As a long-time fan of Stranger Things, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia as we approach the final season of this beloved show. The Duffer Brothers’ tease of a fast-paced and cinematic storyline has me on the edge of my seat, eager to see how our favorite Hawkins residents will navigate the aftermath of the Upside Down merging with the regular world.
For fans of Stranger Things, get ready for one final journey into the Upside Down: Production on season 5 is currently over halfway complete!
I’ve been eagerly anticipating the filming of the fifth and last season of Stranger Things. It started back in January, and based on a recent behind-the-scenes sneak peek from Netflix, things are moving along swiftly.
The Duffer Brothers and Netflix announced three new additions to the Stranger Things cast in a mid-production video update. They also gave glimpses of Terminator actress Linda Hamilton filming and images of the original cast members.
As a long-time fan of the hit Netflix series, I’m beyond excited for the upcoming fifth season of “Stranger Things.” Having followed the thrilling adventures of the California gang since the first episode, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and apprehension as we approach the final installment.
Here’s everything we know so far about Stranger Things season 5!
Stranger Things season 5 release date speculation
Based on information from Dextero, the exact release date for “Stranger Things” is not known at this time. However, during Netflix’s Q2 2024 Earnings Interview, it was confirmed that the show will be released in the year 2025.
As an admirer, I can tell you that it’s no secret to fans how extensive the production process is for this show. Given the size and complexity of each episode, it’s only natural that it takes a considerable amount of time to bring them to life. With half of the production already underway, a reasonable assumption would be that we can expect season 5 to drop by spring 2025.
As someone who has spent years following and admiring the hard work and dedication of the cast and crew behind our favorite show, I can hardly contain my excitement as we reach the midpoint of filming the final season! It’s been an incredible journey so far, filled with long hours, set builds, costume fittings, and table reads that have left me on the edge of my seat. And now, as a loyal fan, I feel honored to be given a sneak peek into what lies ahead. The anticipation is palpable both behind and in front of the camera, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds. So let’s keep pushing forward, team, and make these final episodes something truly special!

Production on the film project started in Atlanta, Georgia, back in January 2024. The Duffer Brothers officially announced the beginning of filming with a cast photo, which is displayed below for your reference.
Max Mayfield’s picture features Sadie Sink, indicating that her character will appear again in the show following the cliffhanger ending of season 4.
The start of filming, originally planned for June 2023, was postponed as a result of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Fortunately, these labor disputes have now been settled.
The release pattern for the new season remains uncertain. Previously, seasons 1 through 3 were made available with all their episodes at once. In contrast, season 4 was divided into two volumes, with the first volume offering seven episodes and the second volume providing the remaining two.
Whether season 5 sticks with this new split model, we’ll have to wait and see.
Instead: We have some exciting Stranger Things-themed productions coming up to keep fans satisfied, such as the current West End play, The First Shadow.
How many episodes will there be in Stranger Things season 5?
Stranger Things season 5 will consist of eight episodes.
As a dedicated fan of a particular TV show, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the upcoming season. With each new announcement, my excitement builds. However, we still don’t have all the episode titles yet. But, just recently, we were given a tantalizing glimpse into what’s to come: the first episode will be titled “The Crawl.”
As a movie buff, I’m excited to share that Maya Hawke, the talented actress who brings Robin Buckley to life in the show, has given us a sneak peek into the future with her hints about the upcoming “episodes as long as movies.”
In an interview for Podcrushed, the executive mentioned that Matt and Ross Duffer, our showrunners, are deeply committed to the production’s writing process and take great care in ensuring its quality.
Each season requires a significant amount of time to write and film, equating to approximately eight full-length films in production. Consequently, the episodes themselves are extended in length.
In Season 5, we’ll see a leap forward in time to reflect the aging of our younger cast members. This way, the on-screen ages of the characters will match up with their real-life actors.
In an interview I recently read in Variety, the executive producer Shawn Levy shared that our team is dedicated to exploring every possible solution to help the actors appear more youthful on screen. Some have speculated that we may employ advanced digital techniques, such as de-aging technology, to accomplish this goal.
Instead, Levy clarified to Deadline that he was taken aback by how far-reaching one statement he made on the topic had become, explaining, “No, I wasn’t expecting that single comment to spread as it did.”
As a film enthusiast, I can assure you, we’ve got this under control for our show. Our exceptional cast brings these vibrant characters, masterfully crafted by the Duffers, to life with every scene. I have full faith that everyone will jump back into their roles effortlessly.
