As a longtime fan of Disney Channel, I have always been fascinated by the lives and careers of its former child stars. Their stories are filled with triumphs, struggles, and transformations that mirror my own journey as a young person growing up in front of the screen.
During the early 2000s, it was uncovered that things were not as they appeared for Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus. (Or, Discoveries revealed that Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus’ appearances during the early 2000s were misleading.)
1. Over the years, former Disney Channel stars have run into each other quite frequently, but it is said that they never appeared together in the 2009 show “Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana.”
Although the combined gathering featured actors from “Wizards of Waverly Place”, “Hannah Montana”, and “The Suite Life on Deck”, it’s worth noting that Selena’s character, Alex Russo, and Miley’s Hannah Montana never appeared together in any scenes. Jennifer Stone, a former cast member of “Wizards of Waverly Place”, has shared insights as to why this was the case.
Jennifer shared during the July 29 episode of her podcast, “Wizards of Waverly Place,” that they occasionally got along. She reminded listeners that both individuals had previously dated Nick Jonas when the show was being filmed. Essentially, their relationship was akin to typical high school dynamics.
While her co-host David DeLuise has no memory of any drama on set, Jennifer remembers all of it.
She mentioned that Miley Cyrus was the one who initially dated him, followed by Selena Gomez, and their relationship became a complicated mess typical of high school romances. I understand they didn’t always see eye to eye on things.
Luckily, Miley and Selena were able to put the past behind them.
“They’re fine now,” Jennifer added. “But, yeah, it was high school just BS.”
David feels compassionately towards Miley and Selena, regretting that being teenagers for them meant living under intense public scrutiny.
It seems Jennifer pointed out that when you reflect on the past, it often feels as if you can’t recall what exactly caused the upheaval.
Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez have a common ex-boyfriend in Nick Jonas. From 2006 to 2007, Miley was romantically involved with Nick, while Selena had a brief fling with him in 2008.
To demonstrate that they harbor no animosity towards one another, the celebrities have consistently shown their support for each other since then. In August 2023, Selena swiftly put an end to any rumors of a feud as they both dropped new music on the same day.
Miley Cyrus and I will both be releasing our new singles on the same day, August 25th. We’ve been friends for a long time, ever since we were young. Can’t wait! (Written on her Instagram Story, Aug. 18)
31-year-old Miley has been dating her partner Maxx Morando since November 2021, in terms of their romantic relationships.
I can’t help but gush over how fortunate I feel to be working with the incredible Benny Blanco, who I now refer to as the love of my life. Our collaboration started back in December, and ever since then, my admiration for him has only grown stronger.
Wondering where your beloved Disney Channel stars have ended up since their fame? Stick around for the update!
Following his success as the charming Ethan Craft in Hilary Duff’s comedy series, Clayton Snyder temporarily stepped away from acting to complete high school and attend Pepperdine University. There, he participated in water polo. Although he appeared in an episode of NCIS in 2014, his primary focus now lies in his real estate career. However, when the topic arises, he doesn’t hesitate to reminisce about his days as a child actor. As he shared with TopMob News, “Occasionally, clients discover my past as a child star during property showings. Yet, this often sparks joy rather than awkwardness because it’s not the reason they’re working with me. It’s satisfying to enjoy their surprise while still relying on the quality of our professional work.”
Following his popular portrayal of David “Gordo” Gordon, Lizzie’s BFF-turned-boyfriend, on the cherished sitcom, Adam Lamberg secured roles in films titled “When Do We Dine?” and “The Beautiful Loser“. As indicated on his LinkedIn profile, he completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography at UC Berkeley and went on to pursue a Master of Public Administration from Baruch College. Initially, he was slated to reappear in the Lizzie McGuire reboot; however, he has since stepped away from acting.
When Lalaine‘s character Miranda Sanchez disappeared from the final six episodes of Lizzie McGuire (as well as the 2003 movie) due to her filming schedule on Disney Channel Original Movie You Wish!, her career sort of disappeared as well.
