The Handmaid’s Tale season 6: Release date speculation, cast and latest news

As a longtime fan of The Handmaid’s Tale, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation as we approach the final season. Having followed June’s journey since the first episode, I’ve grown attached to her story and the world of Gilead. The thought of saying goodbye to this captivating and harrowing series is bittersweet.

Exciting news about additional cast members for The Handmaid’s Tale’s sixth season, which marks the series finale.

I’ve been following the show since its first season, cheering on Ever Carradine as Naomi. Excitingly, her role has been promoted to series regular for the last season. Now, I can’t wait to find out how her character will take center stage. The anticipation is building!

As a longtime fan of both Josh Charles and Elisabeth Moss, I’m absolutely thrilled to hear that they will be reuniting on the small screen once again. Having watched them bring their characters to life in “The Veil,” I can only imagine the chemistry and magic they will create together in this new project. Their reunion is not just a delight for fans, but also a testament to their undeniable talent and versatility as actors. I’m eagerly anticipating the premiere of season 6 and the opportunity to witness their collaboration once more.

As a movie buff, I can’t wait to find out more about the part this intriguing actor is playing in the last installment of my favorite dystopian series. However, the specifics of his role and the thrilling plot twists of the finale are still shrouded in mystery.

We are aware that Moss will direct four episodes in the upcoming season. She previously shared with TVLine that the final season is grand and unpredictable, taking viewers to various unexpected destinations throughout.

In a past interview with Business Insider, Moss expressed that season 6 is specifically designed for devoted fans. “We’re creating this sixth season with our loyal viewers in mind,” he added.

Creator Bruce Miller hasn’t had his fill of Margaret Atwood’s literature just yet. As reported by Deadline, a new series based on her latest novel “The Testaments” is under active development. This work is set six years after the conclusion of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

Before reaching that point, however, we still have the last season of this series left to complete. Here’s what you should know.

*Spoilers ahead for The Handmaids Tale season 5*

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 release date speculation: When could it air?

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6: Release date speculation, cast and latest news

As a devoted moviegoer and fan of The Handmaid’s Tale, I’ve faced some frustrations due to the SAG-AFTRA writers’ strike causing production delays for the show’s sixth season. But, I’m thrilled to share that we finally have an confirmed release date to look forward to!

In a conversation with Deadline, Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich shared that the production of Hulu’s sixth season will begin this coming summer (2024), aiming for a release in the year 2025.

The series airs on Channel 4 and Prime Video in the UK, and Hulu in the US.

Will The Handmaid’s Tale end with season 6?

Unfortunately, yes.

The final season may not lack excitement despite coming to an end. According to an interview with TVLine, Moss described it as “pretty wild” and stated that it definitely carries the energy of a finale.

In September 2022, before the debut of season 5, it was announced that season 6 would proceed and mark the end of the series.

“We’ve been privileged to share the remarkable tale of Margaret Atwood’s pioneering novel and its chilling contemporary relevance with audiences, and we’re excited to present the sixth and concluding season of The Handmaid’s Tale in a press statement, Bruce Miller added.”

“We’re thankful to Hulu and MGM for giving us the chance to share this story, which sadly remains just as important today as when it first began. And we’re amazed by our devoted fans who have stood by us throughout this journey, enabling us to reach this milestone.”

When we embarked on this journey in the first season, we were clueless. By the second season, we regained our identity. In the third season, we broke free from our shackles. In the fourth season, we came together in faith. And in the fifth season, prepare to witness how some transgressions remain unforgiven.

As a longtime fan of the show, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness and excitement all at once as I reflect on the upcoming sixth season, which will mark the end of an era for us viewers. Over the years, this show has brought so much joy, intrigue, and connection into my life, and I’ve grown to love the characters as if they were part of my own family.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 cast news: Who could return?

Elisabeth Moss is set to reprise her role as the leading character in The Handmaid’s Tale’s upcoming season, despite limited information being released about the plot and casting.

