a fan, am thrilled to see the talented Oscar-winning actress and thirteen-time Grammy winner embody Harleen “Lee” Quinzel. An Arkham Asylum patient with an unusual fascination for Arthur Fleck, portrayed by the brilliant Joaquin Phoenix who won an Oscar for his role as Joker.

As Lady Gaga, the well-known stage name, I’m recognized for my performances. But in this movie, it’s different – I’m portraying a character named Lee. To fully embody this role, I put a great deal of effort into modifying my singing style to originate from Lee instead of myself as a performer.

In her experience, the renowned singer has acted in Phillips’ film “A Star Is Born” where singing is a significant part. However, the upcoming musical project from Phillips, the “Joker” sequel, presents a new challenge for her. She explained, “Instead of singing as a separate event, how do I seamlessly integrate music into the dialogue without it feeling forced or random?” This task was unlike anything she had encountered in her career before.

As someone who has closely followed the evolution of Harley Quinn’s character throughout various adaptations, I must admit that Gaga’s portrayal of the Harley in her new series stands out as uniquely different from any version we have seen before. While Arleen Sorkin’s Brooklyn-accented Harley was a compelling accomplice to the Joker in “Batman: The Animated Series,” and Margot Robbie’s portrayal in DCEU films captured the quirky and chaotic energy of the character, Gaga’s interpretation brings an entirely new layer to the table.

In her portrayal, there are elements that resonate with audiences, yet it’s primarily Lady Gaga’s unique take, as well as mine and Scott Silver’s, on the character. Harley Quin in the film bears resemblance to her comic book counterpart but has been shaped according to our vision. Much like how Charlie Manson had devoted followers, Harley elicits such devotion from certain individuals within the movie, despite her disturbing background.

The film “Joker: Folie à Deux” by DC, featuring Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Catherine Keener (“Get Out”), Zazie Beetz (“Deadpool 2”), and Harry Lawtey (“The Pale Blue Eye”), will be released exclusively in cinemas starting October 4th.