An attempt at a music career never really went anywhere, while a 2007 reprisal of her role in a Lizzie McGuire sequel series What’s Stevie Thinking? (centered on Miranda’s younger sister) never went beyond the pilot stage. That same year, she was arrested and charged with felony possession of meth. After completing court mandated rehab, the charge was expunged from her record.
Despite a cameo in 2010’s Easy A, she’s more easily found on Instagram than either big or small screen. She did have a film, Definition Please, release in 2020.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: After six and a half years playing the lovable little brother Matt on Lizzie McGuire, I, Jake Thomas, didn’t miss a beat in my acting career. I moved on to Disney’s Cory in the House and later graced the screens of hit shows like ER, House, Criminal Minds, NCIS, and S.W.A.T., as a guest star. In 2013 to 2014, you could find me costarring alongside YouTuber sensation Joey Graceffa in his web series Storytellers. Fast forward to 2018, I proudly graduated from Cal State University, Northridge with a Bachelor’s degree in Screenwriting and a minor in Japanese Language. On my Instagram, you’ll find a blend of my latest photography adventures and nostalgic throwbacks to my days as a child actor.
Camilla Belle secured her initial leading part in the 2000 DCOM “Rip Girls.” Following this role, she paused her acting career for a while before appearing in the 2006 remake of “When a Stranger Calls” and the successful film “10,000 BC” in 2008.
After finishing his tenure as Max Russo on “Wizards of Waverly Place” in 2012, Jake T. Austin swiftly moved on to a leading role on ABC Family’s (now Freeform) “The Fosters.” He portrayed Jesus Foster for the initial two seasons before exiting and being succeeded by Noah Centineo. Following that, he participated in season 23 of “Dancing With the Stars,” becoming the first eliminee. Additionally, Austin provided voice-overs for 2017’s “The Emoji Movie” and 2020’s thriller “Adverse,” featuring Mickey Rourke. He is scheduled to resume his role in the upcoming “Wizards” sequel.
In the interim, David Henrie, who portrayed Justin Russo, the eldest sibling, has experienced a distinct path since the show concluded in 2012. Unlike his castmates, he wasn’t part of the follow-up film “The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex.” Nonetheless, he featured in films like “Grown Ups 2” and “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2.”
Following her role as Harper Finkle, Alex Russo’s best friend, in the series “The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex“, actress Jennifer Stone appeared in a Lifetime thriller called “High School Possession” in 2014 and portrayed the Babysitter in Nickelodeon’s series “Deadtime Stories“. In the year 2013, she was diagnosed with a type of diabetes known as latent autoimmune diabetes in adults, commonly referred to as Type 1.5 diabetes. Her film “The In-Between” aimed to raise awareness about this condition.
I can’t believe how time flies! When I was just a kid, I remember watching Mia Talerico on “Good Luck Charlie” back in 2010, and now she’s all grown up, turning sweet 15! It’s amazing to think that at only 10 months old, she was already cast for the role of Charlie Duncan. And since then, she’s continued to make strides in her acting career, landing a role on Brat’s kids show “Mani,” and even starting her own YouTube channel where she does “unboxing” and toy reviews. It just goes to show that with determination and talent, there are no limits to what one can achieve, no matter how young! Impressive, isn’t it?
While Teddy Duncan, Charlie’s older brother, took on a more mature part in TV shows after “Good Luck Charlie,” Bridgit Mendler stepped into this role when she joined the second season of NBC comedy “Undateable” in 2015. She acted in two seasons before its cancellation, and since then, she has made appearances in “Nashville” and the Netflix film “Father of the Year,” as well as a Netflix series titled “Merry Happy Whatever,” featuring Dennis Quaid and Ashley Tisdale.
Since the final installment of “The Cheetah Girls” franchise in 2008, Adrienne’s former bandmate and co-star Kiely Williams has followed a more low-key path. While Raven-Symone and Adriene Bailon-Houghton have continued to shine in acting roles and hosting gigs, Kiely appeared in films like “The House Bunny” (2008), “Elle: A Modern Cinderella Tale” (2010), “Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming” (2010), and “Holla II” (2013). She also tied the knot with Brandon “BJ” Cox in December 2016, with Sabrina Bryan serving as bridesmaid. In 2017, Kiely made a brief comeback to the spotlight when she competed on an episode of “Celebrity Family Feud,” representing the Girl Group team alongside Sabrina.
