As a dedicated movie lover with a deep appreciation for intricately woven narratives and complex characters, I can’t help but be captivated by the evolution of Hugh Hammer (Kieran Bew) in House of the Dragon. Although the brutal “Blood and Cheese” scene may have initially grabbed our attention, it is the quiet determination and resilience of this blacksmith-turned-dragonrider that truly stands out.
*Warning: Spoilers ahead for House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7 and the novel Fire & Blood.*
Approaching the finale of House of the Dragon’s second season, I find myself growing increasingly captivated by Kieran Bew’s portrayal of Hugh Hammer. This character has taken on new significance for me as the story unfolds.
Although some viewers were drawn to the violent “Blood and Cheese” moment, Hugh Hammer made his debut in episode 1 and has since gained greater significance.
In the series, Kieran Bew’s character made his debut at King’s Landing, standing before King Aegon Targaryen, played by Tom Glynn-Carney, as a representative for the blacksmiths.
In the latest episode, surprisingly, he declared that he had encountered one of the largest dragons known to exist.
Here’s everything you need to know!
Who is Hugh Hammer in House of the Dragon?
In my recent movie experience, I had the pleasure of following the journey of our protagonist, Hugh Hammer. He’s a talented blacksmith with an unexpected secret – he’s a dragonseed, a Targaryen bastard. The latest episode took an intriguing turn as Hugh boldly claimed the magnificent dragon, Vermithor, for his own.
The first time we encountered Hugh was when he approached King Aegon Targaryen, requesting payment upfront for blacksmiths before they crafted weapons.
Displeased by Otto Hightower’s objections, Aegon made up his mind to approve Hugh’s proposal. He believed it was essential to win over the support of common people for the upcoming conflict.
As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Hugh hasn’t received his payment from Aegon as promised. Moreover, their dissatisfaction with the king might be growing deeper for him and his wife.
In episode 7, after the loss of their daughter, Hugh disregards his wife’s objections and responds to Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen’s (Emma D’Arcy) summons. She is on a quest to identify Targaryen illegitimate offspring for the purpose of training them as dragon riders.
He discloses a Targaryen lineage and, in spite of witnessing many of his competitors mercilessly torched, successfully obtains Vermithor.
I’ve been an avid fan of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series for years, devouring every new detail about Westeros as it was released. With the upcoming premiere of House of the Dragon, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation. While I eagerly anticipate the new stories and characters, I also know that there are major book spoilers lurking around the internet, waiting to be discovered.
Following his victory over Vermithor, Hugh joins the Black faction in the ensuing Battle in the Gullet.
In the future, Hugh receives a knighthood as a recognition. however, during the initial battle of Tumbleton, Hugh and Ulf White, referred to as the Traitors of Two, switch sides and join the Greens.
Later on, Hugh harbors aspirations to claim the throne, but tragically meets his end prior to the Second Battle of Tumbleton at the hands of Ser Jon Roxton.
Who is Hugh Hammer’s dragon in House of the Dragon?
Hugh Hammer claims the dragon Vermithor, the second largest in the world after Vhagar.
Vermithor was previously ridden by Jaehaerys I Targaryen.
Who is actor Kieran Bew?
Fans will readily identify Bew from his appearances on different British TV shows. He made his acting debut on programs such as Spooks, The Bill, and Midsomer Murders.
He continued to feature in the shows “Crusoe,” “Silent Witness,” and “Da Vinci’s Demons,” in addition to making an appearance in the 2017 episode of “Doctor Who” titled “Oxygen.”
Between the years 2017 and 2020, he acted as Ian Davis in the series “Liar.” Prior to appearing in “House of the Dragon,” he portrayed Bill O’Hara in the show “Warrior.”