Stranger Things season 5 cast
Since the Duffer Brothers shared a photo of the entire cast during production, we have some clue about which actors will be returning for more scenes.
Based on my extensive experience in both theater and media production, I believe that sharing a complete cast list is essential for transparency and excitement. As someone who has worked behind the scenes, I can attest to the importance of having all the pieces in place before starting a project. The inclusion of newcomers adds an element of freshness and anticipation, making it even more intriguing for audiences.
- Noah Schnapp as Will Byers
- Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers
- David Harbour as Jim Hopper
- Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven/Jane Hopper
- Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler
- Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson
- Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair
- Sadie Sink as Max Mayfield
- Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler
- Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers
- Joe Keery as Steve Harrington
- Maya Hawke as Robin Buckley
- Brett Gelman as Murray Bauman
- Priah Ferguson as Erica Sinclair
- Paul Reiser as Dr Sam Owens
- Jamie Campbell Bower as Peter Ballard/Henry Creel/One/Vecna
- Cara Buono as Karen Wheeler
- Gabriella Pizzolo as Susie
- Linda Hamilton as TBC
- Nell Fisher as TBC
- Jake Connelly as TBC
- Alex Breaux as TBC
Certainly, Stranger Things wouldn’t feel like itself without the presence of our “core quartet.” Behind-the-scenes footage from filming hints at additional sequences featuring the four of them reunited.
Levy also teased that there will be “big tears, lots of them” in the final outing – so be prepared!
As a new addition to the roster, I, Linda Hamilton, shared my excitement about being cast during the TUDUM fan event. During that moment, I jokingly mentioned, “I’ll have to figure out how to be both an actress and a fangirl at once. It’s going to be quite a challenge!”
Lately, Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly, and Alex Breaux have joined the cast for season 5, but details about their characters remain undisclosed.
He expressed his belief that the character has an excellent starting point, a captivating development, and a satisfying conclusion.
As a devoted moviegoer and an actor myself, I’ve always yearned for characters with captivating arcs. The thought of reuniting with the wonderful cast for another season was enticing, but ultimately, I believe the creators delivered a stunning conclusion for a masterfully crafted character.
Quinn has dropped hints suggesting Eddie might reappear in some capacity; therefore, there’s a chance we may see the guitar legend once more. We aren’t closing any doors yet.
In other parts of the story, it appears that the popular character played by Eduardo Franco, Argyle, will not make a comeback although he survived up to season 4.
In the fourth season, Argyle emerged as a valuable ally to Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton). He played a pivotal role in that season by saving Jonathan, Will (Noah Schnapp), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), and Agent Harmon (Ira Amyx) at crucial moments. Furthermore, he supported Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) in her battle against Vecna.
In response to being queried about his involvement in the last season, he spoke with Steve Varley on The Steve Varley Show: “I’m flattered by the interest, but unfortunately, I haven’t received a call. So I believe my role has come to an end.”
From a positive perspective, there’s reason to be optimistic about Will’s situation now, as Schnapp hinted at a “beautiful” conclusion for his character.
“I’m deeply enthusiastic about what lies ahead, and I believe this season brilliantly developed Will’s character. The creators handled all necessary elements superbly. The way they concluded the series, focusing on Will, seems fitting since that’s where it all began.”
What will Stranger Things season 5 be about?
In simpler terms, The fifth season of Stranger Things is expected to feature the grand finale for Hawkins, picking up where the previous season left off with a significant cliffhanger. However, the specifics of this final battle remain uncertain, though we do have some hints.
When Season 5 was initially unveiled, the Duffer Brothers revealed in a statement that they had mapped out the “overarching narrative” as far back as seven years ago. The upcoming fifth installment is expected to bring this long-planned storyline to its conclusion.
In a subsequent conversation with SFX, they acknowledged that the ending aligns with their initial plan, yet it now presents as more intriguing and thrilling than initially anticipated by both them and Ross.
“They expressed that they were certain about the ending. While it’s possible for it to shift, they believed it was unlikely due to its fitting and seemingly predestined nature. Once conceived, it struck them as the only plausible conclusion.”
The upcoming season will incorporate elements from the West End production, “The First Shadow,” providing insights into Henry Creel/Vecna’s past.
Last year on Stranger Things Day, the Duffer brothers shared the initial script line, giving us a clear start to the show. Brace yourselves, as this opening promises to send shivers down your spine.