Following the airing of “Cheetah Girls: One World” in 2008, Sabrina Bryan took on a role as a correspondent for TopMob News during the eighth season of “Dancing With the Stars” in 2009 – three seasons after she had participated and was eliminated in sixth place. She reappeared on the show as an All Star during season 15 in 2012, even though she received perfect scores, she was again eliminated in sixth position, exactly five years after her initial elimination.
1999 saw me starring in the timeless DCOM “Smart House,” which propelled me to a regular presence on the network. This was followed by roles in “The Luck of the Irish” (2001) and “A Ring of Endless Light” (2002). Subsequently, I delved into more mature content, appearing in horror movies like “Halloween: Resurrection,” “The Ring Two,” and “Final Destination 3.” In 2010, I landed a recurring role as Ian Thomas on “Pretty Little Liars,” featuring in 16 episodes between 2010 and 2014. I also had a supporting part in the 2013 Jackie Robinson biopic “42.” My career continues to thrive, albeit recently focusing more on independent projects.
Between the years 1999 and 2004, Kirsten Storms graced Disney Channel with her presence, featuring in the “Zenon” trilogy, “Johnny Tsunami,” and lending her voice to “Kim Possible.” During this period, she also started her journey towards a more mature acting career by joining NBC’s “Days of Our Lives” for a four-year run starting in 2000. After an attempt at primetime TV with the CBS baseball drama “Clubhouse” in 2004, she returned to soaps and became Maxie Jones on ABC’s “General Hospital,” appearing in over 1,100 episodes from 2005 to 2023. In 2011, Storms experimented with reality TV by starring in the brief series “Dirty Soap” on TopMob. In June 2013, she and her former “GH” co-star Brandon Barash secretly got married, and their daughter Harper Rose Barash was born on January 7, 2014. However, they filed for divorce in April 2016 due to irreconcilable differences.
1998 marked the time when Erik von Dette won over audiences everywhere, shining as the lead of one of the pioneering Disney Channel Original Movies (DCOMs), titled “Brink!“. Following this, he was seen in various roles including voice acting for Recess, portraying John Bryant in The Princess Diaries, and starring on the supernatural Disney Channel series So Weird from 1999 to 2001. He also ventured into reality TV, competing in the first celebrity edition of ABC’s show “The Mole“, as well as appearing in brief-lived shows such as Dinotopia and Complete Savages. His latest work includes reprising his role as Sid in Toy Story 3, a character he’d initially played in the Pixar franchise’s debut in 1995.
From 2004 to 2006, Raviv Ullman played the lead role in “Phil of the Future.” Following this, he moved towards more mature roles, appearing in shows like “Big Love” and “House,” using his real name for the first time in a “House” episode in 2006. He then landed a series regular role on Lifetime comedy “Rita Rocks” from 2008 to 2009. His subsequent TV appearances include an episode of “Broad City” in 2015 and a recurring role in the web series “Strangers” in 2018.
1999 saw the rise of Kimberly J. Brown as she took on the role of young witch Marnie Piper in the beloved DCOM “Halloweentown,” opposite the legendary Debbie Reynolds. The film’s success led to three sequels, but an unusual decision was made by the network in 2006’s “Return to Halloweentown,” replacing Brown with Sara Paxton. This choice is often cited as the reason for the fourth film being less popular among fans.
From 2006 to 2011, Mitchel Musso starred as Oliver Oken, one of Miley Stewart’s (Miley Cyrus) BFFs on Hannah Montana. As the show was winding down, he had a promising career going for him on Disney, landing a lead role on new series Pair of Kings, as well as a gig hosting PrankStars. But when he was pulled over on October 17, 2011 and charged with a DUI suspicion while underage—he was 20 at the time—he was written out of Pair of Kings and his prank show was canceled. After that, he worked on on indie films and voice work in Milo Murphy’s Law, a Disney XD series.
