Todd McFarlane Confirms “King Spawn” Is Working Title, Not Adapting That Comic (Exclusive)

As a long-time fan of Spawn and Todd McFarlane‘s work, I’m thrilled to see that the highly anticipated movie adaptation is making progress with the reveal of a new King Spawn. The name change sets this project apart from previous attempts and signals that we’re in for something fresh and unique.

The “Spawn” movie project is making progress, albeit slowly. Recently, a significant advancement was made with the unveiling of a new “King Spawn.” During an interview before San Diego Comic-Con, creator Todd McFarlane shared that this isn’t the final title and is merely a working one. He also clarified that the film doesn’t follow the comic series with the same name. McFarlane believes that “King Spawn” distinguishes the project from previous iterations, so there’s a possibility that the movie will bear this or a similar title upon its release in theaters.

King Spawn

McFarlane explained that when asked if the new series was derived from the King Spawn comic books, he initially denied it. However, he revealed that “Spawn” could be just a temporary title. He shared his rationale by stating that using the same name as the old series might give an impression of a reboot and repetition. Therefore, they came up with a different working title to distinguish their new interpretation internally. McFarlane added that this title may not remain final, and they would need to go through necessary clearances before making any definitive decisions.

The Comic Series

In May 2022, King Spawn made his first appearance with a storyline revolving around a prophecy that saw Spawn taking over as ruler of Hell. He gained authority over the Court of Priests and returned to New York. However, it wasn’t long before Spawn discovered he had been manipulated and that New York was in peril. King Spawn’s series is ongoing and its fifth volume will be released in September. Here’s a description for King Spawn Vol. 1:

When a notoriously wicked being from Hell is freed once more, Spawn pursues the leads that draw him into an ambush. Yet, what motivates Kincaid to have Spawn assume the role as ruler of Hell, and what implications does the “King Spawn” prophecy hold?

The Script

Regarding the movie, McFarlane expressed great confidence in bringing Spawn to life on the big screen recently. In a past conversation with ComicBook, he shared details about the script’s progress. McFarlane is thrilled with Scott Silver’s work and looks forward to the story’s climax and its implications for the sequel.

McFarlane explained, “The writers aren’t completely content with the script they’ve written, which is a common feeling among creative individuals. So they’re undergoing an extensive revision and rewrite process. I recently spoke with Scott Silver, who’s overseeing the project and also penned Joker and Joker 2. Our goal is to complete this soon so we can present it to studios before the launch of Joker 2 in October.”

I’ve had the pleasure of observing an extraordinary individual who speaks with such passion and conviction during conversations that one cannot help but be captivated by his words. His dedication to his craft is unparalleled, as he pours himself entirely into every project, refusing to settle for mediocrity or follow the beaten path.

I’m really looking forward to the new Spawn movie! Feel free to join me in discussing all things comic books. You can find me sharing my thoughts on Threads and Twitter @mattaguilarcb.
