SDCC 2024: ComicBook's Favorite Comic-Con Reveals

As a long-time comic book enthusiast and avid gamer, I couldn’t help but feel the excitement ripple through the air during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The energy was electric, with Hollywood studios leaving their mark on the event in grand fashion. With our team at ComicBook spread across the Convention Center and various headquarters, we eagerly shared our favorite announcements from the weekend.

San Diego Comic-Con, the largest comic convention on the globe, came to a close just as swiftly as it began. Previous conventions may have been more expansive in terms of announcements, but this year, Hollywood studios left a significant mark on the event throughout the weekend.

As a dedicated fan and part of team ComicBook, I had the privilege of being on site at the San Diego Convention Center, while my colleagues worked remotely from various ComicBook headquarters nationwide. Together, we poured over every announcement with great enthusiasm, and I’m excited to share with you which reveals truly stood out to us! Keep reading to discover our top picks.

Justice League Unlimited

As a longtime comic book enthusiast with a deep appreciation for dynamic duos that deliver electrifying stories, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard Mark Waid and Dan Mora were reuniting for more collaborative work beyond “World’s Finest” and “Batman and Robin: Year One.” Their creative synergy is nothing short of extraordinary, and their unique storytelling style has left an indelible mark on the comic book landscape.

Avengers: Doomsday

As a long-time fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I have to admit that the returns of the Russo Brothers and Robert Downey Jr. in their latest Avengers project left me utterly astonished. Their performances were nothing short of extraordinary, stealing the spotlight from anything else related to the Avengers franchise and becoming the talk of the town.

As a gamer and fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I was initially excited for “Avengers: Kang Dynasty” with Jonathan Majors set to reprise his role as Kang. However, due to Majors’ deep integration into the MCU as Kang, recasting the character proved to be a challenge. Yet, keeping him as the central figure of the franchise wasn’t an option either. To fill the void, Doctor Doom emerged as an iconic Marvel Comics character and a fitting successor as the MCU’s next major antagonist. With his extensive wealth and intellectual prowess, Doctor Doom could effectively orchestrate his multiversal conquest. Moreover, his arrogance and stage presence make him a compelling lead for a film series. This transition from Kang to Doctor Doom seamlessly propels the MCU towards Secret Wars while providing fans with a long-awaited character appearance. — Charlie Ridgely (Paraphrased)

Harrison Ford Hulks Out

Despite everyone else sharing their SDCC photos overnight, I can’t help but post mine now after witnessing the amazing transformation of Harrison Ford into the Hulk. #SDCC2021

“What does it mean to be Red Hulk?” could be a possible paraphrase for Harrison Ford’s question in the given context.

Ford, aged 82, assumes the part of Thaddeus Ross, the mustachioed character previously portrayed by the late William Hurt in “The Incredible Hulk” (2008) and “Captain America: Civil War” (2016). According to Ford, “This role is deeply rooted in history, which Bill brought to life so brilliantly. Yet, now it’s my turn to embody Thaddeus. I’m thrilled about the opportunity and excited to join the Marvel universe. I’ve admired the outstanding performances of numerous actors, some present here tonight, who have enjoyed working within this universe. I too wanted to be part of this captivating experience.”

After long anticipation, DC Studios unveiled the first sneak peek of their new DC Universe during Comic-Con, albeit not directly from the studio itself. Instead, James Gunn shared the trailer for the upcoming animated series, “Creature Commandos,” which left fans in awe. Though the shown footage was merely a taste of what’s to come, the distinctive style and tone present in the clip are unmistakably Gunn’s. Moreover, if this trailer serves as an indicator, comic book enthusiasts can expect an abundance of thrilling experiences in the not-so-distant future. — Paraphrased by me.
