As a die-hard wrestling fan, I can’t help but feel a deep connection to CM Punk‘s journey in professional wrestling. The moment he made his triumphant return to the ring in AEW after a long hiatus, I was on the edge of my seat. And it all started with a nod to Darby Allin, the young, daring star who inspired him to come back.
Before making history with his WWE comeback in 2021, CM Punk had already returned to pro wrestling by signing with AEW that year. For years, he’s acknowledged Darby Allin as the person who inspired him to step back into a wrestling ring. For his first match since leaving WWE in 2014, Punk focused on up-and-coming star Darby Allin. Their encounter took place during AEW’s “All Out” event in Chicago, where Punk grew up, and significantly boosted Allin’s career trajectory.
Last summer marked the conclusion of Punk’s tenure in AEW, after enduring numerous conflicts for several months prior. His final recorded bout took place at AEW All In, where he went up against Samoa Joe for the “Real World Championship.” However, Punk expressed his intention to leave the company much earlier, even before this encounter. Despite winning the match and raising his finger in victory, Punk exited the event following the disagreement. A heated backstage argument with Jack Perry ultimately led to Punk’s termination from the organization.
CM Punk Discusses His Favorite Match in AEW
After leaving AEW, Punk seldom discusses the company but frequently praises several of its talents, such as Allin. When asked about his favorite AEW match, he swiftly referred to his first pay-per-view encounter with Darby. In an interview with Denise Salcedo of Instinct Culture at San Diego Comic-Con, Punk expressed, “I consider that a significant moment for Darby. Being a straight-edge guy, I was the one who drew CM Punk back into wrestling, and we had our first match after a long break. That will always be my top pick because I believe Darby is gifted and it was an honor to perform alongside him. Our story was well-told.”
I, as a passionate gamer and avid WWE fan, am thrilled to share that next weekend, Punk is set to make his comeback at the SummerSlam event. It’s been quite some time since his last appearance in January, following an unfortunate injury during the Royal Rumble. Despite my strong desire to see him finish the match, he was forced to take a break and focus on healing.