In 2023, he was arrested for public intoxication and theft in Texas.
Jason Earles, who portrayed Miley Cyrus’ older brother Jackson Stewart on “Hannah Montana” at the age of 10th grader in the first season, was in fact 29 when the show premiered and 34 by its conclusion. Following this, he started appearing in Disney XD comedy “Kickin’ It,” where he played Rudy for four seasons until it ended in March 2015. Since 2018, Earles has been starring in Brat series “Hotel Du Loone,” which is available on YouTube. Additionally, he joined the third season of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.” In August 2017, Earles tied the knot with his girlfriend Katie Drysen.
After playing the role of younger brother Cory Baxter on “That’s So Raven” from 2003 to 2007, Kyle Massey went on to star in his own spinoff show, “Cory in the House,” which aired until 2008. Later, he made recurring appearances on “The Electric Company,” guest-starred on “Gotham” and “Being Mary Jane,” lent his voice to “Fish Hooks,” “Mighty Magiswords,” and “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” and competed on season 11 of “Dancing With the Stars” and in a 2017 episode of “Celebrity Family Feud” against Jennie Garth.
From 2000 to 2003, A.J. Trauth acted in “Even Stevens” as Twitty and contributed voiceovers for “Kim Possible” as Josh Mankey. Afterward, he made numerous guest appearances on shows like “7th Heaven,” “House,” “Ghost Whisperer,” “CSI,” and “Bones,” until 2012. Since then, he has acted in a few independent films and lent his voice for video games “Wolfenstein: The New Order” (2014) and its sequel “Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus” (2017). In February 2014, A.J. got engaged to actress Leah Pipes, whom he had been dating for nearly three years. They married that December but later separated by 2019.
After acting as Ren Stevens in “Even Stevens” for three consecutive years, bringing Kim Possible to life, and sharing the screen with Hilary Duff in the 2002 DCOM “Cadet Kelly,” Christy Carlson Romano shifted her focus to Broadway in 2004. She starred as Belle in Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” for a 31-week run, and returned to Broadway in 2008, becoming part of “Avenue Q.” In 2007, she authored a novel titled “Grace’s Turn,” directed a movie called “Christmas All Over Again” in 2016, and earned her Film Studies degree from Barnard College. Christy married writer-producer Brendan Rooney on New Year’s Eve in 2013, and they have two daughters, with the youngest being born in February 2019.
1999 marked Brandon Baker’s first appearance in a DCOM (Disney Channel Original Movie) where he played the lead role in the movie titled “Johnny Tsunami”. Following this film, his appearances were sporadic, including guest roles on shows like “Even Stevens” and more mature-themed series such as “Boston Public” and “The Unit”, all while he was studying at UC Santa Barbara.
2001 saw Alana Austin taking the lead role in the Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM), titled “Motocrossed“. In this film, she portrayed Andrea “Andi” Carson, a teenage girl who was forbidden from participating in motocross despite her passion. When her twin brother got injured before a major race, she secretly took his place to continue racing.
Post the movie’s release, she made appearances as a guest star on shows like “7th Heaven, Boston Public“, and “Cold Case“. However, she decided to leave acting in 2006 altogether. It was reported that she studied medicine at USC. When asked about her current activities on Twitter in April 2016 by a fan, she mentioned that she was focusing on writing. She also shared that acting remained close to her heart.
Following her consistent appearance in “Phil of the Future” on Disney Channel, Kay Panabaker gained popularity. She continued to shine in Disney Channel Original Movies like “Life is Ruff” and “Read It and Weep,” sharing the limelight with her elder sister Danielle Panabaker. In 2006, they both participated in the inaugural Disney Channel Games. Subsequently, Kay moved on to more mature roles in the 2009 remake of “Fame” and the 2011 ABC series “No Ordinary Family.” By 2012, she had decided to leave acting behind. Instead, she pursued a new path by studying zoology at UCLA and, as of 2016, was employed as an animal caretaker at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
