Original I Know What You Did Last Summer Star "Motivated" to Return for Reboot

As a huge fan of the original “I Know What You Did Last Summer” film from 1997, I’m thrilled to hear that a new legacyquel is in the works and that Freddie Prinze Jr., who played one of the lead roles, is motivated to return. I can still remember watching the movie for the first time and being completely hooked by the suspenseful storyline and the chemistry between the characters.

A new version of “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” titled as a “legacyquel,” is in development, promising to create a novel narrative while preserving beloved elements from past installments. Freddie Prinze Jr., the original star, expresses eagerness to join the project but nothing is finalized yet. Previous statements from Prinze were less definitive regarding his involvement, with this latest comment hinting at a potential confirmation. The actor emphasizes the need for synchronization of shooting schedules as a significant consideration.

In my excitement as a fan, I shared with Us Weekly that nothing is set in stone until the contract is signed. However, I’m actively engaging in discussions with them. If we can align our schedules and make things work for both parties, we’ll certainly give it a try. But ensuring everyone’s availability is crucial to making this potential collaboration successful.

He added, “It’s important that everyone is satisfied with the script. I have a great deal of respect for Jen Robinson, both as a director and as an individual. I believe she represents the next generation of talent in this industry. Therefore, there are many reasons why I’m excited to work on this film.”

In keeping with a legacy sequel’s tradition, the upcoming movie aims to reintroduce beloved characters from the past. Meanwhile, potential new additions to the cast include Camila Mendes (“Riverdale”), Madelyn Cline (“Outer Banks”), Tyriq Withers (“Atlanta”), Jonah Hauer-King (“The Little Mermaid”), and Sarah Pidgeon, who has earned a Tony Award nomination.

The actor admitted, “I’m driven, and I believe everyone else is as well. We’re all putting in effort to succeed. Fingers crossed that we will.”

Last May, I too felt a mix of excitement and apprehension when Jennifer Love Hewitt, my on-screen partner, voiced her optimistic yet anxious feelings about our upcoming project.

Hewitt spoke with Entertainment Tonight, sharing his proposed title for the project: “I’ll Never Forget What You Did That Summer“. The production is underway, he confirmed. “I’ve had some initial conversations,” he added. People have been messaging him excitedly about the project, but Hewitt cautioned that the train of progress is moving quickly and he hasn’t reached his destination yet. It’s exhilarating to consider the possibility, and if it materializes, Hewitt can only imagine feeling both overwhelmed and thankful.

Regarding her apprehensions about bringing back Julie’s character, Hewitt expressed, “I was genuinely frightened as it’s been 26 years since we last saw her on screen.” She further shared, “Age brings power and experience. I’ve had three children, which gives me a newfound confidence. However, the vulnerability that Julie James once embodied no longer applies to this version of her character. I’m eager to portray an older and wiser Julie.”

The new I Know What You Did Last Summer is set to hit theaters on July 18, 2025.
