As a longtime Marvel fan, I was beyond excited to see how the connection between Red Skull’s car and Iron Man would be explored in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The inclusion of the iconic vehicle in the film’s marketing material sparked my curiosity and fueled my imagination.

In the upcoming film “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Deadpool and Wolverine delivered on their promise of Marvel Universe references. The trailers hinted at nods to the past, present, and future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For instance, they showcased items from the past like Moon Knight’s ice cream truck, and subtly teased future stories such as a potential “Secret Wars.” One intriguing reference was the appearance of Red Skull’s car in early trailers, which was driven by Hugo Weaving’s character Johann Schmidt in “Captain America: The First Avenger.”

Unlike other objects in The Void, Red Skull coupe came with a twist.

In the promotional materials for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the Red Skull’s car is seen with an Iron Man helmet symbol instead of its usual Hydra hood ornament. Additionally, the vehicle sports flaming sides, which is a distinctive feature of Tony Stark’s cars, hinting that this particular coupe is indeed owned by the brilliant, wealthy playboy known as Iron Man.

The significance of this vehicle runs deep. Red Skull’s iconic car being transformed into a replica of Tony Stark’s design and housed in The Void raises the intriguing possibility that in an alternate timeline, Red Skull’s evil persona is assumed by Iron Man. It’s unclear if this means Iron Man takes on the full identity of Red Skull or merely leads Hydra, but either way, it hints at Stark’s susceptibility to taking dark turns.

Last Saturday at Comic-Con in San Diego, Robert Downey Jr., who portrays Iron Man, was announced as taking on the role of Doctor Doom in the upcoming movies “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Directors Joe and Anthony Russo made this revelation, clarifying that Downey will be embodying the Doctor Doom character itself, not a different version of Tony Stark. This might parallel Chris Evans’s role, as he plays both Steve Rogers and Johnny Storm, but these characters are distinct from one another and not variants.

Even if Doom and Stark are not variants, their agendas run parallel.

“New mask, same task,” Downey teased at SDCC.

It’s yet unclear how Marvel Studios will address Downey’s portrayal of Doom and his ties to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nonetheless, Deadpool and Wolverine hinted at the existence of darker aspects of Tony Stark in the expansive multiverse.
