As a longtime Marvel fan and avid follower of the MCU, I was beyond excited when the news broke about Deadpool & Wolverine bringing Chris Evans back to reprise his role as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, from the Fantastic Four films. The idea of merging these two worlds, with their unique humor and R-rated content, felt like a game-changer.
Since the announcement, the collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine was certain to offer a unique experience unlike any other Marvel Studios production. This project marked new territory for Marvel President Kevin Feige as it involved merging a franchise that originated at another studio into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, an accomplishment he had never achieved before. Additionally, this film would be unapologetically R-rated, breaking the MCU mold. Lead actor Ryan Reynolds heightened expectations when he persuaded Hugh Jackman to come out of Wolverine retirement for one final clawed appearance in Deadpool 3. With these details, it was evident that there would be variations in Deadpool and Wolverine, leading fans to speculate that actors from Marvel’s past could return for this multiverse journey.

Marvel Veteran Breaks Silence on Shock Deadpool Cameo
Oh captain, my captain Human Torch.
In an unexpected turn of events, Chris Evans, renowned for portraying Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, makes a surprising comeback to the small screen in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Previously, he donned the flames as Johnny Storm in “Fantastic Four” (2005) and its sequel “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” (2007). Although Evans has been firm about not wanting to disturb his Captain America legacy, he had hinted at being more inclined to revisit his role within the Fantastic Four franchise.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Evans shared that getting involved with “Deadpool & Wolverine” was as easy as replying to a text message from lead actor Ryan Reynolds.
“Evans was thrilled,” he shared. “His friend Ryan had texted him out of the blue, proposing a possible opportunity from two decades ago. ‘This could be a long shot,’ Ryan wrote, but Evans replied with an eager yes.”
I honestly believe that out of all the guys out there, Ryan is the one I would have gone the extra mile for. He’s got this unique charm, like the Midas touch, that makes everything he does shine. His self-awareness is almost supernatural, giving him an invincible edge. He’s always one step ahead, making the joke before the audience even has a chance to think of it. If you’re looking to reintroduce a character and need to find a way to make it feel fresh, Ryan’s humor makes the process effortless. With him on board, you instantly feel a sense of security.
In a new turn of events, Human Torch, portrayed by Evans, debuts in “The Void” to enlighten Deadpool and Wolverine about the power structure within the TVA’s wasteland. However, their encounter with Pyro, played by Aaron Stanford, results in a brief skirmish between the two flame-wielding characters. Later, they proceed to Cassandra Nova’s (Emma Corrin) hideout. Tragically, Human Torch meets his end at her hands. The post-credits scene unveils an extended version of their trek to Cassandra’s lair.
“I made a short trip for some filming sessions, which only took a few days, and then I left again,” Evans explained casually.
In more modern times, Evans wears the Human Torch outfit with a changed design compared to his old Fantastic Four costume from almost two decades ago. Instead of the “4” logo being positioned on his chestplate, it now sits centrally. Additionally, this new costume appears worn and devoid of vibrant colors.
Evans explained that in the early Marvel films, Johnny’s character wasn’t required to look perfect in his costume since he was supposed to be less polished. The production process for these movies was more rigid with numerous meetings and opinions. This time around, however, they took a more relaxed approach, acknowledging that they had already established the characters.
If things go as expected and there’s no unexpected return of Johnny Storm in “Avengers: Secret Wars,” this will be Evans’ final performance as the character. Next year, Marvel Studios plans to debut “The Fantastic Four,” marking their third attempt at bringing the team to life on the big screen. In this new adaptation, Joseph Quinn from “Stranger Things” is slated to take up the Torch as the Human Torch.