We’d expect the following faces to all return for season 6:

  • Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne
  • Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy Waterford
  • Madeline Brewer as Janine
  • Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia
  • O-T Fagbenle as Luke
  • Max Minghella as Nick
  • Samira Wiley as Moira
  • Bradley Whitford as Commander Lawrence
  • Amanda Brugel as Rita
  • Sam Jaeger as Mark Tuello
  • Ever Carradine as Naomi Lawrence (née Putnam)
  • Josh Charles as TBC

In the final season, Ever Carradine, who portrays Naomi Putnam – the mother of Janine’s baby and former wife of Commander Putnam, now Commander Lawrence – has been upgraded to a regular cast member.

Regarding Emily (Alexis Bledel), she contemplated going back to Gilead with the intention of avenging the harm inflicted upon herself and other women under the regime’s rule. However, would she be able to make this journey?

According to Miller’s statement to Entertainment Tonet, the character wasn’t considered at the final stage of her storyline by us. He further mentioned that the plotline for this character still held an “open-ended” possibility.

McKenna Grace, the actress portraying Esther, Young Commander Keyes’ spouse, has shared with Screen Rant her concerns over Esther’s fate in season 6.

She admitted, “I’m genuinely scared,” expressing her uncertainty about the upcoming events and their potential consequences. Despite her willingness to comply, fear still gripped her.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t predict what will unfold in this series. The uncertainty keeps me on the edge of my seat, and I’m eagerly anticipating what new adventures Esther has in store for us this season.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 plot: What could happen?

Moss told Business Insider that she knows how the series wraps up.

She remarked, “I’ve had a premonition about the outcome for some time now, and given that, I’m apprehensive about speaking up, fearing I might unintentionally utter something incorrect or hurtful.”

In an interview about the last season, Miller expressed his desire for it to be strong and well-executed. Drawing from his observations of how other series have concluded, he intends to apply those valuable lessons.

Based on my experience as a dedicated and passionate screenwriter, I firmly believe that every episode and scene should be well-crafted and solid to ensure a cohesive and engaging storyline. I understand that this might seem like an obvious goal, but it’s amazing how often small details can slip through the cracks during production.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6: Release date speculation, cast and latest news

Towards the close of season 5, June and Serena found themselves seated next to each other on a train bound for Vancouver, with plans to potentially continue their journey towards Hawaii. This encounter brings up intriguing possibilities about how their relationship will develop in future instalments. Will they join forces and most significantly, manage to overthrow Gilead?

As I watched Serena and June’s stories unfold on screen, it felt almost inevitable that their paths would cross. They were both trying to escape anonymously from the crowded streets of Toronto. What choices did they have but to collide?

Before I believed that Serena would reach this point, I had assumed that June would get here instead. It seemed as if they weren’t racing towards one another, but rather, both heading towards the same destination.

Although June is now unbound, Luke has been apprehended for surrendering himself to protect her and Nichole. His fate remains uncertain as he attempts to break free and reunite with June in their rebellion against the oppressive government.

Nick got into trouble as well for attacking Commander Lawrence, and his wife, who is expecting a baby, has decided to keep her distance from him.

According to Miller’s statement to Entertainment Weekly, with Nick, the issue is that he attempts to avoid getting into trouble. Unfortunately, he finds himself drawn back towards mischief by June.

Based on my own experiences and observations of romantic relationships, I believe that this particular Nick and June season is the most captivating one due to their persistent struggle to deny their feelings for each other. Despite their best efforts to convince themselves otherwise, they are utterly enamored and can’t help but think about one another constantly. By the end, they have failed in their attempts to resist their love, and it only serves to deepen their connection. This rollercoaster of emotions makes for a compelling narrative that resonates with many of us who have experienced the complexities of love and relationships.

And we can’t forget Janine, who has been taken by The Eyes, leaving Aunt Lydia heartbroken.

Miller explained to EW that Janine is drawing upon June’s inner strengths. However, being selected by “The Eyes” may lead to unwelcome outcomes. For a long time, The Eyes have desired Janine to be productive and replicate, and if she fails to do so at the Red Centre, they will relocate her forcefully elsewhere.

I’ve heard that it’s not uncommon for things to take an unexpected turn here, and there’s always a risk of getting caught up in unwanted situations, even something as severe as being pulled out and shot in broad daylight on the street. It’s important to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings in such places.
