As a long-time fan of EastEnders, I’ve seen my fair share of twists and turns in Walford. But none have left me quite as intrigued as Reiss Colwell’s current predicament. Having taken the drastic step of ending his comatose wife Debbie’s life, Reiss is now faced with a mountain of guilt and the imminent arrival of Debbie’s parents.
It’s safe to say that EastEnders‘ Reiss Colwell (played by Jonny Freeman) is in a bit of a pickle.
After killing his unconscious wife, Debbie, Reiss is harboring a massive secret. However, as the weight of his deed begins to burden him, keeping this hidden truth will progressively become more challenging.
The following week, Debbie’s parents’ visit adds to the already heavy grief I feel over her passing.
What they weren’t expecting, however, was meeting Sonia and finding out he’s Reiss’s girlfriend!
Dissecting the potential implications of their daughter’s sudden death is bound to cause controversy among them, stirring up debate and uncertainty.
The BBC soap opera “EastEnders” introduces Nichola McAuliffe as the character Brenda Collins and Michael Bertenshaw portraying Hugh Collins, forming Debbie’s new on-screen parents.
Nicola McAuliffe is well-recognized for portraying Sheila Sabatini in the British hospital sitcom “Surgical Spirit” on ITV. Additionally, she has received an Olivier Award for her exceptional performances in the stage production of “Kiss Me, Kate.”
So, how will Reiss get out of this one?
He expressed: “It feels more ominous, yet our goal on soaps is to depict authentic reality. Humans act diversely in various situations.”
As a film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: “Instead of the ominous Reiss we knew before, the new circumstances have shaped him into a character making errors in an attempt to escape them.”
When someone is under immense pressure, making even a small error can lead to a chain reaction of events. It appears that this might be the case for Reiss.
Instead of having a hidden, negative side, I believe the fundamental nature of the character remains the same, but the situations they’re facing have become more complex.
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
