Video Game Actors Vote to Strike Over AI Concerns

As a dedicated gamer and long-time supporter of fair labor practices, I can’t help but feel a sense of solidarity with SAG-AFTRA video game actors as they embark on this historic strike. The announcement came after more than a year and a half of negotiations, during which the actors sought fair compensation and protections, particularly in regards to the use of AI and video games.

SAG-AFTRA actors involved in video game production have announced a strike starting from July 26th. After over a year and half of negotiations, they feel the need to take this action in order to secure reasonable compensation and protections, particularly with regards to the use of artificial intelligence and video games. Key points of contention include how AI is utilized within the industry and decision-making processes surrounding its implementation.

With an almost completely agreed-upon vote of 98.32%, SAG-AFTRA members decided to go on strike, as stated in their announcement. The leading negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, released a statement bringing attention to the concerns of SAG-AFTRA’s video game actors regarding the use of AI. Specifically, they are objecting to how voices and likenesses will be employed in upcoming projects, an issue that has gained traction in other industries like movies and animation as well.

“According to Crabtree-Ireland, the gaming industry rakes in billions of dollars each year thanks to innovative game creators. Among them are SAG-AFTRA members who breathe life into iconic game characters. These performers merit and request the same essential protections as their counterparts in film, TV, streaming, and music: reasonable compensation and approval for the use of their likenesses by A.I. It’s surprising that video game companies haven’t taken note of last year’s events – our members won’t hesitate to fight for fair and balanced treatment regarding A.I., and the public is behind us.”

On SAG-AFTRA’s website, you can utilize the search feature to find out if specific games are impacted by the ongoing strike. While some of these games may have already been released, it is important to note that many receive regular updates and additional content in the form of DLC. As a result, the strike could potentially influence both newly announced titles and currently available ones. Notable companies involved in the negotiations include Activision, Electronic Arts, Insomniac Games, Take-Two, and Warner Bros. Games.

At present, it’s uncertain whether or to what extent this situation will influence current and future projects. However, we anticipate receiving clearer information from the developers and SAG-AFTRA in due course as they provide further updates.
