SDCC 2024: Bucky Barnes's New Government Role in Thunderbolts* Revealed

As a dedicated fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I am beyond excited about the upcoming “Thunderbolts” project and the opportunity to delve deeper into the lives of some of my favorite characters. Among them is none other than Bucky Barnes, played by the incredibly talented Sebastian Stan.

The specifics about “Thunderbolts” are kept under wraps. This upcoming team-up movie brings together elements of both the Avengers and DC’s Suicide Squad, as it introduces a government-sanctioned squad consisting of diverse characters, from anti-heroes to outright villains. The confirmed cast includes Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell’s US Agent, Hannah-John Kamen’s Ghost, and Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster. These six characters come with varying degrees of exposure to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Pugh’s Yelena has been in just two projects while Stan’s Bucky has graced eight MCU productions.

In “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011), Bucky is initially depicted as a soldier working for the US during World War II. However, his encounter with Hydra results in him transforming into the infamous assassin known as The Winter Soldier, carrying out clandestine operations for the hidden evil force. In “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), Bucky is freed from mind control. He then journeys to Wakanda for recovery and later readjusts to life in the real world in the series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” (2021).

Bucky Barnes Joins Congress in Thunderbolts*

After his atoning efforts in his streaming series, Bucky Barnes is taking on a new government role.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Sebastian Stan and Wyatt Russell from the Thunderbolts team spoke with ComicBook. During an interview, they addressed queries raised by the Hall H audience regarding the footage shown. When asked about Bucky cleaning his vibranium arm in a dishwasher, Stan playfully remarked that it’s an “effective” method.

“At some point, it’s important to ensure things get cleaned, and he’s found an effective way to do so quickly,” Stan quipped. “He also saves a significant amount of water by using less in the dishwasher.”

Russell chimed in briefly after that, sharing something notable.

“He’s a congressman,” Russell responded.

In “Thunderbolts,” it is indicated that Bucky will assume an official government position. This development suits the ex-Winter Soldier well since Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who is set to become President of the US in “Captain America: Brave New World,” is confirmed for this role. By having Bucky, presumably the team leader of “Thunderbolts,” seated in President Ross’s Congress, there will be an additional beneficial connection between them.

Thunderbolts* hits theaters on May 2nd, 2025.
