As a long-time fan of the Yakuza series, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard about the upcoming Like a Dragon: Yakuza series on Amazon Prime Video. Having played every installment since the original release in 2005, I have grown attached to the characters and their stories, wondering how well this adaptation would capture the essence of the games.
At Comic-Con on July 26th in San Diego, viewers were given an initial glimpse of Prime Video’s upcoming Like a Dragon: Yakuza series through its debut teaser trailer. Set to release on October 24th, this will be the latest video game adaptation from the streaming platform, preceded by their successful and applauded Fallout series which premiered earlier in the year. The anticipation among fans of the original game franchises is high as they eagerly await seeing how their beloved games will be brought to life on screen, a question that has arisen frequently during post-panel interviews at Comic-Con.
Sega met with Masayoshi Yokoyama, the director of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and executive producer of the upcoming Prime Video series. He shared some insights on how the show stays true to the cherished characters while introducing fresh new ones for the adaptation. According to him, “Amazon has chosen Ryoma Takeuchi to play Kazuma Kiryu and Kento Kaku as Akira Nishikiyama.” Regarding the characters’ portrayals, he mentioned, “Although their interpretations differ from the original narrative, that’s what makes it exciting!”
Twenty years ago, we crafted a flawless version of Kazuma Kiryu. His character was complete and required no further additions. However, in this new drama adaptation, it’s clear that the portrayal of Kazuma Kiryu and his rival Akira Nishikiyama are not faithful to the game versions. Instead, Kento Kaku breathed life into a fresh and distinct take on Kazuma Kiryu’s character. Witnessing their captivating performances is an absolute must.
In addition to the main character and his opponent mentioned by Yokoyama, it’s important to note that new characters have been introduced for the Amazon Prime series. One particularly noteworthy female character is yet to be revealed, her acting ability and presence are said to be exceptional, leaving audiences in anticipation. The producer then reverted back to discussing the lead characters, but assured fans that they would soon learn about more cast members to come.
