As a long-time fan of Chicago Fire, I’m feeling a mix of emotions as I reflect on the recent news about the upcoming season. The departure of Boden, my all-time favorite character, after being dumped at the altar and then finding love across the aisle with Matt Casey in the last episode, has left me both sad and intrigued.
Caution: The following article reveals key plot points from Chicago Fire’s season 12 finale, which has not yet been broadcasted in the UK.
If you currently enjoy an American procedural drama series, your days are filled with excitement as new seasons premiere, old favorites get renewed, or the final episodes unfold with dramatic conclusions.
The One Chicago universe, filled with drama, remains unchallenged as NBC has renewed all three shows – Chicago Med, Chicago PD, and Chicago Fire. This means Chicago Fire will return for its 13th season starting in September, joining the other series in the franchise on our TV screens.
In the latest US season, Eamonn Walker said goodbye to his role as Wallace Boden on the show. It was revealed earlier this month that Walker would be reducing his involvement in the series, possibly returning as a guest star at a later time.
In intriguing developments, Dermot Mulroney takes over as the new fire chief Dom Pascal in season 13’s cast. However, no release date has been announced yet for this upcoming installment.

Chicago Fire season 13 release date speculation
The confirmed date for the debut of Chicago Fire’s thirteenth season in the United States is September 25, 2023. At 9 PM on NBC, you can watch this new episode every Wednesday.
It will hold that Wednesday night slot with Chicago Med season 10 and Chicago PD season 12.
Regarding the UK launch, it’s likely that it will align with the pattern of its past seasons and emerge a few months afterwards in the US market. UK viewers can then access it on Sky Witness and NOW streaming platforms.
Chicago Fire season 13 cast: Who will return?
Regarding those not coming back for the upcoming season, a significant change will be observed as Eamonn Walker has relinquished his regular role as fire chief Wallace Boden.
For the past 12 seasons, Walker has been a consistent presence in the series. His absence will undoubtedly change the dynamic. However, since he’s now taken on the role of Deputy Commissioner, it’s likely that we’ll see him reappear in recurring roles in future episodes.
Dermot Mulroney is the latest addition to the cast, taking on the role of new fire chief Dom Pascal. According to Deadline, this character began his tenure with the Chicago Fire Department but has since spent the past decade in Miami. Officially, no information about Dom’s character has been disclosed yet.
I’ve come across many individuals in my professional experience, but none quite like Dom. He’s a naturally cheerful person who thrives under pressure, which is a rare find in today’s fast-paced world. His leadership style, however, sets him apart from the more well-known figures like Boden.
In the upcoming season 13, Kara Killmer’s character Sylvie Brett, who joined the show in season 3, will not make an appearance. According to Killmer herself, speaking to Deadline about her last episode in season 12, “This marks a fitting conclusion for Sylvie’s storyline. It’s a natural end and feels almost full circle.”
In simple terms, I’m greatly pleased with how the story unfolds where Sylvie arrives in Chicago as a jilted bride-to-be, having been left at the altar by her long-time sweetheart. Eventually, she sits next to Matt Casey, who becomes the love of her life, in the final episode.
I’m really pleased that her character has managed to complete her development, making her departure from the story feel fitting and harmonious. The timing seems almost perfect.
I was taken aback to learn that Rome Flynn, who joined the cast in season 12 as Jake Gibson and appeared in just a few episodes, has decided to part ways with the show. He expressed his regret over Gibson’s departure, so it seems unlikely that we’ll see him return for season 13.
Here are the other “Chicago Fire” cast members expected to be part of season 13:
- David Eigenberg as Lieutenant Christopher Herrmann
- Joe Minoso as Joe Cruz
- Miranda Rae Mayo as Lt Stella Kidd
- Daniel Kyri as Darren Ritter
- Hanako Greensmith as Violet Mikami
- Taylor Kinney as Kelly Severide
- Jocelyn Hudon as Lyla Novak
- Michael Bradway as Jack Damon
- Christian Stolte as Randall McHolland, aka Mouch
- Jake Lockett as Sam Carver
- Dermot Mulroney as Dom Pascal
What will happen in Chicago Fire season 13?
In Season 13 of Chicago Fire, Boden’s absence is bound to bring about a fresh and different vibe for the show.
In an interview with Deadline, showrunner Andrea Newman discussed the central theme of Change in the production of Season 12, explaining how this concept impacts both a firehouse and a tight-knit family like that of Firehouse 51.
I’ve learned from Boden that once you become a member of the 51, your connection to it never fades. That means Boden will always be an integral part of our group. It’s intriguing to ponder how each person reacts to new leadership, and the final episode brings unexpected turns that add even more complexity to the dynamic at 51. So buckle up, because we’re in for a wild ride.
In response to whether Boden’s absence marks a new phase for the series, Newman added, “We’ll have to wait and see. It hinges on Boden’s eventual whereabouts and the person occupying the Chief position.”
Fire fans should be prepared for the fact that whatever the original plan may be, it will likely become more complex, uneven, and passionate than anticipated. The outcome is certain to bring about significant disruption within the firehouse.
Just like past seasons, Chicago Fire’s 13th installment is expected to deliver edge-of-your-seat situations, introduce fresh faces, and present challenges for our valiant firefighter squad. Moreover, the season finale of season 12 left us with several significant cliffhangers, most notably when enigmatic newcomer Damon (Michael Bradway) made a shocking revelation.
Novak confided in me, Damon, that to succeed in our industry, one must be more open about who they are. So, he shocked me by revealing that his father was Benny Severide, making us half-brothers.
In the finale, elsewhere, Kelly confessed to Stella that he harbored a desire to begin a family. However, Stella appeared unenthusiastic about the idea.
Christian Stolte’s character Mouch announced that he would be attempting the lieutenant’s exam. The squad is undergoing significant changes, and the upcoming season 13 promises to deliver plenty of excitement and intrigue.
