Olympian Maggie Steffens' Sister-in-Law Dies After Traveling to Paris

As a dedicated follower of Maggie Steffen’s athletic career, it is with a heavy heart that I express my deepest condolences to Maggie and her entire family following the tragic loss of her beloved sister-in-law, Lulu Conner. The news of Lulu’s untimely death at the age of 26 while in Paris for the Olympics has left everyone who knew her in shock and grief.

Maggie Steffen’s family is mourning a devastating loss.

I can’t help but feel deeply saddened as I recall the heartbreaking news that Lulu Conner, my beloved sister-in-law of the esteemed U.S. Water Polo team captain, passed away on July 23rd. I confirm this tragic loss to the Associated Press with a heavy heart. At just 26 years old, her vibrant spirit and energy will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Paris, which was supposed to be the backdrop of her sister-in-law’s Olympic journey, became a place of sorrow instead. My thoughts are with the team and their families during this difficult time.

Maggie, who wed Bobby Conner, her brother-in-law, in November, has revealed that she and her loved ones are currently trying to figure out the details, but have labeled it as a “medical crisis.”

Maggie shared with the AP that Lulu’s excitement for the Olympics was contagious: “She’s more than just a friend to me, she’s family. Her radiant energy and ability to bring happiness to those around her is truly remarkable.”

We’ve attempted to contact Maggie’s representative and the U.S. women’s water polo team through TopMob News, but have not received any response as of now.

At the Paris Olympics, where Maggie is competing for the fourth time with hopes of earning her fourth gold medal, she expressed that dedicating herself fully to the competition has provided solace following the unfortunate event.

As the elated 31-year-old athlete, who netted her historic 58th Olympic goal on July 27, making me the all-time leading scorer in women’s Olympic history, I find myself utterly consumed. In this moment, I feel as if I’ve been transported out of my own body, floating above the scene. My mind keeps drifting back to Lulu, her spirit a beacon that guides me. Lulu was an embodiment of dedication and passion, giving her all in every endeavor she pursued. So, I strive to honor her memory by channeling her indomitable spirit within me.

During the July 26 Opening Ceremony, Maggie paid homage to Lulu by tossing a bouquet of flowers into the River Seine from the Team USA boat as a heartfelt gesture.

Maggie confessed to the AP that the coming weeks would be extremely challenging for everyone involved. Her team has been an invaluable source of support during this difficult time. I’ve been going through a tough stretch myself, and so has my husband and his family. It’s a living nightmare, and the shock is still settling in.

“Furthermore, I believe it’s awe-inspiring to sense her presence here. May we strive to make her proud each and every day.”

As Maggie advances in her Olympic quest in 2024, she is fortunate to have a strong network of supporters. Among them is her dedicated coach, Adam Krikorian. Tragically, his brother passed away just before the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Adam advised the AP, “Give her love and encouragement. Bobby and his family need her now more than ever. It’s a challenging moment for them, so allowing her to be present with them seems crucial to me.”
