The First Descendant's next major content update is now coming even earlier, and we got our first look at the new Descendants

What you need to know

  • The First Descendant continues to aggressively push out weekly updates, and the first including major content additions is coming even earlier than planned.
  • Nexon has announced that Update 5 is now arriving a day earlier on July 31, 2024, letting players access the new features sooner.
  • That includes two new Descendants, new Ultimate-class gear, Descendant and gear buffs, and even a new Intercept Battle against the Colossi boss Gluttony.
  • Nexon has also teased players with the first look at the new Descendants, Ultimate Valby and Luna (in an optional premium outfit).

As a dedicated player of The First Descendant, I’ve been eagerly anticipating Update 5 since the game’s release. The rapid-fire patches were exciting, but nothing compares to the major content additions that this update promises. So, you can imagine my delight when Nexon announced not only the arrival of new Descendants, Ultimate Valby and Luna, but also the fact that we’ll be getting access to these new features a day earlier than planned!

Nexon has yet to attempt preventing “The Thirst Descendant” from being adopted as the new name for The First Descendant, given the recent unveiling of Ultimate Valby and one of Luna’s premium costumes in this widely popular free-to-play MMORPG looter shooter. Players, who have been anxiously anticipating the first major content update after a series of quick patch releases, now have even less time to wait.

The First Descendant team at Nexon has made an unexpected announcement: Update 5, filled with fresh features and enhancements, will be available for download on Xbox, Windows PC, and PlayStation starting July 31, 2024 – one day ahead of the initially scheduled Aug. 1 release date. Developers seldom unveil games or updates prematurely, making this an enjoyable surprise for players. Additionally, Nexon shared a sneak peek of some exciting new content in the upcoming update. Let’s delve deeper into it.

Initially, Nexon introduced Ultimate Valby as one of the two new Descendants set to debut in Update 5. Valby has garnered significant attention due to her adaptable area-of-effect skills and effectiveness for farming. In her upgraded form, Ultimate Valby will feature enhanced defensive capabilities and unique Transcendent Modules for players to explore. Additionally, she underwent a redesign, which showcases a more exposing version of her previously form-fitting suit.

Players have the option to buy Ultimate Valby using real-life currency, or they can acquire her through in-game efforts, which may require extensive grinding and perseverance. It’s unclear how much more powerful Ultimate Valby will be compared to her regular version, but we do know that Valby is among the three Descendants receiving an enhancement with Update 5. In the upcoming release, crowd control experts Freyna, Blair, and Valby will all become stronger and more efficient at handling groups of Vulgus.

When it comes to discussing enhancements, Nexon is working on making several Ultimate Weapons more effective by boosting their critical hit rates and dealing greater damage or providing unique abilities. Fingers crossed that these upgrades will be clearer and less contentious than past modifications.

Moving forward, we introduce Luna. Despite some translation issues, this provides a bit more insight into Luna being a Descendant and showcases one of her high-end cosmetic options, which happens to be a bikini. Yes, The Thirst Descendant is indeed a valid title. While we do have some understanding of Luna’s role and abilities, she functions as a support-type Descendant, enhancing allies through musical capabilities. She will also offer opportunities for a more aggressive playstyle, but it remains to be seen what types of builds players will be able to create with her.

In the primary storyline of The First Descendant, Luna did contribute significantly. Consequently, it wasn’t a shock for players when she emerged as the initial new playable Descendant. With her sound-centric abilities, I’m intrigued to discover how effective Luna will be upon Update 5’s release.

In addition to the two fresh Descendants and their distinctive Modules, Update 5 introduces the Peace Mediator, a novel Hand Cannon Unique Weapon, and Arche Concretion, an ideal Unique Module for Descendants with a support role who are willing to sacrifice some attack power in favor of enhanced defense and assistance capabilities.

Nexon introduces the initial novel Colossus into the game, named Gluttony. In this Intercept Battle, players must strategically control Gluttony’s insatiable appetite and hunger, all while overcoming its formidable cooling systems. Overpowering Gluttony grants access to new Ultimate Weapons and components for players.

In Update 5 of The First Descendant, not only will there be unnamed enhancements and modifications, but also anticipated life-improvements and additional adjustments. I’m excited to discover what these changes bring. Furthermore, long-awaited cosmetics are set to debut in this update as well – these could be the ones teased during The First Descendant beta that haven’t been released in the game yet.

Regardless of the choice, The First Descendant’s Update 5 will be available to all players on July 31, 2024. This update will be distributed across Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5 platforms.
