Neighbours’ Lyn Scully star Janet Andrewartha dies, aged 72

As a dedicated cinephile and long-time fan of Australian soap operas, I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the talented and beloved Janet Andrewartha at the age of 72. Her impact on both the small and large screens in Australia will be profoundly felt for generations to come.

Australian actress Janet Andrewartha, recognized for portraying Lyn Scully in Neighbours, passed away at 72 years old.

On the tranquil day of July 26th, Andrewartha ended her earthly journey in Melbourne, surrounded by the comforting presence of her beloved daughters Eloise and Sarah.

On X, Neighbors’ official account posted: “We’re heartbroken to announce the sad demise of Janet Andrewartha, who played cherished character Lyn Scully on Ramsay Street. Her memory will be treasured. Our sympathies go out to Janet’s family and close ones during this difficult period.”

I discovered Andrewartha, played by Lyn, back in 1999 when she and her family, the Scullys, joined Neighbours. During my years of following the show closely, I developed a strong connection to her storyline, especially with Stefan Dennis’s character, Paul Robinson.

From 2006 up to 2008, she was a consistent cast member on the show. In 2008, she came back for a brief visit as a guest star. Then, in the same year, she re-joined the main cast. However, she departed once more in 2011. Subsequently, she resurrected her role for additional performances in 2016, 2017, and 2019.

Andrade was recognized not just for her role in Prisoner: Cell Block H as Rebecca Kean and Blue Heelers as Detective Bridget Ryan, but also for her contributions to theatre. More recently, she made an appearance on the TV show Fake this year.

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Janet Andrewartha, a remarkable actress and exceptional woman. As a fan and colleague, I had the privilege of knowing Jackie Woodburne from Neighbours, who shared my sentiments. She beautifully captured Janet’s talent and essence when she said, “Janet was not only one of the finest actors of her generation, but she also possessed an extraordinary spirit that touched everyone around her.”

For more than four decades, she was a devoted friend to me, full of passion for politics and insatiably curious. Her delightful quirks made her eccentrically charming, and she was consistently generous and brought joy with her fun-loving spirit. I will deeply miss her presence each day.

At the same time, Dennis expressed his sadness: “It’s so disappointing to no longer have Janet with us. As Jackie put it, she was not only an extraordinary actress but also delightful to collaborate with and be near. We’ll all cherish the memories of her presence.”

Yesterday, Colette Mann, a well-known actress represented by Sheila Canning, expressed her shock and sadness upon hearing the news about Janet’s passing. Her feelings align with Jackie’s description of Janet as brilliant yet unconventionally so, an cherished friend, and an exceptional colleague. Farewell, Ms. Janet, my dear friend.

Melanie Pearson, portrayed by Lucinda Cowden, recalled: “The first time I witnessed her on Prisoner, she shone brilliantly on the screen. Her remarkable talent kept captivating us through various intriguing and distinct characters. Farewell Janet.”