“Nighttime. The howl of chilly winds. Sighing trees. Adding to the scene, a child’s melodious humming of a well-known tune,” is one way to paraphrase this passage.
After the scene was revealed, numerous theories about which song the script might be alluding to have surfed the web.
In simpler terms, some people think that if Max (Sadie Sink) had been in a different world, Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” might have prevented her from falling victim to Vecna and instead kept her alive.
An alternate interpretation is preferring Will’s choice from Season 1: The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go.”
Additionally, Ross Duffer discussed with The Wrap the anticipated emotional depth of the show. He shared that Netflix was receptive when the creators presented their vision for the series’ finale.
“To put it another way, it was an extremely challenging experience. And unfortunately, that’s how the tale concluded. Even some executives, who had always kept their emotions in check, were moved to tears. The scene was truly extraordinary.”
We also know that in all likelihood, season 5 will include a leap forward in time. Ross Duffer mentioned this to TVLine, stating, “I’m sure we will do a time jump…. Due to logistical challenges, we hadn’t been able to shoot seasons 4 and 5 back-to-back. So these are topics we’ll talk about with our writers as we begin the writing process.”
During a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, David Harbour of Stranger Things shared his thoughts on the scripts they’ve been receiving before the writers’ strike. He expressed that these scripts, as always, are terrific and the Duffer Brothers, who are currently on strike, continue to exceed expectations with their writing.
Regarding the final episode of season 5, he commented: “The production process for this one is quite a feat. With larger-than-ever sets and more complex script elements, it surpasses anything we’ve tackled before.”
Harbour shared that the next installment will continue not long after the finale of season 4, stating, “Following the cliffhanger ending of season 4, where we stood on a hill overlooking the ruins of ash, smoke, and fires, we’ll begin our story somewhere after that point. So picture the world as having undergone significant changes.”
In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast conducted by Josh Horowitz, the Duffer Brothers hinted at a fast-moving plot for the last season of Stranger Things. This upcoming phase will be set in Hawkins and will continue from the cliffhanger finish of season 4, during which The Upside Down invaded the normal world.
Duffer stated, “For the first time, we won’t conclude all storylines by the end of season 4. Therefore, expect an accelerated pace with characters actively engaged from the get-go.”
“I believe having a clear objective and motivation will set aside a few hours, making this upcoming season unique and distinct.”
Simultaneously, Levy assured fans that the last installment of the popular series would be “just as grand as any major film production.”
In an interview with Total Film, he commented, “It’s impossible to continue with season 4 without significantly increasing the scope and complexity. This isn’t just television; it’s epic filmmaking in a serialized format.”
Regarding season 5, Wolfhard shared that the cast is still figuring out how the story will conclude, but expressed his hope that each character will get a satisfactory resolution.
In an interview with Access Online, he expressed his heartfelt desire for a satisfying conclusion reminiscent of “The Lord of the Rings” series. Having only read up to the second-to-last episode, we’re all eagerly anticipating the final installment.
As a devoted fan of Stranger Things, I can tell you that in an exciting revelation, Wolfhard previously shared that this new season will provide answers to an enormous number of questions we’ve had about the show’s rich lore and intricate world-building.
He added: “I believe many fans will be pleased… Since it’s the final season, we aim to return to the core elements that made our show unique and engaging in the beginning. We want to revive those special dynamics.”
We can’t wait to find out more!
Is there a trailer for Stranger Things season 5?
At present, a lengthy trailer for Stranger Things season 5 has not been released. However, we’ll be sure to provide an update on this page once we receive more information or when the trailer is made public.
We’ve given you a sneak peek, or a preview, from the set (feel free to watch it at the top of this page). This was shared to mark the milestone of having completed half of the filming.
In addition, the teaser not only introduces the fresh new faces, but also features the veteran cast reminiscing about the last ten years of working on Stranger Things.
Strolling leisurely through the impressive costume collection, Sink remarked, “We’re cherishing each moment.”
During this time, Campbell-Bower, who portrays Vecna, is once again found in the make-up room. He shares, “Season 4 was substantial. For sure, Season 5 seems even more expansive.”
As a dedicated fan, I was thrilled to hear Mike actor Finn Wolfhard’s recent confirmation that there will be additional scenes featuring the original four of us: Will (Noah Schnapp), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and myself. Following Will’s return to Hawkins, this is wonderful news for us fans!
