As a huge fan of noir crime thrillers, I can hardly contain my excitement as I delve into the gritty and complex world of “Blacking Out” by Chip Mosher and Peter Krause. This graphic novel, which has taken three long years to bring to life, promises to transport us into a dark and dangerous landscape filled with intrigue, personal redemption, and a flawed yet empathetic anti-hero named Conrad.
Following a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, Dark Horse Books will release the gritty noir crime thriller “Blacking Out” in stores. This graphic novel is the creation of writer Chip Mosher (“Left On Mission”), artist Peter Krause (“The Power of Shazam!, Irredeemable”), colorist Giulia Brusco (“Scalped, Django Unchained”), and letterer Ed Dukeshire (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers”). “Blacking Out” invites readers into the complex world of former cop Conrad, who is determined to uncover the identity of Karen Littleton’s killer. His investigation leads him to some ominous and perilous locales. ComicBook interviewed Mosher about the three-year process of bringing “Blacking Out” to life, as well as the threats Conrad encounters during his investigation, and a sneak peek into what lies ahead.
3 Years in the Making
Mosher and Krause have been crafting their graphic novel for an impressive three-year span. During this period, the book underwent significant transformations before reaching its current form. As Mosher explained, “Absolutely, Blacking Out underwent considerable growth throughout these three years. With such a long time investment, it’s only natural that both characters and plotlines evolve in surprising ways.”
As a gamer and avid reader, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with Peter Krause on “Blacking Out.” His artwork throughout the book is nothing short of breathtaking, and I can’t help but be in awe of his talent. Working together has been an absolute dream come true. I can’t express enough my admiration for his unique ability to visualize the story and create such a captivating atmosphere.
Mosher praised Peter’s ability to perfectly blend the rough, noir atmosphere of the story with an exceptional understanding and portrayal of the characters. His focus on details and natural storytelling skills were nothing short of extraordinary. Each page he touched brought new discoveries. Peter’s involvement significantly shaped Blacking Out into what it is today.
Meet Conrad
Mosher drew inspiration for the character of Conrad from classic noir anti-heroes, yet strived to create a multi-dimensional figure. He aimed to evoke empathy in readers towards Conrad’s troubled and flawed nature. Mosher explained, “I was inspired by both classic noir anti-heroes and my personal fascination with complex characters yearning for redemption. I wanted to delve into Conrad’s imperfections and the internal conflict between his good intentions and self-destructive tendencies. It was essential to prevent Conrad from becoming a one-dimensional character; he needed to be someone readers could connect with, despite his numerous flaws.”
Conrad is intensely investigating the circumstances surrounding Karen’s death, yet this case offers an invaluable opportunity for him to explore the deeper workings of his own psyche and past experiences. It represents a significant chance for Conrad to make amends and he’s determined not to miss out on this potential turnaround.
During the process of unraveling Karen Littleton’s death, Conrad encounters a journey of self-discovery, confronting his past regrets and mistakes. Interactions with various characters, be they friends or foes, compel him to ponder over his life decisions and the man he has evolved into. This investigation is not merely an opportunity for him to showcase his detective skills; it’s a trial that scrutinizes his moral compass and resolve. The consequences are highly personal for Conrad, and as the enigma unfolds, we witness how deeply his longing for absolution resonates within him. The case takes a significant toll on him, pushing him to his limits both mentally and physically.
Facing the Past
Some of the people Conrad worked with closely at his old department are now among his adversaries, even though the term “allies” doesn’t quite fit. To achieve redemption, Conrad must face his past head-on, and this won’t be a pleasant experience every time.
“During the novel, Conrad’s run-ins with his ex-police companions are particularly gripping. These episodes brim with past history and unresolved animosities. His old friends display a great deal of suspicion at best and open hostility at worst. These confrontations compel Conrad to maneuver through a field of professional grudges and personal betrayals. They serve as an ongoing reminder of his past mistakes and the challenging journey he must undertake if he hopes to achieve any form of forgiveness. These clashes add intricacy to the case, making Conrad’s quest for resolution all the more perilous.”
As a gamer, I can tell you that our journey doesn’t end here, not by a long shot. Mosher hasn’t announced any plans to revisit this game world yet, but he’s got something exciting brewing behind the scenes. “Myself and Peter are brainstorming a fresh concept,” Mosher shared with us. “It’s progressing at the same rate as Blacking Out. It’s another murder mystery, but this time it’ll be even more grisly and terrifying. I can hardly contain my excitement for you all to witness Pete’s masterpiece in action. Trust me, it’s going to blow your minds!”
